Windows 10 strikes again, now problems on Lenovo laptops

Last week, Microsoft released an apparently harmless Windows 10 update to try to fix a security vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Microsoft has now acknowledged that the new update is causing headaches for some Lenovo laptop users.

Windows 10 update wreaks havoc on Lenovo laptops

The main problem is that some Lenovo notebook PCs with less than 8GB of RAM are unable to start after installing update KB44832229. It's quite puzzling how an update that should simply patch Internet Explorer could cause the entire operating system to fail to boot. However, we are no longer surprised after what we have seen in recent months.

Microsoft promises that a suitable solution will come soon, but in the meantime it offers a solution that will allow owners of affected computers to be able to use them again. To fix the problem, users must enter the UEFI menu with a vendor-specific key combo at startup, and disable secure startup. It's pretty easy until you get to the part where users will need to enter their BitLocker recovery key if the drive is encrypted. OEMs sometimes apply BitLocker encryption by default, and users may not have the key in the first place.

Microsoft is already coming in for criticism for its terrible update history, and while this incident only affects a certain subset of users, it isn't doing it any favors. If anything, it shows how even an apparently unrelated update could have dire consequences. Added to this is that the updates are literally forced for the users, the affected users will only find out about the problem very late after the update has already been installed.

Microsoft should certainly improve the quality control of its updates.
