Two days ago Microsoft released update KB4512941, after just a day of testing on the Release Preview Ring. At the time, the update had no known issues, but it appears that it was simply because Microsoft didn't search hard enough.

A last update of Windows 10 generates a high CPU consumption

Several users complain about high CPU usage by the SearchUI.exe service, part of Cortana, through FeedbackHub and Reddit (1, 2).

Users complain that SearchUI.exe takes up almost 30-40% of CPU usage.

"After installing KB4512941 (Build 18362.329) the popup with search results remains blank, SearchUI.exe is constantly using the CPU and ~ 200MB of memory, " one user documented the problem in the Microsoft Feedback Hub.

“Cortana has been running consistently above 35% CPU usage and 150MB of memory, as reported by Task Manager, for at least a day. Despite this, when using the Search button next to the Start menu, a dialog box appears that will not display any item when entering a search query, even after waiting several minutes, " another user complained about CPU usage in Feedback Hub.

More worryingly, it appears that the Windows Insider testers had already reported the problem in the Feedback Center, but that Microsoft did not respond to this.

If you are one of those affected by this problem, the easiest solution is to uninstall this update.

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings. Click on "Update and Security." On the Update and Security screen, click on the option "View update history." On the next screen, we are going to "Uninstall updates." Select the update (KB4512941) and click the "Uninstall" button.

At the time of writing this article, "Microsoft is not aware of any problems with this update . " You are warned.
