Xiaomi Mi Notebook is the new creation of the recently released family of laptops from the famous Chinese brand. This notebook presents more than remarkable credentials in terms of hardware, but a more than attractive price. With a slim design, low weight, and a large screen and keyboard, it makes a great choice for a work laptop and perhaps eventual gaming use. We must not forget that we have a dedicated graphics card. Let's discover together what cards this Xiaomi Mi notebook keeps in this complete analysis.

As always, thank the guys at InfoFreak for the trust placed in Professional review by giving us this product for analysis.

Xiaomi Mi Notebook technical characteristics

The equipment in question comes in a neutral colored cardboard box with the drawing diagram of the laptop on its upper side. The weight of the package is 3.37 Kg, so we are dealing with a very light and manageable package since its dimensions are 40 cm x 27 cm x 5 cm.

Once we open the box, we find the Xiaomi Mi notebook located in the central position in the box protected on its periphery by high-density white plastic cork and located in an elevated position on the floor of the box and also separated from the back. higher. This will allow that in case of blows or sinking it does not affect the final product. next to this we find the documentation.

In turn we find the product wrapped in a translucent plastic bag to protect it from dust and a protector between the keyboard and the screen. Nothing to object to in terms of product protection, although perhaps a cork on top would not hurt.

At the back of the box we find another closed cardboard box where the fixed electrical power supplies are stored. We must take into account an important aspect and that is that the plug is not compatible with the European standard, so it will be necessary to purchase a separate adapter. In total we will have the following components:

  • Xiaomi Mi Notebook Notebook Australian Configuration Fixed Cable Power Charger Documentation and Instructions

Xiaomi Mi Notebook has a 15.6-inch screen capable of displaying a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz. To build it, we have a 142 ppi IPS panel and a brightness of 250 nits. The screen format is 16: 9, capable of providing a viewing angle of 178o. In addition, the maximum opening that the screen supports is 135 o

In the section on the bleeding effect, it is not too pronounced, but it appears on the lower sides of the screen, especially when we have the maximum brightness. This causes a lower depth of the dark tones, especially if we pay attention to the judgable section.

The performance of the screen in general terms is quite good, with this FullHD and 60Hz resolution it will allow us to spend many hours in front of it if the view suffers in excess.

The frames that surround the screen and that is responsible for holding the IPS panel are of an important size. In addition, they are quite visible and with a plastic finish more typical of entry-level equipment. In this aspect, the design could be more careful without a doubt

In the construction of the Xiaomi Mi notebook, the plastic elements predominate inside, since both the keyboard area and its base are made of this material in matt black.

For the upper part of the cover we can find a gray aluminum coating, the best aspect is the exterior of this equipment.

Both the front and the back are completely smooth with well-worked edges, both the plastic area of the base and the aluminum area of the screen.

The measurements recorded by this laptop are 382 mm long by 253.5 wide and 19.9 mm thick, we are talking about an ultrabook. Its total weight is 2.18 Kg so, despite its measurements, it is a fairly light team.

In the connectivity section, this Xiaomi Mi notebook has two USB 3.0, a USB 2.0, an HDMI port, the 3.5-inch audio jack connector. Perhaps it is not too much, especially considering that it is a team of loose dimensions.

We also have an SD card reader for SD, SDHC, SDXD types and an RJ45 Ethernet port, which is appreciated, especially considering the reduced thickness of the equipment. It is an excellent option to play online without using the wireless network.

If we want to use wireless connectivity we will also have Miracast for wireless displays, Bluetooth 4.1 and of course Wifi with the 802.11ac standard.

Xiaomi Mi notebook has a fairly wide keyboard, although it must be said that it comes with an English configuration. Nothing particularly serious if we install the language pack to change the keyboard configuration to the one we want. With the measurements it registers, it has been possible to enter a numeric keyboard located on its right side. We will then have a configuration similar to that of a desktop keyboard.

The touch of the keys is quite pleasant, with a very quiet CHICLE mechanism and with large keys that allow fast typing. Perhaps for those who use the view a lot to find the keys, the English configuration misleads them, otherwise it is not a big problem.

When it comes to gaming, we do notice that the controls are upgradeable compared to gaming keyboards, even so, it is also not designed for this purpose and is understandable. What we do miss, is a backlight of the keys for dark situations. And a larger Enter and Delete button, to personal taste.

In the row of keys F we have the typical functions of brightness, volume and lock of the touchpad. But we can also use cutouts, open the window browser and open the menu to project on multiple screens. The most interesting button in this regard is undoubtedly the one that opens the window browser.

In the numerical keyboard we also find a direct access to the calculator, and to the default browser that we have, this being quite useful.

The touchpad is very wide, and allows a quick movement of the fingers. As for tactile clicks, it responds very well and without the need for any pressure. In addition, this Xiaomi Mi Notebook allows different configurations of gestures using the Microsoft PTP clickpad technology, we can use the pinch to zoom, swipe with two and three fingers to minimize sales and open the Windows window browser. They are few gestures, but useful and easy to make and memorize.

The only aspect that we can improve on the touchpad is that it has enough oscillation in the area of the buttons, so when you click on the touch pad you will notice a slight noise and sag.

Xiaomi Mi Notebook has two 3W speakers with Dolby sound. Its performance is excellent in this regard, and the equipment sounds great both on music tracks, movies and games.

On the upper front of the screen we will have a 1 Megapixel webcam with a 1280 x 720 resolution with the ability to take photos and videos with sound. Perhaps we miss a higher resolution of the camera since the quality of the photos and video is quite improvable, although for the use of video calls it is correct.

We highlight the sensitivity of the microphone, which is located next to the camera. We have been able to verify that it reaches quite distant sounds without introducing noise into the channel.

Hardware and internal quality

From this Xiaomi Mi Notebook we can expect high performance, since it mounts an Intel Core i5-8250U with 4 cores and 8 threads of 8 or generation capable of working at a maximum frequency of 3.40 GHz and a basic frequency of 1.6 GHz. It has 6 MB of L3 cache memory and supports up to 32 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM.

The architecture that it implements is the Kaby Lake of 14 nm, and its TDP at maximum power is 15W. It is not a high consumption, since we are talking about a 4-core CPU with 8 processing threads.

In this equipment we will have 8GB of DDR4 RAM at 2400 MHz installed in a single module. But we have the possibility of expanding this together with another module equal or superior in capacity. Or even remove this module to put a 16 GB

The total capacity with which this CPU can work is with 32 GB DDR4 at 2400 MHz. An amount more than enough not only for a laptop but for practically any domestic equipment.

The graphics chip that this Xiaomi Mi Notebook mounts is an Nvidia MX110 that works at a base frequency of 978 MHz, and can reach up to 993 MHz in boost mode. In the memory section, this Nvidia has 2 GB GDDR5 at 1253 MHz with a 64-bit interface. Physically it is mounted in a PCI-E x4 slot and is capable of supporting DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4.

Along with this hardware, we will have two hard drives, a 128 GB SSD connected to an M.2 port with a SATA 3 controller and another 2.5-inch mechanical HDD with a capacity of 1 TB, also connected to an interface SATA 3.

Of course we miss a solid drive with higher performance in such a team. We think an M.2 connection with a PCI controller would have been the right thing to do, although these units are significantly more expensive. As a positive aspect we highlight the possibility of exchanging both units for extensions and we also appreciate of course having a massive 1TB storage unit.

We consider it important to make a subsection regarding the operating system that this Xiaomi Mi Notebook brings. It is Windows Home x64 in perfect Chinese, something that being Spanish we do not value too much, to say the least. If we add to this that we have tried to install the language pack with little success (we only managed to put it partially in Spanish) we are talking about the need for formatting, either by the store or by us. The license that this equipment has activates Windows Home x64, so if we format we will need to install this version if we do not want to acquire a new license.

Battery durability tests

Xiaomi Mi Notebook has a 3-cell, 2600mAh N15B01W model Li-ion battery. Its power is 40Wh and it promises a duration of 5.5 hours with video playback and 6 hours with web browsing. Let's see if the results match our experience.

In the tests carried out, we have given the equipment different uses, with the aim of determining the battery life times in different cases of use. The results have been the following:

  • The duration of approximately 5 hours browsing and downloading through the wireless connection. In the games section the team has had an autonomy of approximately 2 hours, but with the screen brightness half.

We must emphasize that it is possible to remove the cover that covers the hardware without too many complications. Always be careful with jerks to make sure not to break the plastic cover. Removing this cover reveals all the components, so the installation and uninstallation of them is quite simple.

Thermal performance tests

For the Xiaomi Mi notebook we have a double fan cooling system on both sides of the computer. These fans take cold air through a wide grille on the floor that is protected by a dust filter.

Air is expelled through two vents located on the front of the equipment located on the left and on the right. The two ventilation systems are connected by copper tubes to collect the heat from the components and distribute it to both sides.

Due to the design and construction of the chassis, the expelled air collides with the axis of the screen and rises towards it, heating it. In the thermal photo we can see how the heat flow greatly affects the bottom of the screen.

The results of the thermal analysis after 80 minutes with Aida 65 engineer stressing the equipment's processing components were as follows:

Maximum temperature of 59.6 o C at the bottom in contact with the ground. We can see that the heat is concentrated in the area of the air absorption grids where the dissipation elements are located.

Regarding the upper part, we see that in the keyboard area there is a uniform temperature of 40.8 o C, finding the maximum values in the ventilation areas with almost 50 o C. In turn we see that the heat is distributed in the Side areas of the screen and perhaps this is the most negative aspect of your cooling system.

We must bear in mind that the equipment has been subjected to a maximum stress process in constant time, so that in normal performance this temperature is significantly lower. During the tests working with him it must be said that he has hardly warmed up.

Performance and storage tests

The first test that this Xiaomi Mi Notebook has been subjected to is the testing of its CPU. As we see, it presents a great performance, being the Intel i7-4770K and i7-3770, making it a team with very good features for normal office use, virtualization or multimedia.

The next test we have submitted this Xiaomi Mi Notebook is to measure the speed of its SSD. For this we have used the CristalDiskMark software in its latest version. We see that the results are those promised by the manufacturer.

As for the mechanical hard drive, it is not worth showing the results. We are well aware of the performance of such a hard drive. The most important thing about them is that they serve to store everything.

Now we go to see the performance of the team with some of the most demanding games. To do this, we have configured the graphic properties to obtain adequate performance for the player. The benchmarking tool used has been FRAPS for 180 seconds with three attempts. For the result we have obtained the mean. For games that have performance tests, we have used these tests.

In 1920 x 1080 resolution we have not published the results because they are unimportant seeing performance at a lower resolution.

First of all, we must bear in mind that it is not a computer designed for gaming, and the games tested are highly demanding. So it will be possible to use it sporadically for demanding games at medium or low graphics and online games of less graphically demanding games.

Final words and conclusion about Xiaomi Mi Notebook

Xiaomi Mi Notebook is in general a good team, we will have a very good performance for its general and sporadic use for games and a very good autonomy. We must not forget that it mounts a 4-core i5 processor and dedicated graphics, despite its low price.

Our usability experience has also been satisfactory. It is a team of extensive measurements with a good screen and at the same time very thin (2 cm) so its transport and handling will be good.

Another very positive aspect is the possibilities of hardware expansion. We can replace or expand hard drives, batteries, RAM and other components. So they make it a customizable team.

We recommend reading the best laptops on the market

As for the negative aspects that we must take into account, of course the operating system. From the factory we have a Chinese version, so we will have to reinstall a version of Windows Home in Spanish to have the language pack properly implemented. The positive is that for the Home version we will have an activation key in the BIOS.

The keyboard, for our part we have had no problems adapting to it, knowing where the characters are with a European configuration there should be no problems. Although if you are one of those who must look at the keys to write, you may have a problem.

Currently the 8 GB version of RAM is available for an approximate price of 735 euros at InfoFreak, that is, we will have a two-year warranty and technical support directly from them, so we forgot about China. On the other hand, the 4 GB version is found for 659 euros in this same store.

We can say that it is an economic equipment and with good benefits for the day to day, and take a few games from time to time, we will also have it directly in Spanish and with a guarantee in Spain. In China we find it a little cheaper, in case you don't mind having a guarantee.
