Unboxing and design

Xiaomi gives us a simple presentation in a white box, on the side we have some screen-printed letters indicating that it is the "5S" version . In the back area we find a sticker with the IMEI numbers and the serial number of the smartphone.

Once we open the box we find:

The plastic structure of the Xiaomi Mi5 has been replaced by metal at the rear with bevelled edges. Regardless of its specs, the new design is undoubtedly much nicer and cools much better than the old one.

From our point of view you should not envy anything at all to the main high-end of the market, which came with a much higher price and offering worse features. Among its dimensions we find 70.3 x 145.6 x 8.3 mm and a weight of 145 grams.

Currently we can buy 4 models: gold, gray, gold / pink and ours: white. It reminds us of the front much of the ceramic white of the One Plus X.

On the right side we have the volume controls and the power button. While in the left area the card holder for a double nanoSIM card.

The audio jack is located on the top with its classic 3.5 mini jack output.

The Xiaomi Mi5S equips a screen with IPS LCD technology with a size of 5.15 ″ and a 1080p resolution together with a density of 428 pixels and offering a respectable 70% of usable screen area.

Is a Full HD resolution sufficient for the size of this screen? As of today, we believe that it is one of the best solutions that can offer terminals between 5 and 5.2 ″ … It looks really good and the battery consumption is much less than in 1440p or 4K resolutions.

Color quality is another highlight, with well-calibrated contrast and the ability to deliver fantastic maximum brightness. We don't face any problems using it directly in places with sunlight, which is a very important issue. To close the set, the protection glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which guarantees good protection against scratches and chafing.

Powerful hardware

Although there are a couple of more powerful versions, the most balanced is possibly our Xiaomi Mi5S, with Snapdragon 821 chip with 4 Dual Kryo cores running at 2.15 GHz and 1.6 GHz respectively. Along with this great power we have 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 530 graphics card at a speed of 624 MHz that will run any current game.

We have run several games and applications daily and as expected we were very comfortable with it. Miui 8 is super fluid, but we hardly notice a difference from the normal Xiaomi Mi5 that we have.

Storage and operating system

Although its default storage is 64GB and it is more than enough for 95% of the world's mortals. It cannot be expanded using a microSD card… so we have to be very clear about which model to choose. For our uses this size exceeds!

Announced worldwide prior to the launch of Miui 8, the Xiaomi Mi5s comes with Android 6.0.1 out of the box. Xiaomi has not yet guaranteed the exit of an International ROM, so if we want to have the terminal always updated we must choose the Chinese / American or, failing that, download the roms from Xiaomi EU to the official exit of the Global ROM.

In order to use the Xiaomi EU roms we must unlock the bootlader and through TWRP manually update this ROM. We have done it and surely we will launch a guide on how to do it.

It is not the first time that we tried Miui, but we have seen a great improvement since Miui 7 … the system goes much faster, the box system remains the same but the customization is very extensive. What do you not like Miui? Don't worry, you can install the Google / Nova Launcher launcher and turn your terminal into a Nexus or the new Google Pixel.

Connectivity

The camera has improved a bit compared to the normal version. Saturation and color fidelity are really good. We are very happy with this new terminal.

Some of you may be wondering: Is it really worth changing if I have the Xiaomi Mi5? We have the 3 / 32GB version and honestly not. They go exactly the same and it is not yet known if this new version will have a Global ROM… but it is nothing serious, since the boys from Xiaomi EU have their weekly roms. Therefore, we can be calm about the latest updates. Of course, we will have to do it manually or have the Chinese / English ROM.

On Miui 8 it goes very fast and once you get used to it… you don't know whether to go back to another interface. Although personally, the Google Launcher I like something more.
