It cannot be denied that Xiaomi has been hitting hard for years. With the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, it puts the other mid-range models back on the ropes. The company continues to focus on offering quality features and components as well as an affordable price. For no other reason have they gotten to where they are now. An evolution for the better has been noted. Let's see how they have been given.

First of all, we thank Gearbest for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Features Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

Unboxing

Xiaomi has us used to small and minimalist boxes. In this particular case, the name of the model can be seen on an orange background. By disengaging the top cover, we find:

  • Xiaomi Redmi Plus 5 Protective Case. Power Adapter. USB Charging Cable. SIM Tray Extractor. Quick Manual.

Same style, different dimensions

For Xiaomi, if something works well, better not to change it. Therefore, the company has maintained the style of the previous model only by modifying looks that are trending today. The aluminum body is maintained and curves at corners and edges are accentuated. Measurements are adapted due to 18: 9 screen ratio. So we are talking about dimensions of 75.5 x 158.5 x 8.1mm. A size a tad elevated where luckily, most of it is occupied by the screen with 2.5D curved glass.

The front gives the impression of being almost all screen, but it should be noted a small frame of one centimeter both at the top and bottom. In the upper frame is the front camera and its flash, the earpiece for calls and the notification LED. For its part, the lower frame remains pristine. No physical button has been incorporated. These are digitally located within the screen.

The back features a single camera on the top and the fingerprint sensor below. Between them is the LED flash for the camera. The camera sensor protrudes a millimeter from the housing.

The aluminum body construction offers a soft touch. This, on the contrary, results in greater ease for it to slip out of the hands. With the use of the included cover this problem can be alleviated.

The upper edge of the terminal offers the same surprise as the Redmi Note 4. Although the 3.5mm Jack is a common element that Xiaomi does not decide to remove yet, in this case we are talking about the infrared sensor that can come in so useful at times. Finally, the noise canceling microphone is also included.

On the left edge there is exclusively the slot for a nanoSIM and a microSD card or two nanoSIM. On the opposite edge, the volume knob is located at the top and the on / off knob slightly lower. Too close to each other, which can lead to errors when pressed.

Finally, the microphone for calls, the multimedia speaker and the microUSB type B port stand out on the lower edge. I do not understand how at this point they have not already incorporated the micro USB type C connector to all their new models.

Altogether, the Redmi Plus 5 weighs 180 grams. An amount that may seem high but does not end up noticing. The good finish of the materials and the correct design manage to hide it quite well.

Large IPS screen with powerful brightness

The high measurements discussed in the previous section are given by the 5.99 inches of the IPS LCD screen. Its size along with its FullHD + resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels give a density of 409 pixels per inch.

The detail and colors are very good. They are not displayed with or without saturation. Blacks are fairly well represented but they are not perfect. The contrast on the other hand, can be modified from the settings menu. It is something that is always appreciated. As for the viewing angles, there is no complaint.

An important feature such as screen brightness is quite effective in outdoor use in the sun. This is possible thanks to the 450 nits it incorporates.

Sound without surprises

The multimedia speaker located on the bottom edge is powerful enough. Also, the sound is reproduced clearly, without distortion or artifacts.

If you have brand headphones you can configure them in options to adjust the equalization. In addition, it is possible to configure and customize the buttons of any earphone.

MIUI 9 holds the type against pure Android

Leaving aside that this Xiaomi brings Android 7.1.2 Nougat. The leading role is played by the well-known MIUI V9 customization layer. This layer usually gives a twist to pure Android. This does not mean that it is a bad thing. On the contrary, it must be recognized that it is one of the best worked layers and with many details and options. It is true that, in addition, some apps introduced by the brand are included, but in general they are a quite useful set of tools.

For those who are not familiar with MIUI it costs a bit at first to get the hang of some features. Curious that the option of having the icons in the taskbar is not by default. On the other hand, there are many options to customize the interface and many others to use the terminal to suit everyone. For example, having the possibility of using a floating ball for notifications, adding shortcuts, one-handed use mode, cloning applications or emulating a second interface as if it were another phone.

The internal memory is made up of 32 GB in the cheapest model and 64 GB in the superior one.

Good but dated performance

Oddly enough, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus incorporates the Snapdragon 625 SoC that gave such good results in the mid-range, a year and a half ago. To be specific, we are talking about a 2GHz eight-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and the Adrenos 506 GPU. The performance of the terminal is fluid both from browsing the operating system and using any app for daily use. Even at stake not quite demanding hardly any lag. The score obtained in AnTuTu has been 76180. However, it must be recognized that today it is not nice in such a well-known company to continue reusing old hardware.

This Soc is accompanied by 3 or 4 GB of RAM, depending on the model, which are more than enough for the use discussed above.

The fingerprint sensor located on the back usually responds perfectly and quickly, without being one of the fastest.

Good but simple camera

Despite the fact that the incorporation of dual cameras is fashionable, this model only incorporates a main rear camera with Omnivision OV12A10 sensor, 12 megapixel resolution and 2.2 focal length.

The camera of the mid-range of the Xiaomi always leaves a very good taste in my mouth. The quality of the snapshots in bright environments offers a very good level of detail and accurate colors. Dynamic range is where it falters a bit and while not bad, it could be better. The use of HDR, as always, somewhat makes up for this lack.

Without HDR

With HDR

In scenes with less light the camera continues to behave. The amount of detail is still good but obviously sharpness is lost. In these scenes, the camera usually captures less light and displays slightly dark snapshots.

Autofocus is pretty good and fast. It only takes a little longer when photographing at night. Zooming, on the other hand, leaves you wanting r and its use won't be very useful.

Among the extra options available we find the typical beauty, panoramic, manual and night options. The exception is the Straighten mode, which adds guides to know when the photo will appear straight.

It is possible to record videos in both full HD and 4K. The image in both is good, but in 4K it costs a little more. It also has a slow-motion or time-lapse effect.

The front camera features a 5 megapixel Omnivision OV5675 sensor with LED flash. This camera without being exceptional, solves the photos it shoots quite well. Although it is far from capturing the details of its older sister, at least it captures what is necessary for the final processing to be good.

Two-day battery

On this occasion, Xiaomi has included as usual a large 4000mAh battery. And honestly, despite the resolution and the huge screen, they have managed to optimize the use of the battery. With moderate use of social networks and web browsing, the terminal has comfortably reached two days of use and more than 7 and a half hours of screen.

Battery time

Screen Hours

However, it is not understood that it does not have fast charge. Even more, if we consider that other models from other Chinese brands already include it as standard. They should keep that in mind for the future.

Therefore, a full charge takes about two and a quarter hours. Almost twice as much will do with fast charging.

Almost typical connectivity

We find the usual features: Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-FI, GPS, GLONASS, FM Radio, voLTE. In addition, as discussed above, an infrared sensor is included with which, through a built-in application, it is possible to manage different devices.

Final words and conclusion about Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

Xiaomi again shows that quality does not have to be at odds with a good price. In my opinion they have launched one of the best low-price mid-range that I have been able to test. Not only does it have an attractive design and it feels good in your hand, but it is also accompanied by a good screen with FullHD + resolution, a very durable battery and a fairly working operating system with many options. The biggest drawback you can get is not having had a more modern processor. Also, the zoom is not good enough at all. It is a shame not to have had support cameras but for the price of the terminal, you cannot ask for much more. For a few, it will be inconvenient, for the vast majority, they will not even notice it.

The biggest advantage of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is its price. It is possible to import it from € 135 or buy it in Spain for around € 180.
