XIDU (Shenzhen Baohuazhong Co Limited) is a Chinese company specialized in the design, manufacture and distribution of computer systems. Today we will introduce this Chinese manufacturer with its XIDU PhilPad XT133A, a 2-in-1 Laptop with a 13.3-inch touch screen, Windows 10 and interesting hardware with 6 GB of RAM and Intel Atom Quad Core inside. And watch out, because it includes a good dock keyboard with touchpad and a Stylus Pen for creators.

This brand wants to bring its products to Spain and has chosen us to do this in-depth review of its Laptop, so let's get started!

But of course, before continuing, we greatly appreciate XIDU's trust in us by transferring their product to us for our review.

XIDU PhilPad technical features

Unboxing

Let's start as always with the Unboxing of the XIDU PhilPad, a fairly complete laptop in terms of specifications and accessories, with a rather groundbreaking price. In any case, it has arrived in a neutral cardboard box with a large "X" in the form of a silkscreen on the front face or absolutely nothing else, just that it comes from China (obviously).

We then open the bundle through the upper area and what we have is the Laptop tucked inside a polythene foam bag next to a screen protector plastic that is included. In turn, the main product comes in another thicker polyethylene mold and separated from other elements such as the keyboard.

In summary, the elements that make up this bundle are the following:

  • XIDU PhilPad XT133A laptop Dock keyboard with touchpad Pen Stylus electronic pen Charging plug Screen saver Welcome card User manual

As we see, a very complete bundle with different and interesting elements to interact with our beautiful Tablet. Of course friends, the Pen Stylus does not have the AAAA battery, so we will have to buy it independently.

XIDU PhilPad Design

Well, we are facing a different XIDU PhilPad wherever you look, inside and outside, so let's see what it can offer us in terms of design. It is a Laptop, at least so as defined by XIDU, laptop mix for its 13.3-inch size, and Tablet mix for not having a fixed keyboard or touchpad.

The design is very careful, with a set that measures 338 mm wide, 200 mm deep and only 15.4 mm thick with a weight of 1.4 Kg. The entire rear body is made of aluminum and also in unibody format, that is, the chassis is integral both in the rear area and on the sides. The finish is accompanied by the natural color of the aluminum with a slight roughness very pleasant to the touch, just as we expected in a product that bets on design.

One of the interesting details about the design of the XIDU PhilPad is that it has a support in the form of an aluminum extension to be able to place it in box mode. It is located on the back and supports an opening of up to 135 ° to place it vertically.

The fastening system of this element is based on two hinges at the ends that are hidden in the interior area and perfectly screwed to the hybrid Laptop. In turn, a central support secures this foot to the structure. In terms of finishes, they are still very good, built in aluminum and with a relatively hard route to prevent the foot from accidentally opening. In any case, we do not know how this system will respond after a long period of use, getting softer or maintaining good grip.

In the front area we will see a screen with frames quite similar to those of tablets that facilitate grip without interfering with touch input. The dual stereo speaker system is located on the bottom and on both sides of the screen, with small openings in the form of grids. In the upper area we have the 2 MP front camera, while in the lower part we have the Windows logo whose function is to open the start menu.

The rear area is completed with a black glass top band that serves as a trim. In addition, in the central area we find the corresponding 5.0 MP sensor as it happens in a normal Tablet.

And it is not all, since under the support we have a slot to insert Micro-SD memory cards of up to 128 GB, in order to expand the storage capacity. In this case it is not a 3G Tablet nor does it support a SIM card.

Ports and side connections

After seeing the exterior design of the XIDU PhilPad XT133A in detail, we only have to analyze the sides to see what connections we find with them.

Let's start with the upper edge, where we only find the power button or screen lock, and the two buttons to increase or decrease the volume. As we have already commented, the edge is part of the same aluminum plate as the rear area, providing rigidity to the set.

Located just on the opposite side, the keyboard fixing system has been installed. It is exactly the same as what we see in other tablets, with two holes to fix the keyboard and a 5-pin connector in the central area to transmit the data. A system of magnets running around the edge, secure the keyboard to the XIDU PhilPad without it moving. By the way, this detail will also be very useful for us to stick the Pen Stylus to this area and transport it without fear of losing it.

On the left side we have absolutely nothing to show, but we do have something on the right, since here are the I / O ports of the XIDU PhilPad. They will be the following:

  • 2x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A1x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C1x 3.5mm Jack audio combo + microphone

A fairly brief distribution, which together with the Micro SD slot complete the available connectivity. It is good news to have at least two full-size USB ports running at 5Gbps. As for USB-C, the manufacturer does not give details about DisplayPort compatibility, so we interpret that it does not have any extra video output.

Dock keyboard and Pen Stylus

The XIDU PhilPad does not come much less alone, a low profile keyboard in TKL format is included with it and also the stylus that will make life easier for those who want a different element than the finger to operate the laptop.

Starting with the keyboard, it is a dock-type component (detachable) very similar to that included in other smaller tablets, for example the CHUWI Hi9 Plus. The key system is directly integrated into a rigid panel of typical rough synthetic leather and padded by the access area.

It comes with an Asian distribution, that is, without the visible letter Ñ, although obviously we can use it without problems with the ES-es Windows distribution. What's more, the system itself has already arrived in perfect Spanish, so it's just getting used to it. Like any other laptop keyboard, it has its own row of "F" keys with dual functions, such as volume control, brightness control, multimedia keys, and some shortcuts to mail, or search.

The actuation system is of course membrane, with a practically non-existent key travel of only a couple of millimeters, and a good quality, of course not at the level of the keyboards integrated in laptops. In any case, the size of the keys is correct, as well as their separation, so I have written this analysis without any problem.

On the part of the touchpad, it is very small and has the two buttons integrated at the bottom of the touchpad itself, come on, which has been a typical configuration. The performance and touch is good, although obviously we are a bit small to go through a screen in 2K resolution like this.

And finishing with the lower area, we are struck by the fact that we have not used a plastic or hard synthetic leather protection to support it on the ground. It is a simple extra detail, but a hard surface is going to dirty less than for example this padding that it carries. We imagine that this choice has been to prevent the laptop from slipping on surfaces such as glass or melamine, in this sense it is a smart option.

Regarding the Pen Stylus, it is a stylus built in aluminum and that needs an AAAA battery to function. Be careful, it is not an AAA, and it is not included in the bundle, which is a small disadvantage that should be remedied.

The integration with the XIDU PhilPad is excellent, with a good movement through it and the two corresponding buttons for manual control. It is a pencil that reacts to the level of pressure so that with dexterous hands it will be our extension in writing or drawing.

2K IPS screen

About the screen of the XIDU PhilPad we do not have too many technical details from the manufacturer, something quite normal in this type of device.

What we do know is that it is a 13.3-inch panel in a panoramic 16: 9 image format. Best of all, its resolution is WQHD 2K (2560x1440p) and the image panel is IPS technology. This gives us the advantage of having great viewing angles of 178 ° with zero distortion of your image. Something that we do detect without knowing a priori the specifications, is that the panel does not have too high a brightness, so its handling outdoors or with powerful lighting will be somewhat limited.

The panel, in turn, is a 10-point touch panel, as is the case with all or almost all tablets on the market with a correct touch, although not as sensitive as the Smartphone panels. We must bear in mind that we are on Windows, and the interaction is not exactly the same as Android or iOS, being somewhat rougher if we do not put the Tablet mode in the notification bar.

Brief review of its calibration

Since we're on Windows 10 and don't have too much data about the panel, let's explore it further with our X-Rite ColorMunki Display colorimeter, and the free calibration programs HCFR and DisplayCal. All the tests carried out have been carried out with the maximum brightness.

Brightness and Contrast

Measurements Contrast Gamma value Color temperature Black level
@ 100% gloss 790: 1 2.19 8188K 0.0886 cd / m 2

We have obtained a contrast of 790: 1, which is certainly not too high considering that an average IPS panel reaches 1000: 1. In any case, it is not an aspect that worsens the image quality, since this 2K resolution feels like a fable to the XIDU PhilPad. We also learn that it is an 8-bit panel (16.7 million colors), that its gamma curve is very well adjusted to 2.2, the generic calibration value, and that its black level is quite good and less than 0.1 nits, something typical of IPS panels.

Regarding the registered brightness, it is too low, with values that are in the 60 nits. That is why we say that under powerful lighting it will be difficult to have a good visual experience, so your ideal environment will be spaces with artificial lighting. In its favor we say that the uniformity of the entire panel is very good and these values practically do not vary in the 3 × 3 grid that we have chosen.

Calibration curves

We have checked how well the curves of this monitor fit into what is considered ideal for the sRGB color space, and we see that at least the luminance and the gamma curve are almost perfect.

In the case of color temperature, this panel tends to show colors in a rather cold tone, staying far from the 6500K considered ideal for an average user. Similarly, the RGB levels are not too close together on the graph.

Finally, with DisplayCAL we have obtained the values corresponding to the main color spaces that the XIDU PhilPad panel meets. As we can see, where it behaves best is in sRGB, fulfilling almost 70% of it, while in DCI-P3 which is much larger, it only fulfills 50%.

Cameras and sound

Now we are going to enter fully into the sound reproduction and cameras section of the XIDU PhilPad. This is where it is most different from a laptop and most similar to a Tablet, since we have a 2.0 MP front sensor and a 5.0MP rear sensor.

Starting with the rear sensor, it is capable of capturing images at 2560x1920p (4.9 MP) resolution and capturing video at 1080p @ 30 FPS. It has autofocus, face detection and HDR, giving us images of an acceptably good quality in good lighting conditions.

The front sensor is more similar to the one we find as a WebCam in notebooks, although superior to these, being able to capture images at a resolution of 1536x1152p and record video at 720p @ 30 FPS. Obviously this sensor will be practically limited to being able to make video calls and so on. The microphone is hidden in the back of the Tablet noting only a small hole for sound capture.

Rear camera

Rear camera

Front camera

And speaking of sound, the truth is that in this Laptop we do not have a remarkable audio power. A realtek codec forms the section of the sound card with a double stereo speaker that gives us a volume perhaps too low for what we are used to. The Jack audio output does provide good quality and normal headphone volume.

Experience with Windows 10 Home x64 pre-installed

The XIDU PhilPad includes Windows 10 Home, making it a Tablet that we can use as a normal and ordinary laptop and install all of Windows' own applications. This is undoubtedly one of the great advantages of this device, although we must bear in mind that the most powerful applications such as Photoshop and the like will not do as well as they should with the installed hardware. And the same can be said of the games, although those available in the Microsoft Store based on platforms and puzzles will perform without problems.

The touch input is not at the level of the Smartphone, being a little less sensitive, although it has worked without any problem, both in the desktop mode and in the Tablet mode that Windows has. In general we do not have any type of curfew of the chosen option, since the versatility that it gives us in terms of applications and handling is fantastic.

Network connectivity

As for network connectivity, we are also going to be pretty brief with this XIDU PhilPad XT133A.

In this case obviously we only have wireless connectivity, since physically there is not enough space for an Ethernet connector. The network card that has been mounted is an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 that can work in the IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac protocols in the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bands. Of course we find integrated in the same Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity .

Obviously we are far from the Intel 9560 chip that mounts the laptops, but it is a card that also uses an M.2 2230 1216 connection interface, which would invite us to think that we can exchange it for one of greater power if we wish. This installed model has a maximum bandwidth of 433 Mbps in the 5.0 GHz band in 1 × 1 connection with FIPS and FISMA. Being a basic chip we do not have MU-MIMO or Intel vPro.

Internal features and hardware

The next section of interest in this analysis will of course be the hardware for the XIDU PhilPad XT133A. First of all, we must indicate that there are two versions available, the one we analyzed has an Intel Atom x7-E4950 processor, while there is a slightly more powerful version in some respects, with an Intel Celeron N3350.

Focusing on the version that we analyze, which is the most current, we find as CPU this Intel Atom x7-E3950 with Apollo Lake architecture released in late 2016 installed on a BGA1296 socket. It is a fully built processor for laptops and small devices with a manufacturing process at 14 nm FinFET. It has a 4-core and 4-wire configuration working at 1.6 GHz base frequency and 2.0 GHz at maximum frequency, although it does not have turbo Boost technology.

The chip has a TDP of only 12W and a 2MB L2 cache configuration, as these models do not have L3 cache inside. As you all know, this processor has integrated Intel HD Graphics 505 graphics, being a higher version than the Celeron, working at a maximum of 650 MHz and providing video output at 3840 × 2160 @ 60 FPS resolution.

This processor is accompanied by a 6 GB 1866 MHz LPDDR3 RAM memory, a good enough configuration for the system to work smoothly. However, the maximum capacity of this CPU could have been exploited with 2400 MHz LPDDR4 memory.

And finally in the storage section we have an integrated memory of 128 GB eMMC exactly the same as that used by other portable devices. Once again, we believe that a 256GB version would be a great option for users who want a little more capacity, but also have the simple option of expanding storage via Micro SD with the built-in slot on the back.

5000 mAh battery

Luckily for us, the XIDU PhilPad includes a large 5000 mAh 7.4V battery and its respective 12V and 3A power supply. This configuration has given us autonomy with normal use and maximum brightness of about 7 and a half hours, being exactly what the manufacturer promises. During this time, we have browsed, edited this article and seen the odd movie as we say at maximum brightness and volume.

We have been pleasantly surprised by this great autonomy with an operating system that is not Android or iOS, which usually consume less resources. With it, we have plenty to endure a workday, even more if we lower the brightness in half obviously. The charge will also be carried out fairly quickly, with cycles less than 120 minutes. We just have to take into account that the power supply does not include a European plug, only a British one, so we will need an adapter for it.

Test of performance

We reach the final stretch of this analysis by performing the corresponding performance tests on this XIDU PhilPad. In this case we are not going to use exactly the same as in the rest of laptops, since for its less powerful hardware it would not make any sense.

Memory performance

Let's start this testing phase with the benchmark of the 128 GB eMMC memory that we have installed. For this we have used the CristalDiskMark 6.0.2 program .

We are not facing a PCIe memory or SATA, so the performance in this regard will be quite low in general. We would have liked the manufacturer to take advantage of the PCIe lanes of the Intel Atom to mount at least a slightly faster chip or even an M.2 slot, or the UFS technology that mounts the Smartphone.

Benchmarks

Let's see below the synthetic test block. Being a more basic hardware, we have used the following programs:

  • Cinebench R15 - for performance of the CPUPCMark 8 - for overall performance 3D Mark Night Raid, Cloud Gate and API Overhead - for performance of integrated graphics and CPU.

We must understand that the performance of an Intel Atom is well below the Intel Core, but the fluency working and managing applications such as Office and the browser has been evident. In general, all the work done has given us a good experience, although sometimes it is true that it takes time to process certain things, which is something that we see as normal at this level.

Temperatures

The temperatures of this CPU are simply splendid, since at no time have we exceeded 39 ° C on average, neither at rest nor under stress, and we have had a good time with Prime95 open. It is evident that the Intel Atom are processors oriented to very small spaces, and since its architecture, the minimum 12W TDP has been taken care of, which makes the equipment not even warm enough to take a thermal photo.

Final words and conclusion about XIDU PhilPad XT133A

We come to the end of this Review, and we found the XIDU PhilPad a fantastic set for everyday use and users not too demanding on performance. The versatility that gives us a hybrid between Tablet and laptop with Windows 10 Home is one of its advantages, and a 13.3-inch 2K screen completes this configuration.

Regarding hardware, we have 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of ROM and an Intel Atom with integrated HD 505 graphics that will perform well as long as we do not demand too much. Although its main feature is to provide a fantastic autonomy of almost 8 hours with maximum brightness.

The design is also noteworthy, since aluminum has been used for the entire chassis and a fairly stable and quality support to be able to place in portable mode. It includes a keyboard with touchpad type dock that provides a good experience of use and a Pen Stylus (without battery) optical and with pressure sensor.

We recommend reading the best laptops on the market

We liked the fact that it includes a Micro SD slot, and a good 5 MP rear camera and a 2 MP one for video chats. We have only lacked the one that includes 3G connectivity like other tablets and a somewhat more powerful sound to enjoy more multimedia content.

We will have this XIDU PhilPad XT133A available in the XIDU Store for 364 euros with a discount of $ 30 with the coupon "FLASH30", you also have it available in the Aliexpress store. It is a very good price for everything that this hybrid between Tablet and laptop can offer us, although it is true that we will not be able to ask too many performance demands. It will be a very successful purchase if we need a device to work while traveling, or a use based on navigation and basic tasks.
