The Steam Link is dead, and that's not good news, but now we have the technology at our disposal to resuscitate it in a very simple way. Valve's Sam Lantinga has announced that the Steam Link app is now available in beta for Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 3 B +.

To install the application, make sure that you are running the version of Raspbian available since August 201 7, after checking it you only have to enter the following from a command terminal to install all the necessary packages.

curl - # Of http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink_1.0.2_armhf.deb sudo dpkg -i steamlink_1.0.2_armhf.deb

Once the process is complete, you can open the Steam Link app from the Games menu or by running the steamlink command. This makes the small 35-euro mini PC go far beyond simple retro emulation. Valve removed Steam Link because the Steam Link app would live on mobile devices and smart TVs, but those don't always offer the same benefits.

Steam's home streaming technology shines brightest when connected via Ethernet for minimal latency, and when you can use an Xbox, PlayStation, or Steam Controller controller with it. You can't do that easily with most cell phones or TVs, but you can do it with the Raspberry Pi, which is very affordable for all Steam users.

Creating your own Raspberry Pi-based Steam Link isn't as convenient as buying a precompiled one, but this technology is too good in the living room to let loose. This revival is welcome, and we can't wait to try it out first hand.
