GDDR5X memories have just hit the market alongside the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX Titan X graphics card and we already know the first details of its successor, the GDDR6. Even more striking is the fact that details about the HBM3 memory have also leaked when its predecessor, the HBM2, hasn't even made an appearance yet.

First known features of HBM3 and GDDR6 memories

The new HBM3 memory will arrive between 2019 and 2020 and will be developed by Samsung and SK Hynix to meet the needs of new generations of graphics cards. This new memory will be a major evolution to offer twice the density of the HBM2 while doubling the bandwidth and reducing power consumption. The first manufacturer to use it would be AMD with its new generation of GPUs based on the promising Navi architecture that will succeed a Vega that has not yet arrived.

On the other hand we have the GDDR6 memory developed by Samsung and Micron, this would arrive in 2018 to improve the benefits of the current GDDR5. The new GDDR6 memory will be capable of reaching a speed of 14 Gbps in its first versions, which is a great step forward compared to the GDDR5 and GDDR5X while consuming 20% less energy. Hopefully, HBM3 memory will be reserved for the most powerful graphics cards of the future and the GDDR6 will be the one used in most models.
