Z399 could be the name of the new Intel chipset to succeed the X299, this new chipset would bring Skylake-X's successor processors to life. We tell you all the details that are known about this new Intel platform.

Intel is forced to call its next HEDT chipset Z399

The chipset naming has become a point of conflict between AMD and Intel in recent years. The red team simply won't stop to provoke Intel with its chipset name. Ryzen's first generation chipsets were called A320, B350 and X370. With B350, AMD blocked the successor to B250, which Intel quickly called B360. AMD played the same game under the Threadripper brand, which received a chipset named X399. Even on upcoming Z390 motherboards, AMD could be one step ahead again as rumors have been heard of a Z490 chipset for Ryzen with more PCIe lines than X470.

A source from a major PC maker has released information on what Intel will call the successor to X299. The company will simply change the letter and launch a chipset called Z399 instead of X399 which is blocked by Threadripper. The new chipset is supposedly ready for production and is intended for the successor to Intel's HEDT division. However, this is not Cascade Lake-X yet, it is just a Skylake-X update. This generation will come with up to 22 cores that still fit in Intel's LGA 2066 socket.

Both the Z399 and the new Skylake-X-Refresh processors are slated to launch this fall, probably in October. What features the Z399 chipset or Skylake-X update will include is still unknown, only the 22-core count is known.
