Last week, Intel's memory and storage group produced the 10 millionth QLC 3D NAND solid state drive (SSD) based on the NAND die QLC built in Dalian, China.
Intel Builds 10 Million 3D NAND QLC Solid State Drives
Production started in late 2018, and this milestone establishes QLC (Quad Level Cellular Memory) as a core technology for high capacity drives.
Below is a summary of some of the achievements of 3D NAND QLC units recently achieved by Intel.
- Intel QLC 3D NAND is used in Intel SSD 660p, Intel SSD 665p and Intel Optane Memory H10 storage solutions. Intel QLC drive has 4 bits per cell and stores data in 64 and 96 layer NAND configurations. Intel has been developing this technology for the past decade. In 2016, Intel engineers changed the orientation of the proven floating door (FG) technology to vertical and wrapped it in a complete door structure. The resulting tricellular level (TLC) technology could store 384 Gb / die. In 2018, the 3D QLC flash came true, with 64 layers with four bits per cell, capable of storing 1, 024 Gb / die. In 2019 Intel went to 96 layers, reducing the total area density.

QLC is now part of Intel's overall storage portfolio, which includes both customer and data center products.
Intel seems to be happy with the performance of its solid state drives, especially due to the success of the 660p and 665p models.
