3Dmark: what is it, how can we use it and what is it for?

We continue our crusade and the software that we are going to analyze today is 3DMark, one of the different programs created by UL Benchmarks . If you are interested in learning more about what this application can offer us and how it works, read on!

What is 3DMark?

On the other hand, we have the Professional Edition . It costs around € 1, 500 / year and offers us a series of extra features such as online / telephone support, export of data in xml format or license for commercial use. Not surprisingly, if you belong to the specialized technology press you can ask for a free license.

What types of evidence are there?

As far as testing is concerned, we have a good set to choose from. Depending on what we want to test, we can opt for one or the other, since in some tests some technologies have more weight than others. To put you in context we will show you some examples:

  • Port Royal (Advanced Edition) is a test focused on Ray Tracing technology, so reflections and chrome abound. Fire Strike we can glimpse a general balance of different sections, since graphics rendered with detail and complexity are worked in DirectX 11. Night Raid is a test based on DirectX 12 designed to test low-power devices. With it, benchmarks are usually carried out on mobiles, laptops and tablets.

If we go to older tests, what rewarded were the models with a high number of polygons and realistic physics. For teams in the early 2000s or so, this workload was certainly a tough task .

Here we leave you a short video of a comparison between two graphics from the same generation in the Fire Strike test:

And in case you were wondering, UL Benchmarks not only gives us software to test the gross performance of our components. The company also offers us another series of tests aimed at Android , Servers , Workstations or even for Virtual Reality , but that is already a different matter.

As technology advances, 3DMark and its sister programs are updated. Only FireStrike has received a number of great updates to test performance under extreme stress or at 4K resolutions. We have also seen the birth of Port Royal and Time Spy for Ray Tracing and DirectX 12 , respectively.

A point to highlight is a kind of culture around the scores that we will tell you right now.

The culture of scores

A curious section of these tests is that they not only serve to get benchmarks of the performance of our PCs . Some enthusiastic users spend their time improving and optimizing their custom builds to the maximum and these tests are their way of measuring their performance.

The theme is that at the end of each test, an overall score is received for the operation of the computer. This score can be uploaded to the UL Benchmarks database and then added to the global top, and that is where users compete for first place.

Overall Fire Strike Scoreboard

Perhaps you are thinking: "What a stupid thing, just take the best components and get the best scores!" . However, things go much further.

It is very typical that the first place, in single or dual GPU (yes, there are different tops depending on your build), is not shown by the most powerful Persian graphics (for example, the Titan RTX) . This occurs because some modders customize computers to the point of being more supercomputers than conventional computers. They use server-oriented processors, overclock each component, use liquid nitrogen or the like to refrigerate at 0ºC …

WE RECOMMEND YOU Liquid cooling vs. Air cooling Which is better?

The list of virguerías that they carry out are countless, but with this they get scores above the average. It is also true that sometimes they do this just to get the score, since computers are in a sorry state for common use. However, it is something that we could not ignore from these tests.

Here you can see two (somewhat long) videos of two famous English technology channels competing against the leaderboards:

Final words on 3DMark

We cannot go very much against the mainstream that is the Internet and users. 3DMark and UL Benchmarks are relevant today because they are a competent and reliable method of testing both components and entire equipment.

If you are thinking about testing your computer or simply checking how it performs, we highly recommend this software. It is easy to install, it is not dangerous for your computer and it runs automatically, so you only have to wait to receive the results.

Of course, if you want to join the community of enthusiasts who squeeze every volt of energy and watt of power, we would like to stop you. It is very difficult and especially very expensive to be in that world. We do not advise you to try it, since you can lose your health and money quite easily.

In conclusion, for benchmarking, it seems to us that 3DMark , VRMark or PCMark are quite complete tests in their free version. If you want to pounce on even more complete or more specific tests, you can always access the advanced version of this software.

You can get the advanced 3DMark pack for an approximate price of € 25. Also, you can get the pack with all the advanced tests from different UL Benchmarks programs for around € 55.

If you don't do reviews, or aren't interested in technology at such deep levels, maybe it's a bit Overkill . Be that as it may, we assure you that if you buy it, it will be worth the software and you will receive updates for a long time.

And to you, what do you think of 3DMarks and its different tests? Have you ever done the Fire Strike test? Share your ideas and your scores!
