Acer's Predator line is one of the most enthusiastic that currently exists among the best notebook gamers. On this occasion we have been able to test one of its flagship: Acer Predator 17X for two weeks.

Among its main features we find: very striking design, impressive build quality, a screen with Nvidia G-Sync support and great power thanks to the combination of the Intel Kaby Lake processor and the new Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB.

Do you want to know more about this brown beast? Don't miss our review!

Once again we thank Acer for the trust placed in the transfer of the product for its analysis:

Acer Predator 17X Technical Features

Unboxing and design

The Acer Predator 17X arrives in a very colorful black cardboard box. On its cover we see printed the logo so characteristic of the brand and an image of the laptop. While on one of its sides, it already warns us of all the most important technical characteristics of the product.

Once we open the laptop, we find that everything is very well protected. But what does it bring inside? The bundle is made up of:

  • Acer Predator 17X Portable Gamer Instruction Manual Quick Installation Guide Power Supply and Cable

The Acer Predator 17X is a laptop with large dimensions and a very aggressive appearance. It has a 17.3-inch IPS screen (model LP173WF4-SPF5) at a frequency of 75 Hz, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) and 127 PPI.

Among its innovations we find we came across Nvidia's G-Sync technology, which will help us to improve the experience and possible “scratches” while playing.

It has dimensions of 321.5 x 423 x 45 mm and a weight close to 4.5 kg. The first impression impacts, as you realize that it is a great laptop and that it has nothing to envy to any current desktop.

On the right side it incorporates an RJ45 connection signed by the Killer e2400 chip ideal for gamers , an HDMI connection, a Displayport connection, two USB 3.0 connections and a USB Type C connection.

While on the left side it is complemented by a power connection, two USB 3.0 connections, the audio input / output minijack and the SD card reader.

We also leave you some views of the front area.

And from the back, where we see excellent fans and a very aggressive design but, which is very pleasing to see. Also keep in mind that internally it incorporates a wireless Wifi 802.11 AC card signed by the Killer 1535 chip and compatibility with Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity.

Acer opts for a CHICLET-type keyboard that closely simulates the conventional mechanical keyboard. And it is that both the touch and the path of the keys is very pleasant. As we can see in the images, it has a standard keyboard layout: alphanumeric zone, function keys, course keys plus control and a full numeric keyboard.

But it also has in the left area a total of six macro keys, programmable via software, to have a slight advantage over our rivals.

To top it off, it has backlighting with RGB functionality in 4 different areas. For us it is one of the points to consider in a high-end equipment. How can we customize it? We will explain it to you in the “PredatorSense” software section.

Having a great keyboard is great, but the touchpad also needs to be up to scratch. The Acer Predator 17X incorporates one of the best we have tested: 10.5 x 6.5 cm area, allows gestures with up to four fingers , very sensitive to touch and the buttons are also nice. What do you not like using the touchpad and prefer a mouse? Acer makes it easy for us with a button in the right area to quickly deactivate it. It also disables us the Windows key?

At the bottom of the laptop it incorporates enough grids to have more than efficient ventilation. But one of the most interesting points is that it incorporates a small "hatch" that allows us to access the memory, the M.2 SSD and the disk. conventional hard. This is great since we don't have to take apart the entire laptop for quick updates.

As for the processor we find an i7 7820HK of the socket socket FCBGA 1440 with 4 cores and 8 threads based on the Kaby Lake architecture at a frequency of 2.90GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz with a TDP of 45W.

It has a total of 32 GB of DDR4 SODIMM RAM at 1.2V and 2400 MHz in dual channel. Although we can upgrade it to 64GB, we see 32 GB a perfect amount to use the equipment for both gaming and high-performance work.

On storage, the Acer Predator 17X comes equipped with a Toshiba 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD drive with readings of 1490MB / s and write of 1300MB / s.

To complement a fast system we also need a good storage system, this time it has a 1 TB HGST signed data hard drive at a speed of 7200 rpm. The great combination for fast operating system and data storage on the second hard disk.

The graphics section is quite remarkable with the presence of two pieces Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards with a total of 2560 CUDA Cores accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 256-bit interface and a bandwidth of 320 GB / s. With these specifications we can play any game in Ultra with all the filters and without messing around with the Full HD resolution. This team is perfectly qualified to run any game on an external 4K screen, virtual reality and everything you want to throw at it. You have nothing to envy of a desktop computer.

PredatorSense software

In order to get the most out of a laptop of this height, it must come equipped with good software. Acer incorporates the "PredatorSense" that allows us to perform: overclocking, control temperatures of the entire system, fan speeds, create profiles for macros and configure keyboard lighting in four areas.

Test of performance

Regarding performance tests we have passed Cinebench R15 and the result is fantastic thanks to its i7-7820HK processor that shoots up to 612 CB points.

Among the tests we have passed normal 3DMARk Fire Strike, its Ultra 4K version , Time Spy and the new Superposition. We leave you the results achieved:

Finally we leave you the performance tests with several very demanding titles and the most played of the moment. We have chosen to only pass the games to the native resolution (1920 x 1080 - Full HD) so that you can see what good performance 4K offers as is with an external monitor with G-Sync.
