The 240Hz battle takes another step forward with the Acer Predator XB252Q. It is a monitor focused on e-Sports players and other games with a lot of movement, for this it mounts a TN panel of 24.5 inches with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, response time of 1 ms and G-Sync. All this without neglecting a design at the height of gaming fashion, and focused on offering great comfort of use.
We are grateful to Acer for the trust placed in giving us the product for analysis.
Acer Predator XB252Q technical features
Unboxing and design
Acer Predator XB252Q comes inside a large cardboard box, which ensures perfect protection of the product until it reaches the hands of its end user. The box shows us an image of the product, as well as its most notable features, such as the delegated bezels, the refresh rate of 240 Hz and the inclusion of G-Sync.
Once we open the box we find the monitor and all the accessories perfectly placed between two large pieces of cork, as well as being wrapped to offer greater protection of the surfaces, especially the monitor panel.
Acer Predator XB252Q continues the trend of this series of gaming monitors, slim bezels, the shade of matte black, the large logo, and great manufacturing quality. Acer has decided to forgo red accents this time, leaving a cleaner finish that will match better with equipment.
The construction of the monitor is up to expectations, with a robust body that combines the use of plastic and metal to offer great resistance while maintaining a contained weight. The mounting of the base is really very simple, since you just have to fit it in the back and fix it with the attached screws.
There's also great ergonomic flexibility complete with height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustments for better ergonomics of use. This base is very robust and totally stable on the table.
The “ZeroFrame” mark on the box means it will perform well in a multi-monitor setup, with the top and side frames measuring just 7mm. Looking at it from one side, the monitor seems thick, at least more than what we are used to seeing today. If space is an issue, you may want to consider using a VESA mount.
As for connectivity, the Acer Predator XB252Q includes a DisplayPort 1.2 port and an HDMI 1.4 port for video input, with a total of five USB 3.0 ports spread across the back and left to connect a large number of peripherals and any additional thing. You'll also find a 3.5mm audio headphone jack, in case you don't want to use the monitor's built-in 2W speakers. The latter are pretty good on paper for system notifications and configuration testing, but hopefully they don't measure up for gaming or general entertainment.
Acer has also implemented a blue light function to reduce eye fatigue in long sessions of use, something that will be very important for gamers and other users who spend many hours a day in front of the PC.
The Acer Predator XB252Q works well from the factory, but as we will see, it improves and long after some brightness and contrast adjustments, which come somewhat high. This means that the monitor does not come well calibrated at the factory, so the user will have to get their hands on the configuration if they want to get the most out of it.
Other useful settings you'll find are hotkey assignments, a power LED dimmer, USB port power settings, and a refresh rate counter that is quite limited in use, as most of the games and launchers already have options to display FPS counters.
If you look at the quality of the 24-inch TN panel, the XB252Q brings Ultra Low Motion Blur technology, which only works up to 144Hz, and serves to keep the image ghosting-free up to that ceiling. This technology will be especially interesting for e-Sports players like Overwatch or CS: GO. Added to this is a response time of just 1 ms, and the presence of G-Sync technology, a combination that promises to offer us the best fluidity in our games. As for the brightness it offers us 400 nits, a very correct value.
The use of a TN panel also has its drawbacks, since this technology is the one that offers the worst quality of colors, and is very limited in viewing angles. This is not a monitor focused on image professionals, although if you need to do any image editing that needs enough color fidelity, you are not facing the best monitor on the market, much less.
The main weak point of this monitor is a fairly low contrast, although the manufacturer specifies it at 1000: 1. This means that the image quality is not the best when it comes to watching movies and other types of videos. Sure, it won't stop you from enjoying your sessions, but the scenes will be less shocking than they could be. In short, it is a panel designed for electronic sports, where the visual elements are clearly represented on the screen.
In this environment, the Acer Predator XB252Q has remarkable performance as it shows zero ghosts and traces when you take a quick shot or quickly look around the corners and back. Enemies moving beyond intermittent or closed cover have sharper silhouettes.
OSD
To access and control the OSD we have four buttons and a joystick, all of them are located horizontally along the back, just next to the lower right edge. When it comes to configuration options, you'll find the usual range of presets and calibration options, including Acer's RGB color temperature , gamma scale, saturation, and GameView for user-calibrated profiles. There is also an sRGB button.
Final words and conclusion about Acer Predator XB252Q
The Acer Predator XB252Q monitor is one of the best gaming monitors that we can currently buy. TN panel with 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, super-mobile, super-solid base, a variety of connections, and Nvidia's G-Sync technology.
Our tests with games like PUBG, Fortnite, LOL and Doom 4 have been fantastic. Giving us a great advantage when it comes to seeing our rivals. I personally think that few monitors are up to this Predator.
We recommend the best monitors on the market
The OSD panel is another one of the great advantages. With a small joystic and super complete menus, it allows us to take as much control as possible to our new monitor. Nothing to envy any other monitor. Perhaps, for users looking for graphic design, they should choose an IPS monitor instead of a TN one. But this monitor is focused on pure and simple gaming.
The sale price of the Acer Predator XB252Q is 499 euros in the main online stores. If you are looking for a competitive gaming monitor, with a high refresh rate and G-Sync, this Acer Predator is the best that the market offers. How about?
