We have with us the recently released Acer Predator XB3, one of the great novelties of the brand in terms of high-end gaming monitors and in 4K resolution and 27 inches. An impressive product with DisplayHDR 400, Nvidia G-Sync technology and 144Hz on an IPS panel to leave us speechless in its image quality. Unboxing and design

This Acer Predator XB3 is a large monitor, therefore the package will be exemplary. The product, as well as all its accessories, which are not few, come perfectly packed in a thick cardboard box with a presentation worthy of the quality and price of the product. All of it is printed in colors in shades of gray and blue with a full-color photo of this monitor with its accessories attached and the Predator symbol.

Inside we can see a perfect placement with two huge expanded polyethylene corks with numerous holes to store cables and papers. In turn, in the upper area we have a box that occupies the complete plane where we will have the “ears” of this monitor stored, which we will later see in more detail. In total we will have all these elements inside:

We only have to mount the parasols, since the monitor and foot come pre-installed and ready to use.

The general appearance of the Acer Predator XB3 is sensational, its screen is not completely matte, but rather has some glossing (brightness). The external frame is constructed of PVC of considerable thickness judging by touch and 15 mm wide with smooth bezels on both sides.

We can see on its top sticker the main characteristics of this monitor, with its 27 inches, Nvidia G-Sync as synchronization technology among other features that we will see in detail later. We also have its energy label, which shows that it is precisely not low consumption, being in category D, with a maximum energy consumption of 65 W.

For its part, the support is entirely made of metal, as well as its large and firm legs. The support column is finished with PVC plastic in its outer area and has a hydraulic system to move the monitor up and down. The support is quite forceful so that the monitor does not shake at table movements.

For its support on the ground it consists of three metal legs that generate a depth extension of 307 mm, so the support base is quite large. The measurements of the complete set are 629 mm wide, 541 mm high and those 307.20 mm deep. Of course these measurements may vary depending on the final position in which we place this Acer Predator XB3.

In the upper area of the support frame, we have a small extendable accessory to hang our headphones or to place any other cable that we have to spare. We can also appreciate the thickness of this column, as well as its PVC finish and the symbol that identifies it.

Excellent finishes in general for a monitor that undoubtedly deserves it, both for its range and for its cost and benefits, good work from Acer.

The ergonomics of this Acer Predator XB3 is also very good, since it has height adjustment through its hydraulic arm, which gives us a range of 100 mm between the lowest position and the highest position.

We must emphasize that in this case we do not have the possibility of rotating the screen to place it in reading mode, mainly because in a monitor of these measurements it does not make sense and it would also need a much longer arm.

In addition to its height adjustment, we also have the possibility to rotate it on its Z axis to customize the orientation. The turn that we can complete will be 20 degrees to the left or 20 to the right, which is not too much, but it is enough to offer good versatility.

The turning movement will be carried out on both the monitor and the support arm by means of a joint at the level of the support legs.

To complete its ergonomics, we have the possibility to rotate it on the Y axis (front tilt). The range it supports is 5 degrees down and 25 degrees up, being much higher than what we are used to in other monitors.

We now turn to see in more detail the rear area of this Acer Predator XB3. If we take into account the screen size, we must say that it is a relatively thick device, we are talking about 86.3 mm, although very well disguised by its curved lines and its taper.

Its PVC finish shows us an important upper grille that will facilitate the cooling of this equipment. The system used by Acer is an active type, with internal fans that can be heard from the moment we turn on the monitor. It is a soft, but noticeable sound.

We must also highlight that it has compatibility with the VESA 100 × 100 mm mounting bracket, of which we have a wall bracket as an accessory.

Before going to see the connectivity, we can not forget the parasols that this product incorporates. In total there are three elements, the two sides will be installed by means of two screws on the screen frame, and the upper one will be fitted on the previous two.

Their construction is based on fairly rigid PVC plastic, with a black velvet finish on the inside for greater absorption of reflections and residual shine.

The end result is a monitor with great isolation from the outside and from ambient light, to be able to work fully concentrated or have a greater immersion in our games. Of course, we must take into account that the width of the monitor will increase by about 14 cm more.

In the connectivity section, this monitor also has a lot to say, we can divide it into three areas, we will start with the bottom area, where the power supply and video source connectors are.

Removing a protective plastic cover we will find an HDMI port, another DisplayPort and a 3.5mm Jack for audio output, in addition to the power connector. We must emphasize that in this case the power supply is external.

In the rear area we have a USB 3.0 type-B port to provide a data transfer path from the monitor and the PC to support its 4 USB 3.0, two in the rear area and two others in the side area.

This Acer Predator XB3 has a first-level technical section and with enough technology behind it. We are facing a 27-inch screen with native resolution of UHD 4K (3840 × 2160 pixels). This results in a density of no less than 161 pixels per inch, at a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz, although this will depend on the port and capacity of our graphics card.

The technology of its in-Plane Computing type display, also called IPS with a 10-bit depth (1.07 billion colors) and LED-type backlighting.

Because it is an IPS panel, we have a response time of 4 milliseconds GTG, a contrast of 1, 000: 1 and a brightness of no less than 350 nits (cd / m ²) native and 400 nits in HDR mode, and it is that's why it supports DisplayHDR 400, a feature that takes the quality of graphics and color depth of this screen to another level with a color gamut of 90% DCI-P3.

This Acer Predator XB3 also has two built-in 4W stereo speakers, these sound pretty good and at a good volume level.

The experience with the parasols in place has been more than satisfactory, and the truth is that their presence and absence are highly noticeable, especially when the reflections of the day enter the window or we have lighting near the monitor. They isolate this light very well and prevent reflections from entering the screen or color dispersion.

The level of immersion in games also improves, which together with HDR activated is simply a joy to behold. The backlight is also noticeable, with good light output, especially in white, so we recommend activating it.

OSD panel and USE experience

To access the OSD panel of the monitor, we will only have to take hold of the rear controls that are located on the right side of the monitor. The most interesting thing of all is that this Acer Predator XB3 has a joystick with which we can manage all the menus in a very fast and easy way.

With the first button on the back, we can take out a quick menu where we can quickly choose one of the display profiles for this monitor. We have quite a few of them for gaming, movies, graphics and an ECO mode. I really complete this menu.

With other buttons, we can get a menu to also quickly choose the brightness level of the monitor, as well as the menu or the video input port.

The menu is undoubtedly very complete, with a total of six sections in which you can modify each and every one of the systems and options of this monitor. Practically all the options are quite intuitive, and thanks to the joystick control it is very easy to navigate and select.

Games

The gaming experience of this gaming monitor has been license plate, we already say that the HDR 400 is undoubtedly one of the utilities that stand out the most in this regard. The fluidity that is achieved with the high refresh rate in this 4K resolution is incredible. The response time of 4 milliseconds is enough to not have LAG, except for what our card can give if it is not a high range, so for most players it is a more than acceptable response time, we must take into account that It is not a TN panel, but IPS.

Films

In the reproduction of multimedia content, the fidelity of colors stands out, with having saturated colors and a very realistic naturalness. In this sense, HDR is less important and so is the refresh rate, since all movies are recorded at 24 or 60 FPS.

The immersion that is obtained with the parasols is very interesting, so we recommend its use in most cases, provided we have enough space. The only limitation we have to enjoy 4K content is the enormous weight of the videos.

Graphic design

Being an IPS panel, what stands out the most is its representation of colors. A 10-bit color depth allows us to do our job in the best possible way. So , if this monitor stands out in anything, it is precisely in the image quality, that is clear. The factory calibration is excellent, and in the absence of a colorimeter to technically test these colors, we must limit ourselves to saying that the balance is sublime. For professionals who have worked until now with Full HD resolutions, obtaining one of these monitors, they will not want anything else.

The external design is also worth commenting on, we have a fairly strong steel hydraulic support, with a triple support on the ground also totally metallic. The frames are plastic, although of good quality and sufficient thickness, without any type of defect. The presence of the parasols, as we have mentioned, is quite noticeable, for a better immersion in our work / game. Backlighting also helps this experience.

The only downside that we could get out of this Acer Predator XB3 is the small constant background noise that we have due to active cooling. It does not reach the level of a PC chassis, but it will be around 20 dB.
