The new Adata XPG Precog Gaming Headset headphones come with more gadgets than the Batman belt to guarantee that you don't miss a single detail while immersing yourself in the game. Do you want to know more? Join us.

XPG is the gaming aspect of Adata Tecnology. The Taiwanese brand has been with us since 2001 and it is in more recent times that it has taken the step from manufacturing PC components to high-end peripherals and gaming products.

Unboxing

In many cases the brands understand the packaging as something secondary, a beautiful presentation and that protects the product for its transport and sale without further pretension. In the case of Adata XPG Precog, things go further, showing us an informational band in cardboard that wraps around a resistant black PVC box where the headphones are located.

On the cover we find the image of the Adata XPG Precog Gaming Headset highlighted with shiny resin. In addition, it is accompanied on the right by the High Resolution Audio Certificate and on the left with its most outstanding features:

  • High-Fidelity Dual Drivers FPS ( first person shooter ) mode for positional precision Advanced Environment Noise Canceling Technology Virtual surround sound 7.1 USB Type-C connection included

On the sides of the presentation we find on the one hand on the left information about the PC game XPG Epic, which we can download on the Official Website. On the other hand, on the right is an infographic with the list of components that contains the case of the Adata XPG Precog.

Finally, on the back we have another illustrated scheme that shows us the internal composition of the sound controllers as well as the accessories and external DSP (digital signal processor) that includes the USB Type-C cable as well as the volume regulator and microphone mute on the 3.5 jack model. Also at the bottom are various quality certificates as well as a link to the official website for the product and other information.

When removing the cardboard band that we can consider as packaging, we have the chest. Matte black in color and smooth in texture, the embossed XPG logo stands out with a slightly shiny finish. Its closure is by zipper and has a handle on the top.

When we open it we find a mold where the Adata XPG Precog fit perfectly, as well as a mesh with several compartments where we find all the accessories available as well as the quick start manual.

The total content of the box is summarized in:

Adata XPG Precog Headphone Design

The Adata XPG Precog is a plastic and aluminum mounted body headset that combines matte and gloss black finishes along with synthetic fabric for padding and glossy aluminum details. They are the first gaming headphones in the world with a double sound controller (electrostatic and dynamic driver).

The supraural band

The supraural band is not in one piece, which somewhat lightens its weight. The structure is divided into two parts: on the one hand we have two aluminum supports lined with rubber tubes and on the other an adaptable plush lined with padded fabric on its underside, which is the one that rests on our head.

On the plush we can find the XPG logo embossed, which contrasts with the slightly rough texture and leather feel that covers the rest of the band.

On the inside we have the padding with stitched ends with red thread. To the touch it is made of memory foam and has a softer texture than on the outer side.

At the end of the band on each side we find separate plastic extenders that facilitate the elasticity of the plush without the need for regulators. This plush is joined with the hinges, both with a polished aluminum finish and also the aluminum bands within which the sound cables are located.

As a detail we have white and R screenprinted to indicate its position as the European Quality Certificate among others.

The headphones

We got to the sound drivers section. The outer structure is made of plastic combining matte and glossy black, while the padded pads are made of synthetic leather and can be removed for dry cleaning. Inside the drivers we have the logo printed in white on the fabric that covers the structure.

The aluminum hinges have great resistance and allow a rotation of 180º horizontal and another 45º vertical, guaranteeing maximum flexibility to accommodate the user. On its outer face we have a circular relief surface that lights up red when connected through the USB C connector if we want. On them we have engraved in bas-relief the XPG logo.

On the other hand, in the lower area of the left earphone is where the 3.5 jack connections for the removable microphone are located, another 3.5 jack to use this model of cable and USB type C if we prefer to use the latter.

The microphone

For its part, the removable microphone has a solid structure in which the outer bar is very flexible as the metal spiral is lined with black rubber. The terminations on both the microphone end and the 3.5 jack are reinforced with black plastic to provide extra protection. For its part, the microphone has a fabric lining (removable) to reduce the pickup of external noise.

A nice detail is that the inside of the microphone has a microphone icon to indicate the side from which the sound is picked up when speaking.

Once we connect the microphone we can verify that it has a more than enough length, so that we can place it both next to our lips and just in front of them according to the user's preference.

Cables and accessories

Something that we have loved about the Adata XPG Precog is that it brings more accessories than the Batman belt. Do you play on PC? Here you have a USB connector that includes 7.1 sound. Does your computer have a separate 3.5 microphone and voice jack? No problem: double track cable. Do you want to use them on your tablet, mobile or console, which has a 3.5 mixed jack? You are covered, also count on it. This is something really fantastic because the freedom it offers in terms of connections allows each user to choose their favorites or simply adapt them according to the situation.

Another point is the fact that all the cables are braided in black fiber, with the ports reinforced on the outside by aluminum.

In the USB type C connector we find that the port that must be connected to the headphones has the icon of the headphones stamped on its structure with a matte white finish. The same goes for the 3.5 mic and audio jack connectors. They are nonsense, but we love those touches that make the user live.

Regarding the cables as a whole, they all have a length that once "installed" is around 180cm. And we say installed because unless we use the 3.5 mixed jack by default, they are designed to join each other. The 3.5 mixed jack includes a volume regulator and a button to mute the microphone while the USB type C has the same controls as well as an on / off switch for the headphone lighting as well as a button for the three possible sound modes: FPS, Music and Surround 7.1.

Putting the Adata XPG Precog headphones into use

This section of the review will be slightly different from the usual given that we are going to separate it according to which connector cable we have used. You can't say we're not conscientious, huh? Let's go there.

Jack 3.5 mixed and splitter extension

As we have previously mentioned, the most basic way to use Adata XPG Precog is through Jack 3.5 mixed audio and micro. This cable has a controller with volume regulator and built- in microphone mute, reaching a length of 130cm (180cm with the splitter cable). Being 3.5 jack, compatibility is absolute although in this mode (and also with the splitter extender) the sound is stereo.

The union with the extension cable once we hear the click of the socket is quite firm and requires an intentional force to separate it again (no accidental jerks). The resulting total length is very comfortable for gaming environments given the total cable generosity.

Stereo quality is good. Its double sound controller is made up of an electrostatic and a dynamic driver.

  • The electrostatic driver is off and distant. It is responsible for the subtlest and furthest sounds, as if they were at the bottom of the speaker. The dynamic driver creates a sense of closeness and is more positional, emphasizing movement. It is the driver that enhances three-dimensional perception.

The combination of both drivers generates a special effect both playing and listening to music. There are very close sounds and others that are left behind. This obviously varies from song to song and also between the games themselves.

It is possible that some players very used to the sound of dynamic drivers will find this format strange at first, although this depends a lot on personal preferences.

The overall perception is fairly balanced between the lowest and highest sounds. This neutrality is enhanced by the feeling of atmosphere that is generated in the headphones themselves, although it may be the reason that a certain lack of intensity is perceived if we do not listen to them at high volume.

Something that we have noticed is that the maximum sound that we reach with the 3.5 jack is less than what we can achieve with the USB cable regulator.

USB and 7.1 Surround Sound

By using the USB Type-C to Type-A connector, PC users have the ability to tailor sound to three different modes: First Person Shooter, Surround7.1, and Music.

  • First Person Shooter: Emphasizes the dynamic driver to optimize spatial perception of sound by proximity and direction (footsteps, shots, voices). Surround 7.1: The external sound card comes into play, which works with the dynamic driver and relies on the electrostatic to enhance the feeling of distance. Music: the difference between low and high tones becomes stronger, varying according to the format of each song.

Using this connection mode we have seen an improvement in the quality and intensity of the sound. We add this to the external digital signal processor that is integrated in the USB cable, which together with a wider volume regulator than the one integrated with the 3.5 jack.

Without a doubt we have enjoyed it much more with a USB connection since the sound modes controller is used to the full advantage.

Insulation and lighting

The Adata XPG Precog have passive sound cancellation technology, in this case the ENC system (Environment Noise Cancellation in Spanish). The insulation provided by the memory foam from the pads is effective thanks to its density. We have used headphones listening to music on the street and we have been quite satisfied. Sounds of the horn cut, ambulances and serious engines such as trucks or buses are what we can hear despite having loud music, but the rest is totally dissipated.

Sound cancellation can also be found in the microphone actively, which we can activate and deactivate in the USB cable controller (ENC on / off).

On lighting, it works only with the connection via USB. The outer ribbed surface of the headphones is illuminated with a reddish red light (not excessively bright) so as not to generate reflection on our monitor or television screen. This lighting can be turned off with a switch located on the controller and in turn has a white LED that tells us if it is on or off.

XPG Epic FPS Experience

As an extra, the FPS game for PC XPG Epic is available on the official website of Adata, which we can download from the Official Website and is a small experience in which we can test the headphones.

Final words and conclusions about Adata XPG Precog

The Adatas made us fall in love from the first moment. The detail of the box as well as the attention paid to the finishes and materials (braided cables, reinforced connectors in aluminum, removable microphone, lighting, design…) reinforces the feeling of being in front of a quality product. They have been very comfortable to use and have a certain weight that comes from the solidity of their structure. However, we understand that it may not be to the liking of all users. The ear canopy is quite generous, with soft and flexible padding both on the ears and on the elastic headband.

We recommend reading the Best gaming headphones on the market.

PC gamers will really enjoy the possibilities offered by the USB connector thanks to the integrated controller. On the flip side of the coin, those using other platforms can count on a good quality stereo (also with driver). The lighting for its part is a discreet but pleasant detail that will undoubtedly delight the most fanatical of the little lights. For its part, the sound of the headphones is quite rich. Its bass is not overly deep, and passive isolation does its job like a charm. If you have to put a "but" it would only be in the case of the microphone, which has a slightly metallic sound, although not annoying when speaking.

Finally there is the question of the starting price of the Adata XPG Precog, which starts from € 119.99 on its official page. They may not be headphones within reach of all pockets, but the price is not only there for the sound but also for the quality of the materials with which they are made and the number of additional components. Undoubtedly, its finishes are the aspect that has most caught our attention and it is the path that Adata must follow in the gaming world.
