AMD is starting to ship BIOS updates for all AM4 motherboards, with the goal of being able to host the new Ryzen 'Raven Ridge' APU processors, which would be imminently announced in the first days of January, more specifically at CES 2018 from Las Vegas.

Raven Ridge APUs Coming To Desktop Computers Very Soon

AMD is moving its chips as planned, unifying traditional desktop CPU platforms and APU processors into a single AM4 socket , unlike previously with the A series. So far, AM4 supports Bristol Ridge APUs and Ryzen CPUs. To prepare for the Raven Ridge release, AMD is shipping BIOS updates to all of its vendors. This will finally bring Zen cores and Vega graphics together in the desktop market.

With vendors getting the BIOS update, it's only a matter of time before we see the Raven Ridge launch. Current rumors point to an announcement at CES 2018 in January.

AM4 will be a long-term platform

By moving to a unified socket, the goal is to provide more value and longevity to customers. AMD divided the previous lineup into AM3 + and FM1 / 2 for CPUs and APU respectively. That increased support costs and limited consumer freedom for updates. The change AMD is proposing is somewhat in line with Intel, which uses an LGA 115x socket for conventional desktop computers. At the same time, AMD will keep AM4 instead of constantly updating its LGA 115x. This means that AM4 owners can rest assured that new processors arriving in the future will not force them to change motherboards.
