Consumer reactions to the Specter and Meltdown vulnerabilities have been strong, Intel has been the subject of more than 30 class action lawsuits and AMD is also targeting consumers, Sunnyvale's are facing four class action lawsuits over the Specter vulnerability.

AMD won't get rid of Specter lawsuits

AMD has been sidelined for much of the controversy because its CPUs are immune to the Meltdown variant, but as with Intel and ARM, its chips are vulnerable to Specter exploits, this causes the company to now face four class action lawsuits.

Three plaintiffs allege that AMD continued to sell its processors to customers at much higher prices than they would have paid if they knew about the Specter problem and its threat to critical security features. They also allege that AMD has been unable to repair the security vulnerabilities, nor has it offered those affected a non-defective CPU or a refund. Software updates don't seem to offer protection against all Specter variants, they also dramatically degrade CPU performance.

The fourth lawsuit seeks a remedy for investors who bought shares between February 21, 2017 and January 11 of this year, whom AMD may have misled about the severity of the vulnerability. AMD had warned investors in a filing with the SEC late last month that the company was subject to claims related to exploits.

In addition to all of this, AMD began implementing firmware fixes for its CPUs a few days after the vulnerabilities were revealed, not without first saying that its processors were unaffected.
