Nvidia's market share grew to 72.92% in the third quarter of 2019 in the GPU segment, reducing AMD's market share by 5% from the second quarter of 2019, reports Jon Peddie Research (JPR).

AMD loses 5% of the GPU market to Nvidia in the third quarter

Both companies recorded massive growth in GPU sales during the quarter, although it seems that Nvidia did so at a much higher rate, which enabled an increase in their share in the third quarter, as almost three out of four graphics cards sold in those three months they came from the green company.

Nvidia gained significantly in the last quarter, managing to increase its market share from 67.92% in the second quarter to 72.92% in the third quarter, entirely at AMD's expense. This occurred despite the launch of the AMD RX 5700 XT, which means that the launch of these AMD models has not been enough to compete at the Nvidia level.

However, it's not all bad news for AMD's Radeon graphics division. The company managed to increase its market share a little since this time last year. It currently represents 27.08% of the market, compared to 25.72% in the third quarter of 2018. So they are a little better than a year ago.

Volume sales for both Nvidia and AMD come largely from mid-range graphics cards, such as the GTX 16 series and RX 500 series. Perhaps the lack of new AMD products in this segment has affected sales., since Nvidia did have different new releases in the GTX 16 series with the Super models.

In the year 2020 a new protagonist in the sector will join, Intel Xe. Intel's discrete graphics cards will launch next year, perhaps in June, and will see a third party enter terrain dominated by Nvidia and AMD for years.
