The market for so-called "semi-personalized" products is deeply rooted in AMD's business strategy. Basically, the company is willing to create specially adapted hardware for a specific area. For example, current Xbox and Playstation APUs are made by AMD. This is a trend that will clearly continue and that is visible in its new SOC designed for Subor and presented at the ChinaJoy convention, which will make use of Ryzen and Vega. Let's see it.

The new SoC that will power the Zhongshan Subor console

The new Chinese console will feature 4 cores and 8 Zen threads in its CPU, with a clock frequency of 3GHz, combined with a Vega GPU with 24 computing units and a 1.3GHz clock, aided by 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

All this is located on a single chip, hence the name "SOC" (System On Chip), and is to some extent comparable to the Intel Core i7-8809G, famous for the use of Radeon Vega M GH graphics from its competitor AMD.. They have a more or less equivalent graph and the same number of cores, although with a higher frequency of the processor in the case of Intel.

“Designing a semi-custom gaming SOC for Subor represents an exciting opportunity for AMD to make our high-performance technologies even more accessible to gamers in China. The new SOC is also a great example of our strategy, where we take our differentiated intellectual property and adapt to meet the specific needs of a customer to create a product that only AMD can deliver. ”

AMD statements in press release

So far, AMD has not used more than 24 CUs combined with a CPU on the same chip, while in the case of Raven Ridge desktop APUs 8 are used in the 2200G and 11 in the 2400G. So even though this product is only going to be used in the Chinese market, it clearly marks the line that AMD wants to follow to expand the capabilities of its integrated graphics with Vega. In addition, with the new manufacturing processes, more components will fit in a single die for the AM4 (desktop) socket, so we are expected to see great advances in AMD APUs for next year.

The Subor console will cost around 630 euros and will be equipped with a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, and will run a modified version of Windows 10.
