Geekbench 4 results for the upcoming release of AMD's Ryzen 7 3800X processor have been uncovered, giving us some performance numbers to compare against the Intel Core i9-9900K. These performance results were discovered by TUM_APISAK on Twitter.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X beats Core i9-9900K

Both the Ryzen 7 3800X and i9-9900K are 8-core, 16-thread processors, making them natural rivals. However, that's where the similarities end. The Ryzen 7 3800X has a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz and a boost clock of 4.5 GHz, while the i9-9900K works with a base clock of 3.6 GHz and a boost clock of 5 GHz. On paper, the i9-9900K should have the upper hand, but we know it's not always the case in the hardware world.

An important aspect to note about the Ryzen 7 3800X result is that the test system was using DDR4-2133 memory. Since third-generation Ryzen have been supporting DDR4-3200 memory since launch, slower memory performance will obviously limit chip performance. In order to make a fairer comparison, a result in which the Core i9-9900K is using the same memory speed DDR4-2133 was used as a reference in Geekbench 4.

With this level playing field, it appears that AMD is catching up to Intel in single core performance. However, the Core i9-9900K is still 1.09% faster here, according to leaked figures.

Multi-core results, on the other hand, are in AMD's favor. The Ryzen 7 3800X outperforms the Core i9-9900K by up to 4.95% on multicore workloads.

The Core i9-9900K outperforms the Ryzen 7 3800X when paired with DDR4-2666 memory, Intel's official memory speed. The Core i9-9900K performs approximately 14.48% and 0.56% faster in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. Basically, what this tells us is that Geekbench 4 is sensitive to memory speeds.

It is too early to declare the Ryzen 7 3800X the winner. We will have to wait for more tests in addition to Geekbench to find out.
