We're less than two weeks away from the official debut of AMD's highly anticipated 7nm Zen 2-based Ryzen processors and today we have a new leak of a mysterious 12-core, 24-wire chip seen in the UserBenchmark database.

Hints emerge of a new 12-core Ryzen superior to the Threadripper 1920X

The chip seen in the popular database would be an engineering sample of an upcoming AMD 12-core variant, more precisely the Ryzen 3000 variant.

It is crucial to note that this is an engineering sample and that it has been combined with a new motherboard, code AMD Qogir-MTS . It has a relatively low clock speed, as expected from an engineering sample. It runs on a 3.4 GHz base clock and a 3.7 GHz Turbo. Production units are expected to operate at significantly higher clock speeds than those seen here.

1600MHz DDR4 memory and 500GB hard drive have been used. Although, that's not really the interesting part. The most interesting part is how this chip compares to AMD's 12-core Ryzen Threadripper 1920X. And it's actually a little bit faster, especially in floating point operations, despite having a slightly lower clock speed and significantly less memory bandwidth.

This is very good news because it means that Zen 2 is bringing significant improvements to the IPC, allowing the new chips to offer better performance per clock.

They all seem to bode well for the new Ryzen 3000 series, which would be announced in a matter of days. We will keep you informed.
