Amd to overtake apple as tsmc's largest 7nm customer in 2020
Table of contents:
Given AMD's track record in 2019, it looks like it will surpass Apple as TSMC's largest 7nm customer. Inside, we tell you everything.
2020 has only just begun and we already have news of this caliber. AMD's strategy in 2019 has been fabulous, achieving a lot of sales and growing in the server sector. Although Apple is one of the most powerful companies in the world, this has not been an obstacle for AMD to overtake it this year.
Second half of 2020
AMD is projected to advance Apple as TSMC's largest 7nm chip customer in the second half of 2020. Mainly, two keys have to do with this:
- The increase in orders for these chips by AMD. Apple's transition to the 5nm node for its A14 processor, clearing AMD at 7nm.
AMD currently implements 7nm chips in Zen 2, Navi 10, and Navi 14 architecture. In fact, I would continue to order from TSMC until the end of life of these architectures. At the same time, it will introduce the new APU " Renoir ", all this without forgetting that in 2020 AMD will use the 7nm + node for Zen 3 and Navi 21.
Not only is there Apple
It will not only surpass Apple, since the customers of TSMC that request 7nm chips the most are HiSilicon (Huawei), Qualcomm and Mediatek, apart from AMD, of course. These companies use this node for smartphone processors or for 4G or 5G modems .
However, AMD is expected to increase orders for these types of chips from TSMC. In early 2020, AMD is expected to scale its orders, increasing to 110, 000 wafers per month. As Apple will migrate at 5nm, TSMC will have more production capacity, being able to ship up to 140, 000 wafers. AMD has not wanted to miss this opportunity, reserving those 30, 000 free wafers left by Apple for its transition.
On the other hand, Qualcomm will change its semiconductor manufacturer, counting on Samsung for the next generation of 7nm EUV chips. In addition, Nvidia will also go to the Korean company for the manufacture of the 7nm EUV chips whose destination will be the next generation of " Ampere " GPUs.
In this way, it is not that AMD has “usurped” the other TSMC clients, but that they have all looked for a way out or have changed their claims:
- Apple changes to 5nm. Qualcomm leaves with Samsung.
Given the situation of Intel with the 14nm chips, AMD has moved smartly.
