If AMD's Ryzen 3000 series has shown us anything, it's that chiplet designs are here to stay for a long season. With Zen 2, AMD offers a fantastic level of scalability without the drawbacks of the company's older designs, the Threadripper and EPYC. We know that the third generation Threadripper will launch this semester, or later, in early 2020.

The first 3rd generation Threadripper has 16 cores and 32 threads

Now, what appears to be a third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processor has hit the UserBenchmark database (thanks to TUM-APISAK ), offering 16 cores and 32 threads in an AMD SP3v2 socket with a four-channel memory configuration. Why do we think this is Zen 2?

Although it is not explicitly stated that this is a part made in Zen 2, we can tell by the latency table compared to a current Threadripper 2950X. This engineering sample has more L3 cache, just like other Zen 2 processors.

The processor offers a base clock speed of 3.6 GHz and an average turbo clock of 4.05 GHz. Although this is not so high, it is worth remembering that this processor seems to be one of the first engineering samples.

With AMD offering a 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X on AM4, it seems unlikely that the company will ship another 16-core model on its TR4 socket, as this would cannibalize its sales on one of the two platforms.

AMD's third-generation Ryzen processors are likely to offer more cores / threads than ever before. We know that up to 64 cores are possible with Zen 2 in AMD's SP3 EPYC socket, which means that designs of up to 64 cores are also possible in TR4. With Zen 2 Threadripper models, 24, 32, 48 and 64 core models are possible. We will keep you informed.
