Amd and nvidia to exam under steamos

The Steam Machines are getting closer so it is interesting to see how the two main manufacturers of GPUs manage to squeeze the performance of their graphics cards under the GNU / Linux operating system. remember that Steam Machines will work under the SteamOS operating system, a GNU / Linux distribution based on the Debian master.
The Phoronix guys have grabbed a total of 22 AMD and Nvidia graphics cards and tested them on the BioShock Infinite, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, DiRT Showdown, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux video games under the SteamOS operating system. obtaining unexpected results for many.
The tests have been done with SteamOS 2.0, based on Debian 8.1 Jessie, and using the GeForce 352.30 and Catalyst 15.9 graphics drivers, the latest version that allows you to use SteamOS.
Here is the complete list of graphics cards used:

Results obtained
The first game is BioShock Infinite which shows a very bad performance of AMD's GPUs in GNU / Linux, so much so that even an old GeForce GTX 460 is superior to the Radeon R9 Fury and the GTX 550Ti is barely below the card with GPU Fiji. It is striking that the Radeon R9 290 is faster than the Radeon R9 Fury.
We move to Metro Last Light Redux and the situation improves for AMD although it is still very worrying, so much so that a GTX 750 manages to outperform the Radeon R9 Fury.
A very similar situation is seen in Metro 2033 Redux where again the GTX 750 outperforms the much superior Radeon R9 Fury.
We move on to Dirt Showdown, a game where the AMD architecture has always worked very well and we see a very strange situation. It is not only that Nvidia works much better and a GTX 960 wets a Radeon R9 Fury's ear, but inside the AMD itself you can see nonsense like seeing a Radeon HD 7950 as its fastest card over the Radeon R9 Fury.
We finally come to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and nothing improves for Sunnyvale's. Again Nvidia far above with the GTX 950 showing faster than the Radeon R9 Fury.
conclusion
AMD certainly has a lot of hard work ahead of it if it wants to be an alternative to Nvidia under SteamOS and Valve's Steam machines. With what we have seen in this article we can affirm that AMD does not exist in GNU / Linux today, at least for those who want to use the equipment for gaming.
WE RECOMMEND YOUomb Raider available for LinuxIn addition to being much inferior to Nvidia we see that within the cards of the AMD itself there are very strange situations such as seeing a Radeon HD 7950 showing superior performance to the Radeon R9 Fury, a clear indication that AMD drivers for the Tux operating system are really very green.
