If you're not a fan of blower-style GPU coolers, AMD has good news: You're ditching them for your next generation of Radeon graphics cards based on its RDNA 2 architecture.

Goodbye to 'Blowwer' fans on the next generation of ADM Radeon graphics cards

AMD will completely change the cooling system to a cooling solution with axial fans, just as Nvidia did when it launched its GeForce RTX series, and later with its Turing-based GeForce GTX cards.

When it comes to GPU coolers, fans have the advantage of expelling hot air directly out of the case, as the air exhaust is located in the expansion slot. However, generally speaking, they do not cool as well as axial fan solutions, and are often noisier.

AMD had been reluctant to switch to the same cooling style that its hardware partners use in their own custom designs (although there have been exceptions). That will change now.

AMD showed a photo of an updated cooling design on one of the slides it showed at the Financial Analyst Day presentation.

There were a lot of slides during the 3 and a half hour presentation, and it would have been easy to lose sight of the GPU capture, especially since AMD didn't say anything about it. However, the image was sent to Reddit, where AMD Vice President and CEO of Radeon Business Unit Scott Herkelman confirmed the change.

“There will be no blower fans for next generation players. So you're right, ” Herkelman wrote, with a wink to make it clear.

If the presentation slide image is accurate, next-gen Radeon cards will go with a dual-fan cooling solution. We will keep you informed.
