Antec, leader in the manufacture of boxes, liquid cooling and high-end power supplies, sent us just a few weeks ago one of its new power supplies: Antec HCG-850M with modular hybrid wiring system, 135mm fan and 80 certification. Plus Bronze.

We appreciate the trust placed by the Antec team for the transfer of the product:

Antec HCG-850M

Antec makes an excellent presentation with a compact cardboard box. On the cover we find an image of the power supply, the model name, the modular cable management and which incorporates a 135mm fan. Already on the back it indicates all the most important specifications and features.

Once we open the box we find a fairly complete bundle:

  • Antec HCG-850M power supply. Modular Cable Kit Set Instruction Manual Power Cord and Screws for Installation

We have a power supply with a standard ATX design with the usual measurements in this format of 86 mm x 150 mm x 170 mm and a considerable weight close to 2.1kg. Its design is quite aggressive, like all Gamer series of the brand, with black and red predominating.

Among its technical characteristics it has the 80 PLUS BRONZE efficiency that guarantees good performance, quality components and a core manufactured by the prestigious Seasonic brand, which bears the same as the M12II series. As expected, it is compatible with the new platforms Intel Haswell-E (LGA 2011-3), Skylake (LGA 1151) and AMD FM2 + and AM3 +.

The source divides its power into two + 12V rails at 40 amps each, providing a total count of 960w . The design on both sides is exactly the same… with the model sticker.

While in the rear area we have a “ metal mesh ” panel that improves internal cooling, the power input and a switch to turn the power supply on / off.

When we are in the upper area we find an ultra quiet 135mm fan with white LEDs. It is the ADDA ADN512UB-A90LD model that starts its rotation at 800 RPM and depending on the needs of the system it can reach up to 2500 RPM, it has an air flow of 100 CFM and maximum loudness close to 40 dB / A, as it was expected is PWM.

Antec is very clear that efficiency and protection is one of its points different from other brands. Incorporates the full range of CircuitShield industrial- grade protection:

  • Overcurrent protection (OCP). Overvoltage protection (OVP). Undervoltage protection (UVP). Short circuit protection (SCP). Overvoltage protection (OPP). and current closure (SIP).

Includes a button to turn on / off the fan LEDs

Modular hybrid management

Cable management is hybrid, that is, it presents the base power cables as fixed and the SATA / PCI Express / etc.. modular cables. Meshing is quite accurate for the price range and I really like the variety of wiring. This power supply is designed to mount up to 2 high-end graphics cards.

The cable set consists of:

  • 1 x 24 (20 + 4) - pin1 x 8 (4 + 4) -pin ATX12V / EPS12V4 x 8 (6 + 2) -pin PCI-E9 x SATA6 x Molex1 x Floppy Drive.

Final words and conclusion

Antec has returned to manufacture a very interesting product for any computer consumer. The HCG-850M power supply meets all the requirements that a high-end product can be asked for: 80 PLUS Bronze certification, silent fan, quality components and protections against any anomaly.

I would like to emphasize safety and security in a power supply. Personally, it is the most important component of your computer, because it is in charge of supplying each one of the components of your computer, Antec has incorporated CircuitShield technology that protects excess current, surges, undervoltages, short circuits, surges and current surges.

We have compared its performance to the Antec Edge 750W and the performance is quite similar. Obtaining performance from high-end power supplies that increase their value by more than 50 euros. Another point to highlight is its 135mm fan which is quite quiet, since it runs at 800 RPM, although when it is at maximum power (with two graphics cards and overclock) it reaches up to 2500 RPM.

In short, if you want a quality source that does not exceed 120 euros, the Antec HCG850M is the ideal one since it allows you to mount two graphics cards, an i7 processor and apply overclock. I don't want to forget about the guarantee and 24/7 support that the company offers. It is already available in Spanish stores.
