ARM continues to evolve its graphics for smarpthones with the intention of getting closer and closer to what is offered by Qualcomm's powerful Adreno, the latest release from the British company are the Mali-G52 and Mali-G31.

New Mali-G52 and Mali-G31

Mali-G52 and Mali-G31 are ARM's most modern GPUs, they are intended to offer an excellent level of performance while maintaining high energy efficiency and low development and production costs. ARM is the third contender in this market behind Qualcomm and Imagination, although Apple has recently joined with its own GPU designs.

The Mali-G52 and Mali-G31 graphics will be used by a large number of SoCs for mobile devices, as examples we can cite the MediaTek, the Exynos, the Kirin and even the Xiaomi Surge that are giving their first hits on the market. Mali-G52 is the more powerful of the two with a configuration of between one and four graphic cores, it will be the perfect complement for ARM's advanced Cortex A75 CPU cores. Mali-G52 promises a 30% increase in "performance density" compared to the previous core a G51 at the same manufacturing node, on the other hand, energy efficiency gets a modest 15% increase.

If we go down one step we find the Mali-G31 that can include from one to three cores, this graphics processor aims to offer an exceptionally good price-performance ratio in mid-range devices. In this case it will be accompanied by the Cortex A55 CPU cores with great energy efficiency. It will be 20% smaller than a G51 MP2 while offering the same performance.

Mali graphics are not able to match the performance of the best Adreno cores, although in exchange they are present in much cheaper processors and smartphones, we will have to wait to see what the new designs are capable of.
