The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is the most popular graphics card among video game players, as it is an excellent solution with very low power consumption and excellent performance in 1080p resolution, that is, the most popular among gamers. To make it even better, new versions with 9 Gbps memories that improve bandwidth were announced, an example of this is the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps whose in-depth analysis we offer today.
Will the price increase be justified? Or will it be worth acquiring the normal version? All this and much more in our analysis!
We thank Gigabyte Aorus for trusting the product for their analysis:
Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps technical features
Unboxing and design
Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps comes to us with the usual presentation of the brand, the graphics card comes with a cardboard box in the brand's corporate colors. On the front we see a high-quality image and its most important features such as 9 GHz memories, its best quality custom design and compatibility with DirectX 12 stand out.
While on the back and sides all its most important features and specifications are detailed in several languages including Spanish.
We open the box and find the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps very well protected by high-quality foam pieces that prevent it from moving during transport, the bundle includes the following components:
- Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9Gbps graphics card.Manual and quick guide.
We are already focusing on the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps, as we can see it is a fully customized graphics card to get the most out of its core. This means that both the heatsink and the PCB have been custom made by Gigabyte with the best components on the market.
We already entered the specifications of the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps, we found a Pascal GP106 core manufactured in 16 nm and consisting of 1280 CUDA Cores at a maximum frequency of 1, 860MHz, all under the Pascal architecture that is tremendously efficient with the use of energy so the TDP of the card remains at a very tight 120W, that is to say that we are facing a lighter.
This graphic core is linked to a total of 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory with a 192-bit interface and a speed of 9000 MHz, which translates into a bandwidth of 216 GB / s and excellent card performance. in 1080p resolution or even in 2K although sacrificing graphic detail.
Now is the time to focus on the heatsink ! This consists of a dense aluminum radiator that is crossed by two copper heatpipes of the best quality, these have the function of absorbing the heat generated by the GPU during its operation and distributing it over the entire surface of the aluminum radiator for its dissipation. The radiator is made up of three pieces and a multitude of fine aluminum fins, with the aim of maximizing the heat exchange surface and thereby maximizing the cooling capacity.
It is accompanied by two excellent 90mm fans, which are responsible for generating the necessary air flow. These are optimally designed to generate the highest airflow possible with very low noise. We can see that the fan blades have a very elaborate design to do their best.
Rear blackplate view.
An auxiliary 8-pin connector provides the necessary power, this connector can give up to 150W in addition to the 75W that the PCI Express slot can give , we therefore have a total of 225W, a figure that is well above 120- 130W consumed by the GeForce GTX 1060 so we have plenty of room for overclocking and the best stability is guaranteed.
Finally we highlight its video outputs in the form of HDMI 2.0, DVI and three DisplayPort 1.4 along with the highly customizable software-based Gigabyte RGB Fusion lighting system.
PCB and internal components
To remove the heatsink we have to remove the 4 main screws and two additional ones anchored in the VRM area. It has a total of 2 heatpipes and several thermalpads in charge of acceptably cooling all the components.
Once we have seen all the details of the heatsink, we will analyze the PCB. First of all we highlight its VRM with 6 + 1 power phases, which are more than enough for this fresh and efficient chip. A level of design and components used (Ultra Durable) will offer us great quality.
Both the VRM components and the memory chips make use of thermal pads to achieve the best contact with the heatsink and thus improve its cooling. Everything looks great! We do not give you more can and we start with the good.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:
- 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Time Spy.Heaven Superposition.VRMARK.
All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.
What are we looking for in the tests?
First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:
FRAMES BY SECONDS |
|
Frames for Seconds. (FPS) |
Gameplay |
Less than 30 FPS | Limited |
30 ~ 40 FPS | Playable |
40 ~ 60 FPS | Good |
Greater than 60 FPS | Fairly Good or Excellent |
Synthetic benchmarks
This time, we've narrowed it down to three tests as we consider them to be more than enough as synthetic performance tests.
Game Testing
We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.
Testing in Full HD games
Testing in 2K games
Software and Overclock
AORUS GRAPHICS ENGINE software is quite simple and intuitive. We like it because it comes standard with four default profiles: Overclock Mode, Gaming Mode, Silent Mode and User Mode. The latter allows us to manually overclock and perform very well. Additionally, it allows us to customize our RGB lighting with various effects and a palette of 16.8 million colors.
Overclocking has been pretty good with a +90 MHz rise in the core and + 50 MHz in the memories. Although we can rush it much more, have we reached up to 2088 MHz without any problem? The best is small but hardly increases consumption and temperatures.
Temperature and consumption
The temperatures of the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps have been quite good. At rest we have obtained 37ºC, while when we give it wax while playing we do not exceed 60ºC in any case. While overclocked it goes up to 42ºC at rest and 63ºC at maximum power.
Consumption is for the entire team *
Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently, it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 40W at rest and 197W playing with an Intel i7-8700K processor. While with the slight overclock that we have made it goes up to 47W and 214W respectively.
Final words and conclusion about Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps
Gigabyte does a pricey wash and launches its 6 GB Aorus GTX 1060 with the new 9 Gbps GDDR5 memory. This new card comes equipped with a very efficient heatsink, which is made up of three 90mm fans and a radiator with two heatpipes. Our final impressions have been pretty good, although it's a step behind the Gigabyte top-of-the-range series heatsink.
In our tests we have been able to verify that it is an ideal graphics card for Full HD and 2K resolutions. But we do not see improvement over the normal version. That is, if you are considering acquiring it and find a normal 6 GB model with a palpable difference… It is preferable to save yourself that money and improve your PC: cooling, SSD…?
Currently we can find it in online stores for a price of 349 euros. Without a doubt, the Aorus GTX 1060 6GB 9 Gbps is a 100% recommended purchase both to upgrade your PC and to mount a new desktop computer. What do you think?
