After testing the company's flagship… It is time to introduce you to the powerful and precious Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G that bears many resemblances to its older sister Extreme. But there are quite a few differences!

Do you want to know more about its performance, sound and power? Don't miss our full review! Here we go!

We thank Gigabyte Aorus for trusting us with the product for its review:

Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G technical characteristics

Design and unboxing

Aorus bets on a safe staging: compact box, standard size and combining the colors black and orange on its cover. In the lower area we find the certifications of RGB Fusion, Windforce heatsink, VR Link and that it has 11GB GDDR5X.

While in the rear area they detail us with all the most important technical specifications. We already anticipated that we will find slight differences to the Extreme edition. We continue!

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G.CD with driver and software. Quick guide. SATA thief for two PCI power connections.

The Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme graphics card uses the most powerful chip of the moment: Pascal GP102 which It is manufactured in 16 nm FinFET and with a reduced size of 314 mm2. It is a chip that incorporates a total of 3, 584 CUDA cores in the top-of-the-range version.

It is complemented by a total of 224 texturing units (TMUs) and 88 crawling units (ROPs). The Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G operates at frequencies on its 1, 569 MHz GPU in base mode that goes up to 1, 683 MHz under Turbo Boost 3.0 for spectacular performance. Also ditch with a second overclock profile that allows us to select 1594 MHz base and 1708 MHz going up to Boost.

Like the GTX 1080 “just” incorporates the new memory GDDR5X. These run at a frequency of 11010 MHz and we can tighten them a little more through overclocking. That is, in total we have 11 GB GDDR5X with a 352 bit bus interface . When did we say that we were going to have a lack of memory? hehe

The cooling system is the best we have ever tried. It has a Windforce heatsink that is made up of three 100 mm double ball fans that improve the fluid and flow of the entire system. Underneath we have a large aluminum grill along with 6 heatpipes that form the copper structure that goes directly to the memory and the Pascal chip.

We leave you a quick view of the back backplate. Very pretty! Oh wait. We see a small block of copper (it is smaller than its sister Extreme) that is in charge of efficiently cooling the chipset. It really is a support that scratches us between 1 to 2ºC. All we go down, good is!

It is so traced that they even share dimensions: 29.3 x 14.2 x 5.5 mm and it weighs more than 1 kg. It also has the " Fan Stop " functionality, that is, it offers 0DB in noise, which means that all the fans are at rest, until the 3D load starts, which are automatically activated.

As we always recommend in charts that have a total of three SLOTS, It is important that it is well separated from other cards and if we mount an SLI with them, we give you two tips: that they do not collide with each other and have a motherboard with a very good layout in PCI Express connections. Otherwise… a more basic model with double SLOT or two Founders Edition would be interesting. In the third image we can see the connectors for the SLI HB bridge.

The classic customizable RGB Fusion lighting system with 16.8 million colors could not be missing. It allows us to configure effects and many options within your software. Both the front of the graphics card and the back, top and backplate (logo area) illuminate.

As we can see, it incorporates two 8 + 8-pin PCI Express connections to give a good power supply to the graphics card.

Finally, we detail the rear connections made up of:

  • 1 DVI connection. 3 DisPlayPORT connections. 2 HDMI connections + 1 connection on the other side of the PCB to use VR Link technology.

PCB and some details to consider

Once we remove the four screws located between the copper block and the other three screws located in the supply phases. We can see the large heatsink that it incorporates.

As we can see, it includes a total of 5 copper heatpipes, a quality thermal pad and a copper surface to cool both the chip and the memories. Some images of the PCB masterpiece .

The Gigabyte GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming features a custom PCB with 12 + 2 power phases and Ultra Durable components. We miss the extreme protection that prevents any liquid leakage from affecting the graphics card. This is a very, very important difference to keep in mind.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 - 40 FPS Playable
40 - 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Synthetic benchmarks

On this occasion, we have reduced it to several very specific tests, since we consider that they are more than sufficient as synthetic performance tests.

  • Haven Benchmark 4.0.3DMARK Fire Strike.3DMARK Fire Strike Ultra.Time SpyHeaven Superposition

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. Since we make an effort, it is consistent with the level of the website and that of our readers.

Game testing

Overclocking

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

It is curious that we have obtained the same result as when we have tried the Extreme version. Where the chip has been stable and that thanks to its 12 + 2 power phases we have great performance.

We have been on the verge of reaching up to 2.1 GHz, which is where all this series of graphics cards are arriving. What is the improvement? After our tests just 1-2 FPS so it is not a brutal improvement either. As it comes standard it is more than enough to work with any game to the fullest. Finally some views of the Aorus management software. Very well built?

Temperature and consumption

The temperatures of the Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G could not have been better. At rest we have obtained 35ºC since the fans are in passive mode until some game is activated and the temperature rises. While playing we do not exceed 68 ºC in any case.

Another of the great advantages of this range is the reduced consumption that we have in the equipment. Until very recently it was unthinkable to have high-end graphics and get 54W at idle and 335W playing with an Intel i7-7700K processor. While overclocked it goes up to 62W at rest and 390XW at maximum performance.

Final words and conclusion about Aorus GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme

The Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11G is a high-end graphics card that will offer us everything we need: first-class design, high-quality components, silence, overclocking and, above all, durability .

In our tests we have verified that it maintains almost an identical PCB to that of the Extreme version: 12 + 2 power phases, an almost traced heatsink and Japanese high resistance components. Our tests show once again that Gigabyte with the Aorus series aims very high in the market.

What are the differences compared to the Extreme version? Basically we can summarize it in the rear copper block and the lower frequencies in both profiles. Two of the first ones we do not see very relevant, but the third if you have liquid refrigeration surely you would like it to have.

Currently we can buy it in Spanish online stores for a price of 849 euros. The difference with the Xtreme version is 20 euros, it all depends if those three features detailed above interest you. It seems to us one of the best graphics cards on the market.
