The AORUS family of gaming mice has grown with this new AORUS M4. Some time ago we brought you his younger brother, the M2, and now it is the turn for this new creation. And the truth is that it promises a lot, with an ambidextrous and minimalist design to adapt or all kinds of hands and grips in palm and claw, and underneath a Pixart 3988 optical sensor with 6, 400 native DPI. The M4 will light the way for us with a triple RGB Fusion lighting zone and complete customization for all its buttons.

AORUS M2 technical characteristics
Unboxing
The presentation that this AORUS M4 brings is very similar to that of its younger brother, as it is always a small flexible cardboard box with measures very adjusted to what the equipment itself is.
This box is completely painted in the manufacturer's colors, namely orange and gray. A large color image of the equipment with its lighting has been placed on the central face, and the key characteristics are detailed on the back with the help of a couple of photos in the form of an outline.
The purchase bundle only consists of the AORUS M4 mouse itself and an instruction manual, why do we want more? In addition, the mouse works via wired USB, so we have the corresponding cable integrated into it in a fixed way and with a textile mesh.
Design
Like other teams of the brand, the AORUS M4 is a mouse specially built to play, not for nothing is the gaming division of Gigabyte the one behind the mouse. And the truth is that it reminds us a lot of the M2 in the design philosophy that the brand has followed, with completely rounded and sober lines, although notoriously more aggressive. This we notice quickly when you look at its back, which ends in a radical cut, a front with lighting or its rubber cuffs and with a fluted futuristic style.
It is still a fairly low mouse, but also very long, specifically we have measures of 122 mm long, 66 mm wide and 40 mm high. Perhaps you already notice it from the photograph, but it is oriented, in my opinion, to be used by the palm grip and glaw grip, for the fact that it is always very long and short. The advantage of this is that the movement will be more stable due to having a much lower center of gravity, and also a weight of only 98 grams will greatly facilitate our work.
Let's take a detailed shot of the upper area to see that the entire AORUS M4 case is made of hard plastic. In fact, it presents a slightly rough finish to obtain a better grip, and it is for this reason that we see it in a matte finish.
Well, its two main buttons are integrated into the upper case and have been mounted on two Japanese Omron switches that support more than 50 million clicks. In fact, they are relatively hard buttons, with practically no travel and a very muffled click and quite pleasant for my taste.
The wheel cannot be missing either, with a medium size and enough output from the main plane, we will be able to handle it quite easily thanks to the thick ribbed rubber coating it has. The shooting is quite silent and with the jumps not too well defined, something that is also appreciated. It goes without saying that, under it, there is also the typical button and lighting for this area.
And we finish with the button for the selection of DPI levels, which is small enough and hidden so as not to press it by accident. It will provide us with a total of 4 DPI jumps that we can configure from the software that we will see later.
It seems that we have made a mirror image, but they are the two sides of the AORUS M4. They are exactly the same, not for nothing is an ambidextrous mouse. In both areas we have a configuration of two fairly small navigation buttons we must say and located just below the edge that joins the two housings.
This means that we will have them very close to the thumb of the hand that we are going to use it, and away from the little finger that holds the outer side. Which allows us to press them quite safely and never accidentally, they are also relatively hard and with longer travel than the main ones.
The covering of the side cuffs has a thin layer of ribbed rubber so that we can take it more comfortably than if we had hard plastic. Being these fists tucked in, it makes a mouse narrower than it seems a priori, and very comfortable.
With these two photos, we take the opportunity to indicate that in the lower area of the front we have RGB lighting between those small teeth that we see, and also in the area of the AORUS falcon logo on the back of the mouse.
A good detail that I see is the fact of having the cable connection a few millimeters tucked in, in this way we will protect it from shocks and curves that end up breaking the cable. Finally, the rear area looks quite high, ending the curve very soon, which we will immediately notice when placing our hand on it, because it will tend to stay higher.
We finish the part of the design by observing the three Teflon-coated (PTFE) legs of this AORUS M4 that will allow us to move it around the surfaces. Its rather small size in all of them, although we trust that they will not take off and wear out after having made a few kilometers.
Optical sensor
Also in this area we have the AORUS M4 sensor. It is, of course, a Pixart 3988 optical sensor that is capable of working at a native resolution of 6, 400 DPI. It may not seem like much to many, but we are going to get very fast movements up to 4K resolutions and even higher.
Remember that DPI is not only the important thing about a sensor. For example, this sensor supports accelerations of up to 50G and speeds of up to 200 IPS. This means that it will capture in detail the displacement even in very fast movements, superior to what our hand can do. The system will be assisted by a 32-bit ARM processor with a polling rate of 1000 Hz, although we can also set it to 125 and 500 Hz.
The case is that we can configure this resolution through the AORUS software in steps of 50 to 50 DPI and adjust them in 4 different levels, which we can select with the upper button. We would have liked to be allowed a setting of 1 DPI to 1 DPI, but it is reserved for higher performance sensors. In fact, all the configuration we make in our software, we can store it on the mouse to take it anywhere and always behave the same.
software
This AORUS M4 also supports customization through AORUS Engine and Gigabyte RGB fusion software, so let's give you a little overview and see your options.
Starting with the software that allows us to manage lighting, we don't have too many secrets in it. We just need to have the mouse connected and install the software. It will automatically be detected and its three lighting zones will be identified by means of a rainbow gradient.
We can choose between the different animations implemented in the RGB Fusion 2.0 technology of the brand, along with the brightness power and the speed of the animation. We will have the ability to create multiple lighting profiles to use when needed.
Regarding the AORUS Engine program, we recommend its use, since having the customizable buttons will be a great tool to complete the mouse. Its use is extremely simple, going to the MOUSE section, we will find all the configuration options for the buttons. In the drop-down list we will be able to select not only typical actions, but we will also have multimedia functions and even the creation of Macros.
In the lower right corner we have a small list of options where we can select LEDs, to open RGB Fusion, or the top option to go to the sensor configuration. In this case, we will only have the possibility to modify the four DPI levels of the sensor (ignore the values shown, because they are generic), and the mouse polling rate. I see as positive not having an option to help precision, since it only introduces acceleration in the displacement and its utility is scarce.
Grip and sensitivity tests
I always consider it interesting for the user to be able to tell my opinion regarding the sensations that the AORUS M4 mouse has left me in terms of grip and use. Previously it has been commented that it is a gaming-oriented equipment, due to its low weight and its excellent versatile design.
This design will allow me to hold it quite comfortably with the full palm, I always like to hold them with slightly arched fingers, in claw type, but in this case I am more like with the whole hand supported. It is a mouse not very high and with some very long main buttons forward, and it is the main reason.
I like mice that have a back curve that ends completely down a little bit more, unlike the AORUS M4, which ends up high. Like a 110 x 190mm hand like mine, I find it more comfortable to separate my hand from this back area and place it directly on the ground. Obviously they are my preferences, not yours.
In any case, it is a mouse that I liked more than the little brother M2. Its design is more ergonomic and adapts better to the curves of the hand and to the two main claw and palm grips. Very good grips to keep it under control and well grasped and very accessible buttons for left or right handed. It has also been very nice to have relatively hard switches with such a short travel.
Let us now go to see the typical tests we perform on the AORUS M4 sensor
- Variance in movement (Acceleration): The procedure consists of putting the mouse in an enclosure that allows about 4 cm of movement. Then we move the equipment from one side to another and at different speeds. In this way the line that we are painting in Paint will take a measure, if the lines vary in length, it will mean that it has acceleration, otherwise they will not have it. In the AORUS M2 review we saw that there was no acceleration, and in this superior model, obviously there is no trace. In fact, we have repeated the tests in different DPI settings and the result is always a line of the same size moving slow or fast. Pixel Skipping: Performing slow movements, and at different DPI in 4K resolution, pixel skipping is not seen in any of the settings. The more DPI, the more difficult it will be to navigate pixel by pixel, but thanks to the four DPI modes we have, we can adjust the speed to our liking. The sensor performs well on mats and on wood. Tracking: testing in games or by selecting and dragging windows, the movement is correct without experiencing accidental jumps or plane changes. With the capacity of 200 in / s and 50 G, it will support movements much faster than our hands can carry out. This will be crucial for FPS games where sharp turns need precision. Performance on surfaces: It has worked correctly on hard surfaces such as wood, metal and of course on mats of different types. The performance in opaque and translucent crystals is also correct. In this mouse we do not have a software calibration system.
Final words and conclusion about AORUS M4
We come to the end of yet another review with the AORUS M4 that has been with us for a few days. Undoubtedly a mouse that any user gets used to very quickly, due to its simple design at first glance but that gives us great comfort in any size of hand, right-handed and left-handed.
It is made of plastic with matte black and slightly rough, with very comfortable ribbed rubber grips. The lighting section is also very wide, with three zones and RGB Fusion 2.0 technology and the possibility of managing it by software.
Like its eight buttons, it can be programmed with the AORUS Engine and storing the onboard configuration. Japanese Omron buttons have been used for the main clicks, with minimal travel and a medium-hard click which I really liked.

Regarding the performance of the sensor, we have practically no objection, because all the tests have passed perfectly and is completely accurate and very fast. We could ask for an option for its calibration on surfaces and to be able to modify the DPI 1 to 1 instead of 50 in 50, but it is not something that lowers the quality of the product.
And to finish this review, we have to talk about price, although for now we only know that it will be presented at a cost of about $ 39.99, we will soon know its final price in Europe, but it is emerging as an excellent option for advanced gaming players with a good quality / price ratio.
