Arm announces the new gpus mali 800 series
ARM today announced its new series of Mali 800 GPUs arriving to succeed the current Mali 700 series. Mali 800 will have a total of three models at launch: T860, T830 and T820. All three GPUs are expected to debut in the new SoCs that will arrive well into 2015.
The new Mali 800 series is based on the same Midgars architecture used in the previous Mali 700 and 600 series, ARM has focused on optimizing its architecture to achieve greater energy efficiency while delivering high performance, and has also introduced compatibility with OpenGL ES 3.1 and Direct 3D 11.1 that was not present in Mali 700.
The Mali T860 GPU is the most powerful and capable of the three, it consists of a total of 16 cores and is 45% more efficient than the current Mali T628 using the same configuration and the same manufacturing process. It is the only one of the new GPUs to offer support for Direct 3D 11.1, it also supports OpenCL 1.2 and the Android extension pack.
The Mali T830 and T820 GPUs offer 50% higher efficiency with the same die size as the Mali T622 with the same configuration and manufacturing process. They have a maximum of 4 cores and only support Direct 3D 9.3, OpenGL ES 3.1, support for the Android extension pack and OpenCL 1.2 are optional on these models.
