technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

ASRock X370 Killer SLI It is protected in a standard black cardboard box that quickly tells us which model we are dealing with. Among its certifications we find SLI support, compatible with AMD Ryzen 3.5, and 7 processor and suitable for virtual reality glasses. In the rear area we find all the most important specifications and characteristics of the product.

Once we open the box we find excellent protection and a very complete bundle:

  • ASRock X370 Killer SLI motherboard Back plate. Instruction manual and quick guide. CD disk with drivers. SATA Cable sets. Screw to connect M.2 disk. SLI HB bridge.

The ASRock X370 Killer SLI is manufactured with a PCB that follows the classic scheme: black and white. This set will combine very well with any component of our new PC. As expected, the motherboard has an ATX form factor and reaches dimensions of 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm, so there is no surprise in this regard.

Rear view of the motherboard, for the most curious.

ASRock has included a large heatsink to cool the chipset and VRM system of this motherboard, the heatsink on the chipset that includes features RGB LED lighting. Regarding the internal technical characteristics of its components, we find a total of 8 + 4 "Super Alloy" phases that are capable of offering up to 60A of electrical power. It is also accompanied by Nichicon 12K Platinum capacitors and a reinforced PCB. Nothing to envy to higher-end motherboards

It has available 4 DDR4 RAM memory sockets compatible with up to 64 GB with speed from 2133 MHz to +3200 MHz with overclocking with AMD's DDR4-AMP profile. As expected, the memories will work with dual channel technology so that we can get all the performance of the advanced AMD Ryzen processors and their Zen micro-architecture. Although little by little they are getting more compatibility thanks to the BIOS with AGESA.

The ASRock X370 Killer SLI offers us two PCIe 3.0 to x16 sockets so we will have no problem configuring a Quad CrossFire or SLI system with two graphics cards. In addition, we have a total of four PCI Express 2.0 x16 Slots with x1 mode.

Regarding storage, it has two M.2 NVMe slots that support the following measures 2242/2260/2280/22110 with speed x4 / x2 and x1. An ideal solution if we combine it with a SATA SSD storage disk. It also allows us to RAID 0.1.5.

On top of the standard storage connections it has 6 SATA III 6 GB / s ports so that we can connect enough internal storage devices. Some people prefer to have 8 ports, but considering the M.2 slots they are more than enough.

We continue with a top quality HD 7.1 sound system compatible with Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 3 and which is made up of the Realtek ALC1220 codec. This sound system includes Nichicon capacitors, a TI NE5532 amplifier of 120dB for top range headphones of 600 Ohm and of course it has a separate section of the PCB to avoid interference. Its connectors are gold plated to improve contact and includes RGB LED lighting.

The rear connections come to meet the needs of most users. It has:

  • 2 PS / 21 keyboard and mouse ports HDMI connection 1 USB 3.1 type A1 x USB 3.1 Type-C6 USB 3.0 ports 1 network RJ45 connection HD audio connectors: Rear speaker / Center / Bass / Line-in / Front speaker / Microphone (3.5mm gold plated jacks)

To check the stability of AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor and motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and air cooling. The graphics that we have used is an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a monitor of 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440 and 3840 x 2160.

BIOS

We had not tested an ASRock motherboard for a long time and of course, the evolution is more than evident. What we demanded years ago, has already been rectified: fluidity and periodic updates are already a fact.

We have been very attentive in this release of AM4 and ASRock along with ASUS have been the ones that have released the most BETA phase BIOS updates, the one that has responded the best to their community and is taking it very seriously

The BIOS allows us to make endless modifications in the face of overclocking, but to be honest, we have not touched it in that aspect because although they are putting the batteries, we use the AMD Ryzen Master application to carry out a correct overclock. It also allows us to customize the speed of the fans, monitor temperatures, update the BIOS online (this was done previously since the Sandy Bridge generation) and activate / deactivate connections. In other words, a very, very stable and complete BIOS. Good job!

Final words and conclusion about ASRock X370 Killer SLI

The ASRock X370 Killer SLI is one of the motherboards to consider when purchasing the AM4 platform from AMD Ryzen. It has 8 + 4 power phases, efficient cooling, a dual SLOT M.2 system, SLI compatibility and a non-aggressive lighting system.

In our tests we have been able to verify that its performance is excellent with any graphics card on the market. After testing the GTX 1080 Ti and an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 with this platform, we couldn't be happier. Especially in 4K settings the level is similar to that of the i7-7700k.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

We really did not find any major drawback to highlight. The same, the heatsink of the X370 chipset could be a little thicker but it does its job perfectly. Another important thing to know is that there are two versions: the normal one (the one we have) and the AC that includes a Wifi connection.

It is currently found in some online stores in Spain for a price from 172.50 euros. Which makes it one of the best options on the market when buying a six-core AMD Ryzen 5 processor or an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7.
