In an interview with Bit-tech, Andrew Wu of Asus ROG has made statements that will reignite controversy over the incompatibility of Coffee Lake processors with the motherboards of the Z270 platform.

Compatibility would be limited to Coffee Lake CPUs with a maximum of 6 cores

Andrew Wu claims that compatibility of the Z270 platform with Coffee Lake processors would not have been impossible after all. Andrew Wu explained that it depends on Intel's decision. He mentions that Asus' own engineers could make their Z270 motherboards compatible with Coffee Lake although for this they would need an ME update and a BIOS update, ultimately confirming that Intel has blocked compatibility in some way.

It seems like the different pinout doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of Coffee Lake's current line-up: CPU socket and platform, as designed with Z270, could have handled the increase in core counts and loads power. However, the question gets darker with Intel's ability to launch an 8-core CPU for the Z370 platform, that particular number of cores might definitely be too much for the Z270's power delivery.

With a polite assumption, Intel could have allowed Coffee Lake compatibility on Z270 motherboards with up to 6-core processors, but would need the new Z370 platform to enable Coffee Lake-based 8-core chip operation.

Recall that the Z270 platform went on sale at the beginning of the year along with the Kaby Lake processors, so we are talking about motherboards that have not even a year of life yet and will not be compatible with future generations of processors.
