We had very few motherboards left to analyze from the AM4 socket and we have finally been able to test the Asus Crosshair VI Extreme with 12 power phases, extraordinary dissipation, top-notch wireless connection and one of the best BIOS we have been able to taste.

Are you ready to see this piece of review? Be comfortable! Let's start!

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus Crosshair VI Extreme technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Asus Crosshair VI Extreme is offered in the usual presentation of the manufacturer's ROG series motherboards, it comes to us presented in a large box and with the characteristic color of this range that is none other than Red. On its cover we find the Republic of Gamers logo, in large letters the model and all the certifications that support this excellent motherboard.

Already in the back we have all the most important technical characteristics detailed in several languages including Cervantes.

Inside we find the following bundle

  • Asus Crosshair VI Extreme motherboard. Rear hood. Instruction manual. Quick guide. CD disk with drivers. SATA cable set. Screw to connect M.2 disk. SLI HB ROG cable.

Finally we have before the camera the impressive Asus Crosshair VI Extreme, without a doubt one of the best solutions that we can find on the market with an ATX format, the AM4 socket and an X370 chipset to give full compatibility to AMD Ryzen processors. The design seems really beautiful to us, a matt black color prevails on the PCB and metallic details for all the connections and components to look simply spectacular.

Rear view of the motherboard and its semi-armor.

Asus has mounted a powerful 12-phase VRM power supply that will delight the most overclocked users, of course it has Extreme Engine Digi +, 10K Black Metallic protection in its capacitors , MicroFine Alloy Chokes and Power Block MOSFET of the best quality to guarantee the best stability and excellent durability.

On top are two large aluminum heatsinks that are joined by a copper heatpipe and will help this system to work at lower temperatures, an excellent recipe for the most demanding overclocking.

We have removed these heatsinks so that you can see perfectly everything that is hidden underneath. Additionally, it has an 8 + 4-pin EPS connection.

An important fact is that this fantastic motherboard is compatible with AM3 heatsinks so that we can use them without the need for a special adapter.

Regarding the memory subsystem, we find 4 DDR4 RAM sockets that support a maximum of 64 GB with frequencies of up to 3200 Mhz and compatible with the XMP 2.0 profile. Remember that Ryzen processors have a two-channel memory controller so it will continue to work in dual-chanel despite the fact that we install four modules.

Asus Crosshair VI Extreme is an excellent motherboard for the most demanding video game fans, it has two PCIe 3.0 / 2.0 x16 slots and one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, allowing us to install a maximum of three AMD graphics cards in mode CrossFireX or two from Nvidia in SLI mode, for outstanding performance in the most demanding games. It also has 3 PCIe 2.0 x1 slots

It is also important to know that it incorporates two slots for the M.2 NVMe connection, one of them is 2242/2260/2280 and the other is 2242/2260/2280/22110 to install any disk of this format with a 32GBp / s bus..

We continue to see its storage possibilities with six 6 GB / s SATA III connections with RAID 0.1, 5 and 10 support. And as expected, they have not incorporated the not used SATA Express connection.

We recommend reading our article on: What is the M2 connection and what is it for?

It incorporates a sound card with SupremeFX technology with the new CODEC S1220 that isolates component interference (EMI) much faster and better. It incorporates the best premium Nichicon capacitors, an ES9023 DAC supported by Sonic Radar III and Sonic Studio III software to get the whole game out of it. The great possibilities of this sound engine will give you a great immersion in the battlefield and will offer you an excellent virtual reality experience.

Point out that we have a single 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN connection signed by Intel I211-AT.

As for the rear connections we find the following:

  • 1 x LAN (RJ45) port 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB Type-C1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A6 x USB 3.1 Gen 14 x USB 2.1 S / PDIF optical output 1 x Clear CMOS button 1 x USB BIOS Flashback button 1 x ASUS module 2 × 2 Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac + Bluetooth v4.25 gold plated audio jacks

RGB lighting is in fashion and the Asus Crosshair VI Extreme offers us its complex Asus Aura RGB system that is placed on the VRM heatsink and the chipset heatsink, Asus has achieved a quite attractive finish with various light effects and the possibility of adjust it in 16.8 million colors so that each user can adapt it to their tastes without problems. The board also includes two AURA 4-pin RGB headers connectors to install two additional LED strips.

To check the stability of the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor at 4 GHz, memories at 3200 MHz, the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and we have used a Be Quiet cooling ! Silent Loop 360. The graphics that we have used is an Nvidia GTX1080 Ti, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1920 x 1080 monitor:

BIOS

ASUS is one of the great benchmarks in the BIOS sector: both in stability, possible modifications, periodic updates and monitoring possibilities. We have been fiddling with the BIOS to overclock and we are super happy with the result. Although we prefer at the moment to do it from the software via Windows.

Final words and conclusion about Asus Crosshair VI Extreme

The Asus Crosshair VI Extreme is one of the best, if not the best AM4 socket motherboards. It has Extreme Engine Digi + components, compatible with both AMD Ryzen 3/5/7 processor and 64 GB DDR4 Non-ECC and ECC RAM.

As a complement to the system, it incorporates an 802.11 AC 2 x 2 wireless network card, LAN Guard technology , triple M.2 slot for faster SSDs, SupremeFX sound card and Aura RGB lighting system.

In our tests we have managed to put the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X with 3200 MHz memories at 4.1 GHz. That is, the limit by air that we can acquire with these processors, although theirs is to find the sweet spot at 3.9 and 4 GHz .

Currently we can find it in Spanish online stores available for a price of 359 euros. Is that amount worth it? We think so, but if you can't afford it, you can buy somewhat cheaper solutions from the same ASus that will also offer you great performance.
