Unboxing and design

As Asus has accustomed us, he makes a classic presentation for this card. On its cover we see an image of the graphics card, the model in question, which has 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, compatible with AURA SYNC lighting and which is somewhat more “doped” than the standard one.

Once we turn the box, we see the main novelties that the brand implements in this personalized model. And is that Nvidia has decided not to release its own reference model and has left manufacturers free to customize their PCBs to their liking. Paint everything very well!

Once we open the box we will find the following bundle

  • Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1650 Card Installation and User Guide Asus Software CD

We do not have any type of extra cable or anything like that, but it should not worry us much, since the power needs of the graphic is very low. Although on this subject we will talk a little later.

In the foreground you can see the ASUS GTX 1650 Strix fully unpacked, we see a product of a very compact size. It has dimensions of 24.2 (width) x 14.2 (height) x 3.9 cm (depth) and occupying a space of two slots.

Asus has decided to mount an external PVC plastic cover with very aggressive lines. We have been demanding a beautiful aluminum cover from Asus for some time, and it would be the finishing touch to have one of the best graphics cards on the market. But hey, in this case we understand it to be a mid-range graphics card.

In the market we will find two models, the normal one and the overclocked version (which is the one we are analyzing), which comes with frequencies somewhat up. It has 0dB technology. What does this mean? That when the graphic core reaches 55 ºC, the fans will be activated. A fantastic solution for lovers of silence?

For RGB lovers, comment that ASUS has made a very minimalist design. Only the logo located in the upper central area has these characteristics. And obviously it is compatible with Asus AURA Sync technology, which as many of you know is 100% customizable and synchronizable from the Windows application.

In the back area we have a backplate made of brushed aluminum, and it will be the one we will see if we place the card in its normal configuration on our computer. The function of this sheet is to offer greater resistance to the weight of the card in a better way so that the PCB does not deform, have a better aesthetic and obtain better temperatures.

The Asus GTX 1650 Strix has a small button on the top left with which we can interact to physically turn off the lighting of the card. The truth, that we do not see a very interesting utility for this model, since it only has a small LED (as we have indicated before).

Another detail to consider is the incorporation of a 4-pin header to give us the possibility of connecting a fan. Wait, wait… what's the point of this? This allows us to improve the ventilation of our box and thus modify the speed of the fans depending on the temperature of the GPU or CPU. We have tried it and it is a very interesting option.

Finally we indicate the video connections that we have on the back.

  • Two HDMI 2.0b ports Two DisplayPort 1.4

With this we finish the first look, now we will get more fully into its specifications. Here we go!

Technical characteristics, features and PCB

Removing the heatsink is fairly easy and does not require extensive knowledge. With a screwdriver we remove the 4 screws that the backplate takes to the PCB and we can remove the heatsink without any problem.

As we can see in the previous two images, it is built on a main aluminum block with a copper contact plate to collect all the heat from the chipset. As it is a chip that will not give off much heat, they have decided to opt for only 2 copper heatpipes, coming out of both sides of the GPU block and that will carry the heat to the entire surface of the heatsink.

Of the three graphics cards we've tested, the Asus takes the best PCB on the street. It has a total of 4 supply phases with top quality capacitors for a very long longevity.

Asus if you have decided to mount a 6-pin power connection located at the top. We must not forget the benefits of the Turing architecture in terms of consumption, which in this version has been reduced to 75 W, which makes it a priori a super efficient graphics card.

The chipset that Nvidia has used for this GeForce GTX 1650 has the TU117 12nm FinFET designation, let's not confuse GTX with the last generation, because that is not the case. This GPU has a total of 896 CUDA cores, but none of the RT or Tensor cores that were responsible for doing DLSS and Ray Tracing, so in this case we will not have that possibility.

Asus has overclocked this GPU and has prepared it for speeds of 1485 MHz or through Boost it goes up to 1830 MHz. The 4 GB of memory is GDDR5, they have a 128-bit bus and a bandwidth of 128 GB / second.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080 and the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers. We found it inconsistent to test in 4K resolution, as none of it makes sense for this model. The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website (just released at launch).

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Overclocking

Note: Each graphics card can go up at different frequencies. Does it depend a little on how lucky you are?

At the overclocking level, we have been able to give it a little push in the memories (+680 MHz) and in the core up to stable 1615 MHz. With this improvement we have reached ~ 2070 MHz. At the benchmark level, we see a great improvement, but and in Games? We have chosen DEUS EX to test the total gain in FPS.

Deus EX Asus GTX 1650 Strix Stock Asus GTX 1650 Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 48 FPS 53.5 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 32 FPS 34.5 FPS

Temperature and consumption

At the temperature level we are very happy with the results obtained with the new Asus Strix Geforce GTX 1650. We have obtained 41 ºC when idle, we have to remember that it is a GPU that does not activate the fans at low load and that when we make intensive use of the graphics card they activate. Once active at maximum power, we have not seen it rise from 59 ºC on average.

We also leave you a picture after 6 hours of operation with Furmark running. As we can see the temperatures are quite good and the dissipation capacity is remarkable. We see that the memories are set at 72 ºC and the chipset area rises to 63 ºC. Nothing alarming, but it would be fixed with heatsinks in the power phases.

Consumption is for the entire team *

Regarding energy consumption, we find an average of 44.7 W at low load and 155.3 W at maximum power. When we also stress the processor we reach 272 W. Once again NVIDIA takes advantage of having one of the best performance / consumption that the market offers.

Final words and conclusion about Asus GTX 1650 Strix

As we have seen in our test bench, the performance is very good in Full HD resolution. As Nvidia told us its performance is 200% compared to the GTX 950 and 70% more than the Nvidia GTX 1050 in 1080p.

The new Turing TU117 chip, its 4 GB GDDR5 and the excellent cooling of the Strix make it a good, beautiful and cheap graphics card. Enhanced performance, efficiency, concurrent, floating point calculations, and a unified cache architecture with a larger L1 cache and Adaptive shading are features to consider.

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

Thanks to the output connections that Asus has incorporated, it supports 4K resolution and even up to 8K for the DisplayPort 1.4 version at 30 Hz if we choose to deactivate the DSC or up to 60 Hz if we activate it. Something that we have already seen in higher-end graphics cards.

As expected, its consumption is minimal (there are models without power connectors) and the temperatures are great. Still, we have been able to overclock a bit (nothing cool, but it's 3 fps more) and slightly improve performance.

Its estimated price is $ 149, which at the exchange would be about 132 euros, as the change is always made 1: 1, we see it at 200 euros. Seeing the result that it has given us and the characteristics of this Asus GTX 1650 Strix of 4 GB it seems to us an interesting option if the drivers are polished in these next weeks. What do you think of the GTX 1650 Strix? Do you think it will be your ideal graphics card?
