We are all ready for the new Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G, the smallest card in the Turing family that came to light on April 23 together with the official drivers. In this case we have an economic card, without giving up a 128-bit bandwidth and 4 GB GDDR5, which together with a WINFORCE 2X heatsink from the manufacturer, are up to 70% faster than the GTX 1050 at 1080p resolutions.

We were already looking forward to testing this new GPU to see where it is able to stand in terms of performance and quality, so, without further ado, let's start this review.

As always, we must thank Gigabyte for their trust in us to give us their product to do our analysis.

Unboxing and design

How could it be otherwise, the presentation of this Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G is practically identical to that used in higher models. Gigabyte is clear that not because it is less expensive, a GPU should come in a worse quality box. That is why on its front we see the typical color screen printing next to the brand and model of what we have in our hands.

In the rear area we will also find the main features that the brand has implemented in its custom model, such as RGB Fusion lighting, a WINDFORCE 2X heatsink or its overclocking capacity. As with all custom models, the GPUs have been tightened a bit more to give a factory extra.

Once we open the box, we will find a traditional bundle, with the card placed on a cardboard mold next to the CD with the drivers (in the version that will be released) and the instruction manual and quick guide.

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G is not the only model that will put our Gigabyte at our service, but we will have up to four different variants, all of them destined to fit the preferences of each type of user.

In addition to this model that we are dealing with, which is the most powerful and recommended, we also have another OC variant with 90mm fans and a somewhat more basic heatsink with better overclocking, of course. In addition, we will have another more decaffeinated and basic version of double fan and single fan in ITX configuration although all of them carry the OC symbol, so their frequency is higher than the factory 1485/1665 MHz.

But without a doubt the space is occupied today by the most powerful version, and the one that, in our opinion, is most worthwhile due to its quality of construction. This GTX 1650 can be considered the replacement of the previous GTX 1050, with a power in base state that is 70% higher than the previous generation. We hope it will be even more in this OC version. It has a TU117 12nm FinFET GPU and 4GB GDDR5.

Undoubtedly the most interesting part of the design is its heatsink, as it is a custom Gigabyte model, we have the presence of a WINDFORCE 2X with a double 100mm fan protected by a hard plastic casing and practically identical in appearance to its older sisters. It is clearly seen that its heatsink is aluminum and that two copper heatpipes pass through it , which we will see in more detail later.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G has the alternative rotation system of its fans, this means that each fan rotates in the opposite direction to the other to facilitate air flow through the finned aluminum block. Without a doubt a solution that has already been adopted in all the GPUs of the brand and practically all manufacturers.

But we should also not forget about the 3D Active Fan technology, whose purpose is to keep the fans turned off while the GPU does not exceed a threshold temperature, which will almost always be 60 degrees. Better energy efficiency and less noise, so we will have no complaints while we are not playing.

The measurements of this Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G are 267 mm long, 140 cm wide and 40 mm thick, although the PCB has measurements of 199 mm long by 111 mm wide. We will have no problem installing it in most of the chassis on the market, even the smallest ones. We really liked the design work of the entire case, with black and gray tones.

If we turn it around, we will also have a large blackplate built in this plastic case that protects the entire PCB from external action. We think that it is perfectly normal not to use aluminum for these finishes, since it is a product that is in the entry range in terms of GPU performance and the main thing is to make it economical. In addition, this configuration will be more than enough to be able to properly hold the entire card, weighing only 666 grams.

And be careful, because Gigabyte has had the detail of incorporating RGB Fusion lighting in this maximum performance model. Specifically we find it in the Gigabyte logo located in the side area, so it will be perfectly controller and customizable with the corresponding software.

We are struck by the use of a 6-pin PCI power connector for this version. We say it, because the base version of Nvidia does not need external power to work, being only 75W. In any case, it is normal due to the higher consumption with factory overclocking, and that is why the manufacturer recommends using a power supply of at least 300W.

What is fully expected is the absence of SLI in this Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G. They don't have their older sisters, what sense would it make to install it in the lower one?

We finish this exterior description by looking at the rear panel of ports, which has the ability to connect four monitors simultaneously. The ports that we will have are:

  • 1x DisplayPort 1.4 3x HDMI 2.0b

All of them will be able to provide a maximum digital resolution of 7680 × 4320 @ 60Hz (8K). In this case we have no trace of USB Type-C connector.

PCB and performance

Well in this case we have decided not to disassemble the heatsink and separate it from its PCB, the reason? because we do not have too many news or unexpected things, and we can also describe it perfectly without having to.

It consists of a finned aluminum block divided into three zones: the central zone is responsible for capturing the heat from the GPU using two copper heatpipes and spreading them over the other two lateral zones. Simultaneously, the other zones are in direct contact with the memory chips and the VRM consisting of 3 + 1 supply phases. Well, these two heatpipes are built with a double copper layer with liquid filled micro channels to improve heat transfer and transport.

As we already anticipated before, the GPU that mounts this new Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G, bears the name TU117 with manufacturing process of 12 nm FinFET. It is a GPU clearly different from that used by the GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti (TU116), whose main purpose is to offer a balance between performance, cost and consumption. The performance of shaders with concurrent floating point calculation capabilities has been optimized, and in this case with a 64K L1 cache for each SM. It has a frequency of 1485/1665 MHz in the base configuration.

Inside we have a total of 896 CUDA Cores and of course no Tensor or RT, although you will already know that with our drivers the GTX have the ability to do Ray Tracing in real time. The ROPs (rendering units) count is 32, and the TMUs (texturing units) count is 56. They are not as impressive figures as the superior sisters, although enough to give us a good 1080p gaming experience as we will see now.

The memory configuration used is a total of 4 GB GDDR5 at an effective speed of 8 Gbps. We do not have different variants to these or different speeds. Similarly, the bus width is around 128 bits, compared to 192 for GTX 16x, with a speed of also 128 GB / s.

These are features that on paper remind us of a GTX 1050 Ti, although the memory speed has increased and of course the Turing chip performance is significantly better. Let's see now in our tests where this new GPU can be placed.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. To have adequate performance we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080 and the second resolution is making the leap to 2K or 1440P gamers. The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website (just released at launch).

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Overclocking

Note: Each graphics card can go up at different frequencies. Does it depend a little on how lucky you are?

At the overclocking level we have been able to give it a little tug on the memories (+700 MHz) and in the core up to + 135 MHz. As standard it runs up to 1930 MHz, with this improvement we have reached ~ 2050 MHz. benchmark we see a great improvement, but what about Games? We have chosen DEUS EX to test the total gain in FPS.

Deus EX Gigabyte GTX 1650 Stock Gigabyte GTX 1650 Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 48 FPS 54 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 31 FPS 33 FPS

Temperature and consumption

At the temperature level, we are very happy with the results obtained with the new Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1650. We have obtained 42 ºC at rest, we have to remember that it is a GPU that does not activate the fans at low load and that when we make intensive use of the graphics card they activate. Once active at maximum power, we have not seen it rise from 57 ºC on average.

We also leave you a picture after 6 hours of operation with Furmark running. As we can see the temperatures are great. The great work done by the Gigabyte heatsink and the new fans is great.

Consumption is for the entire team *

Regarding energy consumption, we find an average of 70 W at low load and 153 W at maximum power. When we also stress the processor we reach 297 W.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 Gaming OC 4G hits the market with one of the best intentions. Offer the best performance at the best price, without losing sound or aesthetics. And Gigabyte has succeeded.

In our tests we can see that when looking at something green drivers, we have some results caught with a clamp. The average FPS in our classic games is 40 to 60 FPS with filters high. That is, a graphics card that works at a level somewhat higher than the GTX 1050 Ti.

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

Consumption and temperatures are very good. We are very happy with the work that Gigabyte has done, but we still think that a plastic backplate is a step back. It is true that it removes the ugly circuitry from the PCB at first glance, but it does not contribute anything.

Currently we can find it for 194.90 euros the model with serial OC or a model less frequently for 179.90 euros (which is the one we recommend that you buy right now). We believe that this launch has somewhat high prices in general, and should be around 130 to 150 euros. What do you think about this GPU?
