It is time to introduce you to the Asus Prime X399-A with ATX format, 11 digital phases, RGB lighting system and one of the best coolers we have tested to date.

Unboxing and design

The Asus Prime X399-A comes in a sturdy case that stands out for its size. On its cover we find an image of the motherboard, the multitude of certifications that guarantee it and a seal that indicates that it incorporates Aura SYNC technology.

While in the lower area we have all the most important specifications and features in detail. It looks good, right?

Inside we find the following bundle:

The Asus Prime X399-A is featured with an AMD TR4 socket and paired with the most powerful AMD-made chipset: X399. This is compatible with the new AMD Threadripper processors manufactured in 14 nm and that come to be at the top of the enthusiastic platforms.

It has an ATX format and its dimensions are slightly out of the standard with 30.4 cm x 26.9 cm. If you combine all this with a black / gray design, it is a beautiful and elegant component. We leave you a view of the back for the most curious readers.

As is customary for past generations, dissipation is divided into two zones: power phases and one for the southern chipset. It has a total of 11 power phases supported by Digi + Power Control technology that offers real-time control over voltage drop and energy efficiency adjustments.

To have an efficient power supply, it has a 24-pin ATX connection and two 8 + 4-pin EPS connectors to guarantee stability and safely overclock.

Once we remove the upper plastic cover from the rear connections we find a small fan that will keep the temperatures of the supply phases at bay. And it is that both AMD and Asus do not want any surprises as we have lived with the X299 platform (although later they were not right;)).

A total of 8 compatible Quad Channel DDR4 RAM sockets are available up to 128 GB ECC / Non ECC with frequencies up to 3600 Mhz and AMP profile. Who will fill these capacities? We at least don't!

The layout of the PCI Express connections is quite good, since it has three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots that will allow us to install 2 Way / 3 Way configurations of Nvidia SLI and AMD CrossfireX. While it is additionally complemented by a PCI Express x4 connection and a PCI Express x1 connection.

PCI Express x16 slots are reinforced with metal armor to better cushion heavy graphics cards, as well as improve transfer by up to 20%.

Regarding high-speed storage, it has two slots for the M.2 NVMe connection that allows us to install any SSD of this format with the measures 2242/2260/2280/22110 (42/60/80 and 110mm). Which allow us to perform RAID 0.1 and 10 with very good speeds and efficiency.

The first slot is located below the heatsink of the X399 chipset. This benefits from better cooling since the second is vertically for installation.

It incorporates an 8-channel sound card with Crystal Sound 3 technology with the interesting S1220A that isolates component interference (EMI) much faster and better. It also incorporates DTS technology, DTS for headphones, a special PCB for audio and premium Japanese components.

Let's not forget that it also incorporates a total of 6 SATA III connections at 6Gbp / s that allows us to have enough conventional SSDs and hard drives. Additionally a U.2 slot that allows us to get breakneck speeds.

Finally, we leave you all the rear connections that it integrates:

To check the stability of the AMD Threadripper 1920X processor at stock speeds, 3200 MHz memories, the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and we have used a Corsair H100i V2 cooling.

The graph that we have used is an Nvidia GTX1080 Ti, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with the resolution 1920 x 1080. We show you the results we have obtained:

BIOS

Pleasant surprise to find a BIOS so refined and so good in this new generation. As it can be seen that Asus has put the batteries… and if you remember in our review of the Zenith we said it. It allows us to manually overclock, set the memories to 3200 MHz without any problem, monitor temperatures, also the main voltages and much more.

Final words and conclusion about Asus Prime X399-A

The Asus Prime X399-A is an ATX-format motherboard that features premium components and dissipation. Among its benefits we find enough storage connections, it supports up to 128 GB of ECC / Non-ECC RAM, 3 Way SLI & CrossFireX and double M.2 connection.

In our tests we have obtained very good results in Full HD with the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X processor and the 3200 MHz G.Skill FlareX memories. The main titles has moved it perfectly.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

It is true that it does not incorporate all the EXTRAS or the aesthetics of the Asus ROG X399 Zenith Extreme but it is a motherboard that offers us a very similar performance for a much lower cost. Currently we find it in online stores for 339 euros. Very good price for this piece of motherboard!
