Asus continues to tread very strongly in the router sector, its most impressive model is the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 that promises to offer the best features and benefits on the market with the most demanding users in mind. Do not miss our analysis in Spanish.

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 bets on a luxury presentation, you could not expect less from a brand like Asus. The router comes in a colorful cardboard box and with a design very similar to the one we have seen in the other models of this brand. On the front we see a great image with a print quality of 10, on the back all its features are detailed in several languages including Spanish.

Once we open the box we do not find the following content:

  • Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 Gaming Router RJ-45 Cable Power Adapter Quick Start Guide Warranty Card

We are already focusing on the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300, it is a huge router, with a size of 245 x 245 x 65 mm together with a weight of 1880 grams and a spectacular design that is very inspired by the ROG series of Asus. The entire body of the device is made of impressive quality black plastic along with some red accents to enhance aesthetics and fit the ROG series.

At the top we see a ventilation grille so that the heat generated goes outside and does not accumulate inside the equipment, which could reduce its performance and reduce its useful life.

It looks impressive with its eight external antennas, these are responsible for offering exceptional coverage so that we can navigate at full speed and play smoothly in any corner of our house, not surprisingly, it is a router indicated for very large homes. These antennas are compatible with the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands so there are no problems. Doesn't it remind you of a spider?

We highlight that it includes a 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands. Thanks to the latter, you can assign one of the 5 GHz bands to the gaming devices, and that the rest of the equipment connect to the remaining two bands (2.4 and 5 GHz).

Asus has included the following LED indicators, thanks to them we can know at all times the operating status of our router.

  • Power x 1Wi-Fi x 2WAN x 1LAN x 1WPS x 1

We are facing a router of the best quality compatible with MU-MIMO with the following configuration:

  • 2.4 GHz 4 x 45 GHz-1 4 x 45 GHz-2 4 x 4

Thanks to this, we can enjoy the best quality and connection speed even with several users and a multitude of connected devices at the same time. Its combined throughput reaches 5300 Mbps theoretical which are distributed in a 1000 + 2167 + 2167 Mbps configuration.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 network standards. It incorporates RangeBoost, a technology that uses hardware and software innovations to optimize the coverage of the Wi-Fi zone and that you can play from the place you prefer.

On the back it includes eight Gigabit Ethernet network ports, two of which are optimized for gaming, which will achieve maximum speed and minimum latency in games, essential to have a good experience. It also includes a WAN port and two USB 3.0 ports that will serve to connect various storage media and share them over the network with all the computers that connect to it.

In addition, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 includes the Link Aggregation function that allows the bandwidth of two LAN ports to be added and transfer speeds of up to 2 Gbps are available, an ideal feature for NAS storage solutions.

Inside it has a CPU signed by Broadcom BCM4908 with 4 cores and 64 bits at 1.8 GHz capable of exposing the processors of many computers. This is combined with 1 GB of RAM (two Nanya NT5CC256M16DP-DI modules) so we have very powerful hardware that will manage the entire router perfectly in an incredible way.

Testing equipment

To make the performance measurements we will use the following components:

  • 1 Asus PCE-AC88 Client.Team 1, with Intel i219v network cardTeam 2, with Intel i219vJPerf version 2.0.2 network card

Wireless Performance

In this case we are lucky to have a 3T3R client and we will be able to exploit this router to the best of its ability. This is the PCE-AC88 that we have already analyzed, so it has a Broadcom chip, which has shown better performance than the Quantenna chip-based client that we use to test against your most direct rivals. The yields obtained have been the following:

  • Router - Equipment in the same room: 809 Mbit / s in download Router - Equipment in Room at 15 meters with various walls: 522 Mbit / s in download.

Firmware and configuration

The installation of the device is super fast and intuitive. By default it allows us to choose an advanced configuration or a recommended one for non-expert users. In our we chose advanced and we only had to configure the language to have the router fully operational.

To enter the administration panel you must write your gateway: 192.168.1.1 (check from the console with ipconfig). The installation is super simple and in case you have your router operated in bridge mode or in modem mode, it is as simple as giving everything to the following. During installation it will ask us to create a username and password. Once we finish the installation we will get an image like the previous one.

In the dashboard we find the most important data to have a first view. A good way to keep a quick check on our LAN. While security is very important and Asus knows it, this is why the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 is equipped with Game IPS, a state-of-the-art intrusion prevention system with Trend Micro technology that is responsible for protecting the gaming network against external attacks, which neutralizes before they reach your network or devices. This feature protects your network against attacks and intrusions even if you deactivate the security programs of your PC, something necessary when, for example, you want to test games that are blocked.

It also has Game Boost technology that studies all the input and output packages of each client (each PC or electronic device connected to your network), and when it sees your PC, it runs a game, giving it greater bandwidth (higher priority).). Although Asus calls it "Acceleration in games".

There is the possibility of activating Gamers Private Network that avoids congested environments, this map indicates where the fastest servers are located. There are also game profiles to get the most out of our console and it is very intuitive.

Another of the most interesting is VPN Fusion that allows you to simultaneously use a private VPN and your internet connection. This technology is great, as it takes the direct path to the gaming server. It seems to us a great success, since we reduce the latency of our system.

The Advanced Settings page displays detailed information about the router, wireless network, and guest network. The Settings menu allows you to configure all the most classic options on Asus RT series routers. In addition to giving NAS storage use to the USB connection, use the AiCloud cloud and activate the firewall. What a luxury router! Although as a possible improvement, we miss the skin of the less aggressive interface. Personally, I don't really like how it looks with the red and the ROG logo.

Final words and conclusion about Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300

The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 comes to the market to be strong among gaming routers. We think it is a good merger between the RT-AC88U and the new RT-AC86U, as they are both at the crest of the home router wave. But the GT-AC5300 gives a bigger plus with an improved chipset, a total of eight LAN connections and is ideal to get the most out of LAN Party (via wifi) with its web.

In our performance tests it has behaved as expected . A great performance in the 5 GHz band, since in the 2 GHz band all Asus products offer the maximum allowed.

The firmware is super complete and all the gaming options it offers are super interesting. Although personally his skin "ROG" I do not like much, as it seems somewhat aggressive to a router. For example, the skin used by my current Asus RT-AC88U seems fantastic to me, since it is very pleasing to the eye.

We recommend you read the best routers on the market

Currently its price is 420 euros. We know that it is somewhat high, but if it escapes you, you can always buy the Asus RT-AC88U or Asus RT-AC86U which are much more competitively priced. In short, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 is the Ferrari of routers?
