Asus has officially unveiled a new TRX40 series motherboard, a quick successor to its ROG Zenith II Extreme that aims to deliver more overclocking potential with AMD's upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processors. This is the TRX40 ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha, the motherboard designed for 64-core overclocking.

Asus ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha uses TRX40 socket for Threadripper

The motherboard looks very similar to the Zenith II Extreme, both motherboards look identical, and as far as the specs go, both are also similar. It is a motherboard with 16 VRM phases, they offer five M.2 slots, support Wi-Fi 6 and 10 Gbps ethernet and have a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 connection. The main differences between the original Zenith II Extreme and the Zenith Extreme II Alpha are under the hood, as Asus replaces the 16 power stages of the original Zenith II Infineon TDA21472 with Infineon TDA21490 power stages.

These power changes and other component changes should help the Zenith II Alpha drive processors with a higher frequency range and core count. Strangely, we can't find any information on Infineon's TDA21490 power amps on the company's website, suggesting that these power amps are newly released models. Asus has stated that these new power stages are rated at 90 amps, rather than Infineon's TDA21472 power stages 70 amps. This gives the ROG TRX40 Zenith II Extreme Alpha much more room to work.

At this time, we don't know the expected launch date or price of its updated TRX40 ROG Zenith Extreme II Alpha motherboard, though we hope it will come out before AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor. We will keep you informed.
