Asustor AS3102T Unboxing and Design

Asustor makes a premium presentation for the Asustor AS3102T. On the cover we can see an image of the NAS along with all its most relevant technical characteristics. We also see compatibility with Windows, MAC OSX and Linux operating systems.

Once we open the box we are inside:

• Asustor AS3102T. Power supply and cable. Instruction manual and quick guide. Set of network cables. Screws for installing hard drives.

The Asustor AS3102T is a two-bay NAS system that comes equipped with a plastic and metal combo frame. This design reminds us a lot of Asus high-end routers. What dimensions does it have? They are very compact with 65 x 102 x 218 mm and a weight of 1.17 kg.

Digging deeper into its features we come across a 14nm Intel Celeron N3050 Braswell processor at a base speed of 1.6 GHz that with the turbo goes up to 2.16 GHz. Its graphics card is signed by the eighth generation Intel HD Graphics. To have a balance in its hardware, it incorporates 2 GB of DDR3 RAM soldered on the motherboard, so we will not be able to expand it.

We find it strange not to find the power button on the front, but we do have a USB 3.0 connection, LED indicators and an infrared receiver. In total we have 2 internal bays that allow us to install a total of two 8TB disks in RAID, making a total of 16TB. Not bad for a bug of these characteristics.

We look at the rear area of ​​the NAS and we find a small 70mm fan that cools the entire system, a single rear HDMI connection (to play HD content), power button, reset button, a USB 3.0 connection Y a 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) LAN connection.

Once we opened the NAS (removing the 3 rear screws with our fingers, without the need for tools) we found a very collected system. We have a cabin that the discs must be fixed manually and a powerful aluminum heatsink for the Celeron processor.

Asustor AS3102T: Installation and Operating System

Once our hard drives are installed in our ASUSTOR AS3102T NAS server, we proceed to turn it on. To start with the configuration we have to download the Asustor Control Center application that can be downloaded from the official website of the brand or on the CD that comes standard. What does this application do? It offers us many options, from updating firmware, searching all connected Asustor devices in our network, logging in, sharing and viewing services. In our case it will serve as an installation assistant since it indicates the IP number of the product.

The Nas has a simple setup as an advanced setup. We choose the one-click and proceed to install.

To enter within the web interface, it is as simple as entering any web browser: dip: 8000 we login and we will find the entire online operating system, it is without a doubt extremely minimalist and practical.

On the main screen we find several installed applications. Among the most important are:

• Access Control and Settings: The control panel that will allow us to configure the entire NAS / server. Among them the management of users, ports, passwords, etc… Activity of the monitor: This application is very useful, since we can monitor temperature and full use of the NAS. Central App: Repositories where all the applications are. From torrent downloaders to Plex to play multimedia. Backup & Restore: It allows us to make backups and restore them with a single click. File Explorer: Online explorer that allows us to review the installed disks. Very useful, when you want to avoid using the PC and you are connected from your smartphone or tablet.

Indicate that the fluidity of the system in a web environment and when it plays multimedia content is really incredible. This is due to using a last batch processor and a very well optimized system. The only downside, that the Spanish language is not available (at the moment).

AiMaster

Aimaster is a variety of applications for your smartphone. What does it allow us to do? These include how to manage file searches, view images, listen to music, monitor surveillance, turn on the server, update the firmware and offer all the information on its status.

How do we connect to it? We have three methods, from automatic detection of IP within the network, from HOST IP or from Cloud identification.

4K playback: Kodi, ADM and YoutubeTV

This model allows the reproduction of multimedia content through the HDMI connection and its powerful hardware. Among them we find the support through applications such as Kodi, ADM, Plex YoutubeTV and its control from the AiCAST application .

Aicast is an exclusive application for your high-quality smartphone that allows you to control Kodi (Old XBMC) on various Asustor devices. That allows us? Separate videos, music and images with playback functions into each of its categories. It is so intuitive that its use is very easy. If you have a remote control with an infrared connection, you can use the Remote center application for its configuration.

Video transcoding

Video transcoding refers to the process of converting unsupported video files originally into a compatible format. This is done thanks to LooksGood that allows streaming reading of MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, FLV, MKA, TS, MPG, RA, RAM, RM, RV, RMVB files and transcoding on the input and output line to MP4 up to 1080p. Before proceeding to the performance tests I would like to highlight the wide range of applications that the Asustor NAS series incorporates that are compatible for both iOS and Android. How can I find them? They are already available from the Apple Store and Google Play.

All of them can be connected in 3 different ways: HostIP, per cloud user or searching the network, all of them with HTTPS certificate and password.

Among the most used applications we find AiDownload which is a download manager, AiMaster that allows us to update, see the status of the equipment and integrate all Asustor applications.

AiData that allows you to manage all the data in the cloud and has a fairly intuitive integration together with a powerful privacy system on your smartphone. AiSecure which is a vibrating center, quite useful for users who want maximum security at home.

And finally AiFoto2 which is an application that shows and manages all our images in a simple way. Its visualizer makes you fall in love with every movement we make on the screen. It also allows us to upload photos automatically and has an encryption of albums. It also allows you to insert comments on photos, search, view EXIF ​​information and download them to your smartphone.

Performance and consumption test

To test the performance of the NAS we have used the well-known Crystal Disk Mark software that measures the read and write rates of the hard disk, we have exactly used a 240 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD to test the maximum that the NAS offers per network.

Other of our tests has been to copy several files with different sizes and the result has been as expected with 113 MB / s.

The consumption tests have been taken directly on the wall, with the NAS plug on the meter. We have tested with one and two Western Digital Red mechanical hard drives and the result is really good:

The Asustor AS3102T is a NAS for home or small business use that meets everything you may be asked for: security, reliability, power and capable of playing multimedia content in Full HD and 4K thanks to its 6th generation Intel Celeron processor.

The ADM 2.6 operating system is very fast and with KODI connected to the TV via HDMI, it becomes the perfect ally for any computer lover. It also has a 3 year warranty.
