AS-302T scavenger

The presentation is simple in a cardboard box that lacks luxurious designs or that enters through our eyes. It is resistant and includes a handle that is very effective when transporting it. Note that the back has a sticker with all the characteristics of the system. Once we opened the box we found a quick guide with several languages, protected with foam and plastic to prevent the entry of dust.

In addition to a small box that houses screws for fixing hard drives, a CD with software, a network cable, a 60W power supply and a cable for connection, the Asustor AS-302T has reduced dimensions and quite light weight. The chassis is made of metallic aluminum with dark gray finishes, this system helps to dissipate the heat given off from the motherboard. Only on one of the sides do we have small holes that help to cool the system better. The NAS is equipped with a Intel Atom CE5335 dual-core SoC processor, runs at a speed of 1.6 Ghz and incorporates Hyper-Threading technology. As a graphics card, it integrates a PowerVR SGX545 (used in certain Smarpthone / Tablets) capable of supporting H264 encryption and AES encryption, that is, a great ally for an HTPC. Regarding RAM, we have 4 Samsung K4B2G1646E-BCK0 chips that make a Total 1GB RAM and FL128SA1F00 ROM IC containing the operating system. This model includes two 3.5 "/ 2.5" hard drive rack bays. In the front area we have LED indicators (Hard disk, power, LAN…). As we can see in the following image, it does not have a security system for hard drives. It is also accompanied by a USB 3.0 port. in order to make quick backups to a high speed flash drive. When removing the trays we see that they are of great quality and we can accommodate any size of mechanical hard drive or SSD. The connections are SATA III which is the fastest interface for NAS on the market. On the back we have a 70mm fan (brand YS TEch FD127025HB) 4400 RPM and all input and output connections: HDMI 1.4a, network card Gigabit (Realtek RTL8211E), power and USB. And as a security measure, a Kesigton lock.

Installation and first impressions of the operating system

To perform the installation we must leave plugged in both the light and the Ethernet connection to the NAS. Once connected we insert the DVD and install the Control Center application and it will detect our storage equipment with an IP and its status. We will press the date button with the address to the right and we will access the online installation panel.

The unit automatically updates its operating system with new firmware and we wait a few minutes…

And the installation style already appears. We have two:
  • Configuration with a single click: recommended for those who do not understand networks or computers. Default configuration: here we can customize RAID, IP, gateways, etc…

Once the option is chosen, we customize a name for the team and a password for the user 'admin'. When we press next, the system will begin to install.

As a last step, we recommend registering at Asustor to cover our needs with the Cloud (company cloud) and to have the guarantee in full force.

When we dial our IP in Google Chrome we already see that we can insert our admin user and the password that we previously created.

Once inside we have a small guide and the entire interface. As you can see it is fully navigable and has many options, this reminds us of other high-end companies.

Once inside we have access to any aspect from access control, activity monitoring, to the application center, backup and restoration, external devices, file explorer, services, hard disk manager and system appearance. In the next sections I want to tell you which are the most interesting and relevant applications.

My archive

The MyArchive function allows you to use hard drives as removable storage files. It is as simple as connecting one when you need it and changing it for another according to your needs. In this case, having a double bay NAs, the second RACK is used for this technology. We leave you an illustrative video.

Sleeping Mode S3

Sleeping Mode S3 allows us to include a system sleep mode and instant re-activation saving energy, server durability and hard drives.

With ASUSTOR NAS the activation time is almost instantaneous. Wake up your NAS when you need it and put it to sleep when you're done. Enjoy immediate access to your NAS when you need it most, day or night.

Searchlight

If we need to locate a file or an application with Searchlight it is very simple. It is located in the upper right area and it will give us all the possible results. Searchlight also enables instant file preview and fuzzy searches to increase your efficiency and productivity.

Two my Backup

Simply connect your USB storage device or camera to the ASUSTOR NAS and press the backup button. The data will be copied to the specified location on the NAS. We are aware of the value of your data and photos, so ASUSTOR NAS makes it easy to protect with just the touch of a button. One Touch Backup also allows you to back up your data to your NAS quickly and easily. ASUSTOR's two-way transfer lets you copy data from your NAS to your favorite USB storage device, making it an effective disaster recovery solution.

CloudConnect and EZ-Router

ASUSTOR's Cloud Connect feature can help you quickly and easily create your own private cloud. Create a unique and personal Cloud ID and you can connect to your ASUSTOR NAS from virtually anywhere in the world. Once you have activated Cloud Connect, you will have a custom host name (eg juan.myasustor.com) And you can use MyASUSTOR to connect to your NAS. Regardless of whether you're in the office or on vacation, you can now enjoy the convenience of accessing the cloud from anywhere, anytime.

Custom Cloud Server: EZ-Router enables integration of your NAS in the cloud by configuring designated ports. It also offers you the ability to specify the services you want to activate by helping you create a fully customized cloud server.

Central APP

It also offers us an application center where we will find all kinds of APP. For example: downloads, antivirus, social network, database, blogs, virtual store setup: Prestashop, etc…

Consumption

conclusion

It is increasingly common to have a NAS at home and also use it as a media center with our television. It's the first time we've tried an Asustor and the taste in your mouth with the AS-302T has been fantastic. For a home network with 2 bays of hard drives it will surely surpass us, since it allows us to install the highest hard drives on the market. Another of the great advantages is its low power consumption and the great possibilities it offers us with applications and settings specific to the operating system. In short, if you are looking for a good, beautiful and cheap NAS and also with multimedia functions today it is difficult to overcome the ASustor AS-302T with an entry price of € 290.
