This beginning of the year is bringing us incredible performance monitors, and this BenQ PD2720U is no exception. In this case we are facing a monitor optimized for design, so its strength will be the overwhelming image quality, with a 27-inch IPS panel at 4K resolution and 60 Hz. Its color gamut is amazing, with 96% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 100% Adobe RGB, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and an exquisite design.

Do you want to see what this monitor is capable of? Well, you will see it immediately, because if you are looking for image quality in this cigar, the BenQ PD2720U will give it to you.

First of all, we thank BenQ for the assignment of this product for its analysis.

BenQ PD2720U technical specifications

Unboxing and design

This BenQ PD2720U is a monitor specially made for design with superior image quality and 27 inches diagonal. We quickly noticed this in the box, in which we did not find the typical colorful gaming presentation with incredible photos. In this case we have a normal neutral cardboard box and with the brand and model. The total package weight is 10.5 Kg and it is quite narrow, so the maneuverability is going to be good.

The elements inside are placed in a double-lid white polystyrene cork mold so that they are completely isolated from the outer packaging. Inside we have many interesting accessories:

  • BenQ PD2720U Monitor DisplayPortCable HDMI Cable Thunderbolt Cable USB 3.1 Type-B Cable Power Cord Gadget Quick Setup Wheel for Picture Mode Back Cover for Port Area User and Mounting Guide

We see a lot of connectivity in this equipment including a Thunderbolt 3 cable 50 cm long.

Before seeing the complete assembled equipment, it is worth taking a closer look at the support system for this monitor, taking advantage of the fact that it comes disassembled.

These are two elements made entirely of aluminum and steel inside the support arm. The finishes are magnificent, in matte and with a fine roughness for better handling. The base is rectangular and of great extension and the support arm consists of an extendable hydraulic system with VESA 100 × 100 mm support.

To join the foot and the arm, you only have to tighten a screw with your fingers, and to join the arm and the screen, we only have to attach the tabs of the support to the monitor and press lightly until it is fixed. Everything is very simple and intuitive.

Once the BenQ PD2720U monitor is mounted, the final look is really good. It is a screen with a tiny 3mm side frame and a very thin 17mm bottom frame. The complete cover of this lampshade is made of very thick PVC plastic with first-rate finishes in dark gray.

As we see the set is very compact with the use of a complete foot. The measurements with foot included are 614.4 mm wide, 443.7 mm high and 186.3 mm deep.

In the rear area we have a set with great quality and good screen support, although we must say that it is susceptible to wobbling if we make sudden movements or hit the table where it is placed. The monitor and arm mount is compatible with the VESA 100 × 100 mm standard.

We appreciate a detail in the form of a rear ring to route the cables that we have connected to the monitor and thus make them practically invisible. In addition, this system will allow us great ergonomics in the three coordinates of space, as we will now see.

The first movement we can make is to raise and lower the monitor. In total the range of movement enters the lowest area and the highest will be 150 mm, thus reaching up to 593 mm maximum height. For this we only have to push the screen up or down, the hydraulic arm will be in charge of moving alone.

We also allow movement on the Z axis, to be able to modify the lateral orientation of the monitor by up to 30 degrees to the right or to the left. The joint is located on the screen's own support arm.

On the Y axis we also have possibilities, with about 5 degrees of front tilt down or 20 degrees up. The joint is located in the VESA support system.

Finally we can even rotate this monitor 90 degrees clockwise to place it completely vertical and in reading mode. We must not forget that this BenQ PD2720U is a design monitor and many times it works vertically to better use CAD programs in building design or newspaper and photo editing.

We will have all noticed that the rear area was somewhat rough with a large gap, but this is easily improved by the rear housing that we have to cover the entire connection area.

We must say that the cooling of this monitor is active, so we will have a fan inside it. In this case it is not a negative thing, since the sound is practically inaudible, and it is only activated when the demands are high, as with the HDR10 mode activated for games.

We now turn to see the connectivity that this BenQ PD2720U provides us, which is a lot and interesting. First of all, we must say that the power supply is built into the monitor, so the power input is three-prong at 230 V

Starting with the connectivity of a screen we have two HDMI 2.0 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4 port, the availability of these in their latest versions is appreciated. We also have a USB 3.1 Type-B port for transporting data from storage devices and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports for connecting portable storage devices to the monitor. The section is completed with a mini USB Type-B port to connect the external selection wheel and a 2.5 mm Jack connector for headset.

The great novelty comes with the presence of two Thunderbolt 3 ports under USB type-C interface, which are capable of working in DisplayPort mode at 65W and 15W, DisplayPort Alt Mode and also for data. Thanks to these ports we can connect the monitor to a PC with this type of interface, or have a total of two 4K monitors in a chain for professional design setups. We have a 50 cm Thunderbolt cable in the purchase package.

Display and features

The technical section of this BenQ PD2720U is first class, as we have seen with its connectivity. We are facing a 27-inch screen with a native UHD resolution at 3842 × 2160 pixels (4K) with a pixel size of 0.1554 x 0.1554 mm, achieving a density of 163 pixels per inch. Enough to not appreciate at a glance each of these light cells.

It mounts an IPS panel with LED backlight, with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, a brightness of 350 cd / m 2 (nits) and a response speed of 5 ms GtG. Also, we have a native contrast of 1000: 1 with DCR 20M: 1. Its color depth is 10 bits (1.07 billion colors) and capable of providing a color fidelity of 96% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB and 100% Adobe RGB, and it also supports HDR10. Something that undoubtedly places it on a very high-performance screen for graphic design, but with the HDR10 we will have an impressive image quality in games.

We also have two 2W speakers to generate good quality stereo sound, for eventual use and to get out of trouble. We must not forget its wide viewing angles of 178 degrees both horizontally and vertically. We can see how the color variation hardly occurs, something that is better appreciated in real vision than in the image, of course.

This BenQ PD2720U monitor also has interesting management utilities, such as the KVM Switch function that will allow us to control a keyboard and mouse game between two different PCs that use one or two screens, ensuring that users to to be able to seamlessly switch between different teams. We also have a small gadget in the shape of a wheel and called Hotkey Puck G2 to customize shortcuts to OSD functions, for example, image modes.

OSD panel and user experience

To access the OSD panel we have two buttons and a joystick in the rear area, in addition to the on and off button. With the joystick we can access the main menu, navigate and select options, and with the two buttons we will access, on the one hand, a quick selection of the video input (HDMI, DP, Thunderbolt) and on the other, the color profile (Display P3, sRGB, M-Book).

The OSD menu of this monitor consists of 7 different sections with a multitude of options that make up a very complete menu and with an intuitive interface and operation entirely with the joystick.

We will have a first section to select input and split screen configuration, etc. A second section to control the characteristics of the image output, brightness, contrast, etc., and likewise another section for the color mode.

In the fourth and fifth section we will have the sound control and the KVM function that we have previously discussed. In addition, we have a sixth section to configure keyboard shortcuts for quick interactions with the monitor and the final section to control the monitor's own hardware functions.

With the free software of the BenQ Display Pilot brand, we will be able to access more monitor functions, and the most interesting thing is that we will not have to use the USB cable for the program to detect the monitor, directly with the video connector will suffice.

The software gives us the possibility to configure the split screen distribution and the auto-rotation of the image on this BenQ PD2720U. In the System section we have a summary of the device firmware, as well as the possibility of updating it and configuring some parameters. These functionalities will be expanded when we have KVM mode activated or connectivity with Thunderbolt 3.

The experience of use has been outstanding, the image quality shows from the first minute of its use and the HDR10 mode for games feels great. As always, we are going to describe the sensations in games, multimedia content and of course in design.

Design:

Without a doubt, the color quality is almost perfect, a pity that we do not yet have a colorimeter to verify it empirically, but we do have a manufacturer's calibration certificate. With a color space certified at 96% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB and 100% Adobe RGB, their fidelity will be almost perfect. We recommend setting the design image mode using the quick selection wheel for maximum quality.

Games and multimedia content:

It does not matter that this BenQ PD2720U does not have the name "gaming" in its name, because the image quality is perfect, for users who want to enjoy incredible landscapes with RPG games it will be a great acquisition, as long as we have money, of course. The HDR10 mode brings out the best in this equipment to give an extra in brightness and contrast to generate vivid colors and very realistic environments.

In its use to reproduce multimedia content we do not have much to add, except for what has been commented. There will be quality and the film is of quality and is in 4K, that simple. Of course, rescaling in 1080 p and 2K resolutions is very good, with such a pixel density we will notice a slight blur at the edges, but nothing that can be avoided.

Bleeding:

Being an IPS monitor, we must pay attention to light leaks, and the truth is that, at least in this unit we have detected absolutely no bleeding. So BenQ's good job on quality control.

Final words and conclusion about BenQ PD2720U

The final conclusions of the experience of use with this BenQ PD2720U are very good. We are facing a 27-inch monitor with an IPS panel of enormous quality and 4K resolution, we can not ask for much more, except that it implemented AMD FreeSync or G-Sync or about 144 Hz. But we are facing a monitor oriented to graphic design, so these benefits are meaningless in this area.

As for the product's own design, it is also license plate, with a matte aluminum foot and stand that gives it a Mac-worthy look and tremendously small frames. Ergonomics is very good with the full range of possibilities and built-in twist. Although the display support offers a little wobble and yes it is somewhat upgradeable.

We also recommend the best monitors on the market

Connectivity is also very good with the addition of two Thunderbolt 3 ports to connect monitors in cascade, use it as a data or video port from a laptop. The two USB ports would have been more accessible on the side of the monitor, but we didn't complain too much either.

The OSD menu is very complete and easily manageable with the joystick, we also have backup software to manage some connectivity options and display settings. And we must not forget the external quick selection wheel, something that is not very common to see. We also highlight its silent active cooling.

We finish by saying that the general feelings have been of a very high level, and difficult to improve. The price asks for it anyway, since we are facing a team of about 1, 100 euros, which, taking into account what it offers, does not seem too high, being even less than monitors from other manufacturers. For our part, we believe that it is a recommended product for design professionals.
