The launch of new projectors is not as usual as that of other electronic devices. This time BenQ presents its BenQ W1050 model. We find a lamp projector with native 1080p resolution and digital light processing (DLP) with some interesting features and a low price.

We appreciate the trust and the transfer of the product to BenQ:

Unboxing

Inside the box and well packaged so that it does not suffer blows we find:

Design

The W1050 has measurements of 332.4mm x 99mm x 214.3mm. Somewhat elevated, but within the common in this type of projectors since the lamp requires more space. The weight, in contrast, is only 2.56 Kg. The design of this BenQ has some curved lines on the top and front that stylize it.

On its front we find obviously with the lens, the sensor for the remote control and a leg with a wheel to regulate the height.

The air extraction grilles are located on the sides and the inlet and outlet connectors at the rear. These are, from left to right and top to bottom: one USB mini-B charging port, one RS-232 port, one RGB input for PC, one RCA video input, two HDMI 1.4 inputs, one Audio Jack input, an audio Jack output and the three-pin connector for the power cable. Below are two legs with wheels to adjust the height.

Finally, at the top above the lamp is an access to the projector lens. Accessing that area we can modify the objective zoom manually by moving a tab and we can also modify the focus by rotating the lens.

At the top we also find some manual buttons as an alternative to the remote control. Turn the projector on and off, change the video source, adjust the volume or keystone, the OK button to accept, the ECO blank button to blank the screen and save power and the menu buttons, back and automatic mode to show the best image quality.

Image

The projector's native resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels with a 16: 9 aspect ratio. Thus, we have a perfect projector for use in FullHD multimedia content. To this we must add a contrast of 15, 000: 1 that shows very good blacks. The reproduced image also highlights deep colors with good contrast. You can see the good work of DLP technology. It is not surprising that it is increasingly used. On the other hand, sharpness is one of the highlights of content viewing.

Lamp projectors have always had an advantage over LEDs, brightness power, or lumens. This time, the BenQ W1050 has 2, 200 lumens. Enough to be able to see almost any content with lights on. And I almost say, because if some dark scene is reproduced, sometimes it is more difficult to discern what is being seen.

In dark rooms, the screen brightness is quite high. At these times it is possible to lower its intensity by changing to Energy saving or Eco mode. This mode allows us a useful life of the lamp around 6, 000 hours, compared to 4, 500 in the normal mode. There is another mode called SmartEco that offers a lifespan of 10, 000 hours. An improvement in brightness reduction is the gain in black reproduction.

Keystone correction only works in portrait mode. This means that the most important thing is to center the projector horizontally in the place to be projected. If it is then set higher or lower, it can be adjusted with the keystone correction. Anyway, the less you use this setting, the better.

As for the screen size, we can project both from the minimum of 60 inches to the maximum of 300 inches. Specifically, this projector is short throw. To get an idea, in our test bench we had a 90-inch screen with the projector placed at 2.8 meters.

It is worth mentioning that the projector supports playback at 24 frames per second.

Sound

The 2-watt stereo speaker is one of the least-cared aspects. Even at full blast, its power is low and limited. It is more focused on occasional use. In all other situations it is almost an obligation to use a separate sound system.

To the limitation in speaker power we must add the noise of the fans. To get an idea, the noise power is similar to the maximum volume that the speaker can offer.

Connectivity

The ability to play 3D content is one of the best extra options of the projector. In the settings menu it is possible to choose between different options depending on the 3D video source to be used. Unfortunately, no glasses are included.

The included control, despite not being ergonomic or having a good design, fulfills its purpose. It has buttons for each of the functions performed by the projector and some shortcuts.

The only drawback of the W1050 is the lack of more options for multimedia playback such as a USB port from which to play files or some type of wireless technology. These are options that people use more and more every day.

It is true that, using for example a ChromeCast, that point is solved, but it is an addition that must be provided by the user. It would not have been bad, something like this would give the projector more game.

Conclusion and final words of the BenQ W1050

BenQ has developed a projector with really good features. Many people reject projectors as much for their quality as for their brightness or price. In this case we see almost three penny problems solved. The W1050 offers very good image quality and sharpness. A perfect brightness in low light and enough if used with lights, and a price around € 600. More affordable and smaller than many-inch teles.

This projector is recommended for those who want a huge screen where they can reproduce what they want. But the ones who really enjoy it are the ones who like a good home theater.
