MSI Afterburner

In order that you can follow this article better, you can download MSI Afterburner here. In the image you can see different sections that are important to know. Don't be scared by not having the same "skin", you may have another one by default.

As you can see, we have a central panel and two " speedometers " that measure the memory frequency and the core frequency, such as temperature and voltage. In the central part we find the settings for basic overclocking: we can change the limits of temperature and power, such as increasing the frequency of the memory and the core. In addition, we have the possibility to change the speed of the fans.

Continuing down, there is the configuration gear, the configuration reset, the apply button and a few functions:

  • Automatic start (I have it activated). Profiles, to save different configurations. We will have to give the floppy to save the GPU and the version of the drivers. A graph that shows the temperature of the GPU in real time.

Finally, we find the “ OC ” button in the upper left corner to test our graphics card, so that MSI Afterburner will make a personalized performance curve based on the results.

Setting

Once we get into the " gear ", we will access the configuration menu of MSI Afterburner. We have several tabs that will allow us to access different options. Starting with the " General " tab, we find various options ranging from automatic startup to compatibility options.

Here you can unlock the voltage control to make a more aggressive overclock, like unlocking the options below.

The next tab is " Fan ". Here we can modify or create our performance curve of the fans so that they spin faster as the temperature of the GPU rises. It is an option that I recommend you modify to your liking to enjoy a stable graphics card and control its temperatures. You can touch few options, but I like that there are several points to modify.

Now it is the turn of the " Monitoring " tab. In this section we can modify certain aspects when the graph shows the data in one way or another. It is possible to change colors, show more or less information, etc.

Regarding the "Information on the screen" tab, I advise you to have Rivaturner Statistics Server installed so that Windows 10 is not sending notifications all the time because the request could not be made, etc. To enjoy its functions, you have to add shortcuts. Click on the box that interests you and press a letter or a shortcut to configure it.

We get to the " Benchmark " tab, which is very simple: we only have to configure the key to start and end the recording, such as where we want the results to be saved. This is not a benchmark to use, it serves to record the FPS that we have while we play. In this way, we can observe the peaks and certain variations.

The tabs " Video Capture and Screen Capture " are intended to record our screen or capture with a couple of shortcuts. It is an option that is fine, but that we find in other programs, such as Steam, the same graphics card software, etc.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Microsoft really is loving Linux

Finally, we have the tabs " profiles " and " user interface ". As in the other tabs, we will add keyboard shortcuts to activate a certain profile. In the last tab there is the possibility to change the MSI Afterburner interface to the maximum, with transparencies, skins, etc.

Tips and conclusions

There is a tendency to modify settings (without knowledge) that can be harmful to your graphics card, such as those of Memory Clock and Core Clock, among others. To tell you that not all GPUs come prepared to be overclocked, but it is possible to do it equally.

Regarding overclocking, I always advise trial-error, but in this case I would like to tell you to investigate your model well, either in the manufacturer's forums or in specialized forums such as Guru3D, Mediavida, etc. Personally, I'm not a fan of overclocking graphics cards, but I understand that nothing has to happen, if things are done right.

In the past, I did OC to a Radeon R9 380X that I had, but I didn't get it right, consequence? In certain games, I got a green screen and the PC froze. These things usually happen.

As for the settings, tell you the same as before: install Rivaturner Statistics Server to enjoy all the functions of MSI Afterburner without problems.

Ending with the conclusions, I have always liked MSI Afterburner because it seems to me a perfect program: basic, functional, intuitive and free. If you don't like it, you can try EVGA Precision X1, which I would say is more complete, but somewhat more difficult to use.

We recommend the best graphics cards on the market
