Many users will find themselves needing to create a new partition on the hard drive to install a second operating system, or simply to have their data more organized. Creating a new partition is a very simple process thanks to the tool included in Windows. Therefore, we bring you our tutorial on how to create a new partition in Windows step by step.

How to create a new partition in Windows

The process that we are going to describe in this tutorial to create a new partition, is used for all versions of Windows from Windows XP to the current Windows 10. It is also possible that an older version of the operating system does not offer any of the options, but in general everything is the same.

Is it recommended to partition the hard disk?

The first thing we have to do is open the disk manager, for this we will look in the start menu "create and format partitions of the hard disk". It will open a tool that shows us all the hard drives and partitions that we have in our system.

Once here we can start the process, the first thing to do is change the size of one of the partitions of the hard disk to leave free space, which we will use to create the new partition. Most users will only have one partition on each hard drive, we just have to right click on it to open the options. We select the option “ Reduce volume ” to reduce the volume of the current partition.

A wizard will open asking us how much volume we want to reduce, for example put 40, 000 MB (about 40 GB) and click on "Reduce".

We let the system work for a few seconds / minutes (it depends on our PC) and it should already show us the free space on the hard disk in question, this is how it has been in our case.

We right click on the free space and select "New simple volume"

A wizard for the creation of the new partition will open, firstly it will ask us the size that we want to give the partition, it will be possible to make it as large as the space we have previously reduced, in our case 40, 000 MB. The next step will be to assign a letter to it and finally format the partition. We recommend assigning the letter that Windows gives us by default to avoid problems.

With this we will have ready our new partition on the hard disk. What we do with it is up to us, we can use it to organize our most important files or we can install another version of Windows to do a dual boot.
