In Windows we already have several lists of these cursors to be able to change them whenever we want, although the truth is that they are even uglier than the one that comes by default. In addition, these are in the operating system from Windows 98, it is seen that the designers of Microsoft are not very well paid. So we see what we can do to improve this aspect of the system.

How to select a cursor in Windows 10

Before we get them to install cursors like crazy, let's see what we have to do to change the one we currently have. In this way we will also see which are installed by default. It is possible that you have as bad taste as Microsoft's and you like some of them.

In order to customize the cursors and have the other customization options active we will have to have Windows activated.

For more information on how to activate Windows 10, go to our article on where to buy a Windows 10 license.

  • On the desktop we click with the right mouse button and select "Personalize"

  • Now we go to the “Themes” section located on the left of the window. Here we place ourselves on the option that is just below the preview image and choose “Mouse cursor”

  • This will open the window to customize cursors in Windows 10.

Located in the "Pointers" tab we can do several things. If we hover over the outline section and open the drop-down list, we will find a list of pre-installed pointer packs.

Although of course, we see that they are slightly ugly. In any case, selecting an option from this list will change the entire list of cursors, basic, waiting, busy, etc.

Change cursors independently

If what we want is to change them one by one, what we must do is select the pointer from the list and click "Browse…".

A window will open with the directory where all the Windows 10 cursors are stored. There we select the one we want.

To accept the changes we click "Apply" and to close the window we click "Accept".

Pointer options

If we go to the "Pointer Options" tab we find more customization options. For example, the speed of this, activate the trace, show the location of the pointer, and some more.

Download custom cursors

Well, the first thing we will have to do to install cursors in Windows 10, is to look for websites to download custom pointers. We will be interested, of course they are free.

One of the most recommended places to discard all kinds of custom elements for Windows is without a doubt Deviantart. On this website we can find a huge number of custom cursors for download, almost all of them for free. When we choose one that we like, we will look for the download link at the top right of the page.

Some recommended sites are the following:

Once our pack of cursors is downloaded, it is necessary to install it in the correct location, to have them accessible

Install cursors on Windows 10

When we access the file, usually compressed if it is from deviantart, we will find several folders (or only one). These represent the size of the icons that we have downloaded, there are larger or smaller ones.

Automatic installation

If we enter a folder we will find a list of cursors with the extension ".ani".

Where we should look is in an ".inf" file. If we have this file in the directory we will only have to use it so that they are installed automatically

So we are going to right click on the file and we are going to choose “Install”. In this way we can install cursors in Windows 10 automatically.

If we now go back to the cursor customization window and display the list of cursors, we will find the new installed pack there.

Manual installation

If we do not have this file in the installation directory, we will have to install cursors in Windows 10, moving these to the directory manually. Although we can also leave them where we want and access it through the browser in the personalization window.

One way to easily move the cursors to the Windows folder is to open the "Browse…" option in the cursors customization window. Next, we take the cursors folder and drag it directly to this window.

Now to customize the cursors we must do it one by one, since they will not appear in the drop-down list as a pack. In this way we will have the freedom to choose the cursor that we like for each pack that we have installed.

Of course, when we have them all as we want, we must not forget to give "Save as…" to save this configuration one a pack. So we will always have it available.
