In iOS 12, Apple has increased the tools and options so that users do not see their rest times disturbed and thus they can stay away from their devices for longer if they wish. Among these new features, there is a set of new tools integrated in the Do not disturb option. Thanks to these changes, you will be able to reduce your dependence on electronic devices, since iOS 12 offers more efficient and smarter options. But let's not fool ourselves because, in the end, the user has the last word.
How to use the new Do Not Disturb options
The Do not disturb options that you will find within the Settings application are practically the same; the new features are located in the Control Center.
- First, open the Control Center. Use the 3D Touch feature or tap and hold the Control Center icon that includes the drawing of a moon, which is the Do Not Disturb icon. This is how all the Do Not Disturb options will appear, which can be selected with just a touch.
Do not disturb is a widget that comes default within the iOS Control Center and is always available, so it is not an option that you have to enable through the customization options of the Control Center itself.
All the ways you can use Do Not Disturb in iOS 12
Within the Do Not Disturb mode in the Control Center there are multiple new settings that allow you to limit the time for this mode to deactivate once the specified time has elapsed.
- For an hourUntil this afternoon (or night or morning depending on the time, it is generally a few hours) Until I leave hereUntil this event ends (if you have an event scheduled in your calendar).
A single tap on any of these options will enable Do Not Disturb mode according to the option chosen, and will stay that way unless you tap the icon in Control Center again.
Not all of these options will be visible at all times. If you are not in a saved location or have no events scheduled, these two options will not appear. The first two, allowing you to set Do not disturb for an hour or until the afternoon, are always available.
Below these options, there is a "Schedule" button (you can see a screenshot above these lines) that will open the Settings application so that you can set a specific period of time for when you want to activate the Do not disturb function. This is also where you can activate Sleep Mode at bedtime, a feature that prevents notifications from being displayed on the iPhone or iPad screen at night.
Manage Do Not Disturb settings
The general configuration of Do not disturb is available in the Settings application, which can be accessed by going to Settings → Do not disturb or through the "Programming" section in the Control Center icon as we have already mentioned above.
Most of these settings are not new, however, it is good to remember them along with the own news about it provided by iOS 12.
In the Settings application, both on iPhone and iPad, you can enable or disable the Do not disturb option, set a specific time for the function to turn on and off (see the screenshot above, between 23:59 and 7:00), or activate the Sleep Mode, which we talked about in another post.
You can also choose whether Do Not Disturb should mute calls and notifications only while the iPhone or iPad is locked or at all times, and there are options to select whether certain people's calls should skip the Do Not Disturb setting, or repeated calls, in case it is an emergency. This section, on the iPhone, is also where you will find the options of Do not disturb while driving.
