Keeping our computer tidy, worth the redundancy, is one of the most difficult tasks, especially when we use the equipment very constantly. Windows, Mac, Linux or any other operating system that we use, the problem is the same, keep an order on where each application should go, file that we download, documents that we create, if we are not minimally applied, our PC can become chaos.

Mac has two very useful functions to organize your team

Mac OS is an operating system that has a series of functionalities that can help us organize much better the daily use of our computer. One of them is the batteries in the Dock and the other is the function of Smart Folders, two inventions that we would like to see in Windows someday.

Use a folder with direct access from the Dock

The Mac OS Dock has an item called stack, where we can add a folder to our hard drive for quick access to it. The files or applications that are in this folder will be displayed as if it were a menu (which can be customized) very comfortably.

What can this do for us? It would be advisable to create a folder so that, instead of downloading or creating files directly on the desktop, store all those items in this folder and thus completely free the desktop of 'things'.

We could create a folder called 'Desktop' in any location, for example in Documents. After you have created it, add it to the Dock stack. The grid view is the one that works best to see all the files stored in this folder. We can store there what we want, the latest documents created, applications, everything that would usually be on the desktop we will put there.

It's a pretty smart way to keep your desktop completely free and make your Mac look much better.

Use smart folders

As in Windows, macOS also has a default folder for downloading files from the Internet. This is a good way to organize downloads, in theory, because in practice it can be like a second recycle bin.

We can organize the download folder thanks to macOS Smart Folders. We can create one from the Finder, select File > New smart folder.

It would be advisable to create about three folders, one for series and movies, another for documents and personal files and the third for applications, in this way we organize the Downloads according to their type.

We can create 2 rules for the smart folder, one that is for the type of file that will be searched (Series and movies - Documents and personal files - Applications) and the other so that it only searches for files downloaded during the last 7 days.

The latter depends on how you want it to act, you can increase the number of days if you think it is not enough. In this way we ensure that the Smart Folder only shows content recently downloaded to our computer and in an organized way.

These are two simple ways to keep your computer organized with macOS. As we can see, this is a much more versatile system than Windows, which lacks something similar, unless we look for third-party applications such as RocketDock to simulate the Dock. Unfortunately nothing similar exists for Smart Folders.

Final advice

As a complement, if they need to delete unnecessary files from the system automatically, there are free applications such as MacClean that quickly eliminate junk files, such as duplicate files, temporary files, language packs that you do not use in macOS or delete applications without leaving any trace on the system. It is highly recommended and it is free.
