If we want to get the most out of wireless networks, today we will see how to configure the Wi-Fi network card in Kali Linux VirtualBox, and we will also see how to install Guest Additions since they also have their trick. In a previous article, we devoted ourselves to seeing and explaining the entire process of creating and installing Kali Linux in VirtualBox, and now it's time to go into some important details to make our machine even more functional.

Index of contents

Kali Linux is a GNU / Linux distribution based on the Debian kernel, which is specifically designed to test security in computer networks and detect intrusions, investigate them, and why not, also make them ourselves. This distribution is the evolution of the old BackTrack, developed by the same company Offensive Security.

Install VirtualBox Guest additions on Kali Linux

The purpose of this procedure is to obtain maximum compatibility with the Wi-Fi network cards of our computers so that virtualization is carried out correctly.

We are going to start in principle with the default configuration of the virtual machine network when we create it, that is, we will be with a configuration in NAT mode. This allows us maximum compatibility with any operating system so that it can successfully access the Internet.

Surely we already know that, if we go to the toolbar of the virtual machine and click on " devices ", we will have available the option of "Insert CD image of the Guest Additions". But we are NOT going to install the guest additions from there, since they are surely going to give us enough problems, here a server speaks.

Modify Kali Linux repositories

So what we are going to do to install them, is to use the Kali Linux repositories to get them directly from there. Although in principle it is not necessary, we are going to make some modifications to the system's repository file. To do this, we open a terminal and place the following command:

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

We will open the repositories file with the nano editor.

Here we will have to make sure that the two available repositories are activated, to know this they will be shown in various colors. One of them will have a pad (#) in front, we remove it to activate it. They should look like the image:

To save the changes, press the key combination " Ctrl + O " and to exit press " Ctrl + X ".

Install Guest Additions from repositories

Now we do use the following commands to install Guest Additions:

apt-get update

To update repositories

apt-get install -y virtualbox-guest-x11

To install Guest Additions on Kali.

At one point during installation. We will be shown a message advising us that there will be services in our system that must be restarted, we choose the option of " Yes " so that the system does what it sees fit.

Once the process is complete, we strongly recommend that we do a full system upgrade. For this we place the following command:

apt-get upgrade

It will take some time, but this way we will be able to have the system as updated as possible.

Set up Wi-Fi network card in Kali Linux BirtualBox virtual machine

With the previous procedure, we will have managed, on the one hand, to install the tools for a better interaction between the system and VirtualBox and also to update the system.

To make sure everything is complete, it is worth checking that all Wireless tools are installed. For this we write:

apt-get install Wireless-tools

Now we go to the toolbar of our virtual machine to select " Settings ". We will not need to turn off the machine in this procedure.

We must bear in mind that the Wi-Fi card must be active and connected to the Internet in order to connect to the Internet also in the virtual machine.

We will go to the " network " section and we will place the " Bridge adapter " option in the first section.

Then in the " name " list we will display it to select our Wi-Fi network card. If we deploy the advanced options, we will also have to modify the " promiscuous mode " option to put " allow everything ". In this way, nothing we do will be invalidated by VirtualBox's own configuration.

Finally. We will make sure that the “ cable connected ” option is active.

If by chance, we do not know what our Wi-Fi adapter is called, what we will have to do is open the start menu and click on the cogwheel to open the configuration panel.

In the main window, we will choose the " Network and Internet " option.

Then, we will go to the "Wi-Fi" section and in the right area click on " Hardware properties ".

Here we will locate all the information about our network adapter. The name will be identified in the " Description " and " manufacturer " section.

In any case, now we will go back to Kali Linux and we will be located in the upper right corner, and click on the icon of the two plugs. Then click on the option " Wired Connection 1 " to restart the adapter connection.

In this way the network adapter will take the Wi-Fi network as the physical connection and the router will directly give us the IP address.

And it would be, with this procedure we will have Guest Additions installed and the Wi-Fi network card working on Kali Linux.
