Cooler Master has lent us the new Cooler Master SK621, a 60% compact mechanical keyboard that seems to have it all: Bluetooth, Cherry MX switches, RGB lighting… Let's see how they spend them!

The Taiwanese giant bets on a practical, small, compact and low-profile keyboard. With a careful presentation and care in the details, these are its technical specifications:

Unboxing and design

The first thing is the presentation. Cooler Master brings us a keyboard presented in a matte finish box with satin color images of the keyboard model and the various functions it includes.

On its cover, in addition to the Cooler Master logo with its Make it Yours slogan and the name of the Cooler Master SK621 keyboard model, we see its outstanding specifications in metallic purple: 60% compact, without cables via Bluetooth, RGB lighting and keys Cherry MX Red low profile linear type.

Then, on the reverse side, we detail some of the aforementioned specifications with a keyboard infographic in a total of eight languages. On the sides of the box we can read the address of the Official Cooler Master Page for technical assistance and again the keyboard model.

Once we open the box, another receives us. This is made of matte black cardboard and opens like a chest. Inside we receive a black velvet bag in which the Cooler Master SK621 keyboard is stored and in turn when removing it we find the cable and some paperwork.

The total content of the box is summarized in:

  1. Cooler Master SK621 keyboard Black velvet bag for transport Switch extractor Quick start guide Manual for connection via Bluetooth (4.0) USB type A / C connector cable

The connector cable is gold plated and is fiber braided. In addition, it also has a velcro loop with which to roll it up for easy transport.

NOTE: This keyboard, although in our case we are testing it at 60%, is also available at 100% and TKL.

Continuing with unboxing, when removing the keyboard from the bag we find that it is protected on its edges with adhesive plastic.

The keys are low profile and completely flat, none of them have relief engraving. During use, we miss the possibility of a few folding temples to be able to raise it more in the rear area.

When turning the SK621 keyboard, we can see the four legs equipped with non-slip rubber and the Cooler Master logo engraved in bas-relief accompanied by the serial number and indications of different quality certificates.

Cooler Master SK621 keyboard layout

The keyboard is brushed aluminum in its upper area and a matte black case for the base. The quality of finishes is quite remarkable and aesthetically very attractive.

It has a slight inclination in its base so that it offers a certain ergonomics when it comes to typing, although mainly the keyboard remains in a fairly flat position.

In addition to its input on the rear panel for USB-C port, on the left side we can find a lock / disconnect button both wireless and physical to avoid having to extract the cable.

Cherry MX chiclet switches are the star. In them we can see a very good reading of the symbols and letters with and without light. When the keyboard is not illuminated they look grayish, while with RGB backlight the light not only illuminates the characters, but each key individually at its base.

To deal with the color combination we can consult the quick guide that is included in the box. In addition to setting the light pattern that we like the most, we can increase or decrease its intensity or percentage of red, blue or green on the Q, W, E and M buttons using the directional arrows ↑ and ↓.

Also, on the left Shift button (CAPSLK) is where we will find the LED that informs us of the status of the battery being in wireless mode or connected. It presents three behaviors:

  1. RED LED blinks once every twenty seconds: the keyboard has less than 30% charge. RED light blinks twice every ten seconds: the keyboard has less than 15% charge. BLUE LED blinks once per second: the keyboard has less than 5% charge and will enter sleep mode.

The keyboard can be charged while in use by connecting it to a device. The LED will stay red while charging and when the battery is full we can see it green.

Using the Cooler Master SK621 keyboard

On a personal level, we are not big fans of chiclet keyboards. Obviously the MX Red switches are scandalous, but the linear, low-profile feel is clearly aimed at a specific audience.

In detail, we can see the FN keys (with the hexagonal silhouette of Cooler Master) next to the recording key for Macros (on the right). Without the need for software, we have access through its use to On The Fly commands to customize RGB lighting or create Macros just like the multimedia keys.

Bluetooth is compatible with Windows versions 8 and up and Mac OS 10 and later. It is 4.0 connectivity, so its speed and range are frankly good and we do not perceive great differences in its use with or without cable since its refresh rate in response is 1ms and it runs at 1, 000Hz, which makes it valid also for gaming.

Operation of the Cooler Master Portal Software

In the web portal we can find two compatible download files for the SK621 keyboard:

  • On the one hand we find a small program to customize the light effects with preview. It serves only and exclusively for RGB lighting and is intended for users who do not want to install additional software on their device or do not need to make macros. On the other hand, we found the Cooler Master Portal V1.01 to establish in an advanced and more comfortable way everything that the SK621 keyboard has to offer:

Final words and conclusions about the Cooler Master SK621 keyboard

Our impressions in terms of size, versatility, lighting effects and software are good. We would have been more comfortable to use with a steeper rear lift. Similarly, the MX low-profile keys are fast and efficient, although the linear type keys are not what we would have preferred.

On the other hand, in the 60% niche, the Cooler Master SK621 keyboard is very comfortable not only because of its small and compact size, but also because of its removable USB-C connector and the availability of Bluetooth connection. It is a keyboard designed not only for desktop, but to transport it wherever you need it. The packaging and finishes are ten, so it is up to the consumer to decide on everything else.

We believe that it is a keyboard with unique characteristics and that it is excellent. Perhaps the price of 120 euros is its great handicap, but we can assure you that it is worth every euro we spend on it. What do you think about the Cooler Master SK621? We await your comments and impressions!

It is a nice and functional keyboard in size and transport. The bluetooth is great, although some rear hikes or being able to choose the type of switches would not hurt.
